February 12 postgame quotes: Calgary

Mason Raymond, on the loss:
We got outshot, that’s the starting point. Special teams, early on, I don’t think we were able to capitalize so that hurts, but we had the lead. I guess we had an opportunity there. Hills kept us in it most of the game and we unfortunately didn’t have enough push back. They had those couple quick ones in the third and we were playing from behind.

Raymond, on how to be successful against a physical team:
Well I think puck possession is for one, but we have to counter against that. Again, I think those guys outworked us in a lot of areas of the rink tonight. For us it’s simply, I think we know as a group it wasn’t good enough. We need to be better and they got the win and the results because they were better.

David Jones, on whether the discrepancy in shots was due to them being outplayed:
I don’t know. I don’t know if that was completely indicative of the way the game was. I think they certainly spent some time in our end, but I thought we had more shots than that.

Kris Russell, on what they have to do when the other team is playing a physical game:
We’ve got to be smart with the puck. We’ve got to put pucks in good positions. Get it out. Whether it’s off the glass, if they didn’t come that hard we’ll get some passes forwards, if it’s off the glass we’ll get in some foot races. We didn’t do that. I thought we were a step slow defensively and I think we didn’t generate too much on the forecheck either. At the same time, they’re a good team. We can learn from this. That’s the Stanley Cup champions they played like tonight. If we want to be a team that competes at the end of the year, we’ve got to get to that level. That starts Saturday.

Bob Hartley, on what led to Los Angeles’ effective offensive play:
They were the better team. It’s plain and simple. They came out on a mission and they gave us a tough night. There is no detour about it. They bottled us in our zone and we couldn’t find a way to get out. We grabbed the lead. That goal late in the second really hurt us, gave them the momentum. And usually in the third period we’re very good, but tonight we had no answers.

Hartley, on Jonas Hiller’s performance:
I just wanted to give [Ramo] some playing time with a three-goal deficit. Sometimes you just change the game, but it feels like that game could’ve been over after 40 minutes.
