January 19 postgame quotes: Calgary

Bob Hartley, on whether it was satisfying to win a physical game:
Yeah, it was like a playoff game mixed with all kinds of change of momentum. Like lots of penalties on both sides, so the game was swinging from side to side. I felt that both goalies, they came up big. Joni obviously was the busiest one, but he was rock solid in the first period. He gave us some huge saves, gave us a chance. Whenever you’re on the road and there is two periods played and the score is tied, you know you have a chance. It’s going to be down to maybe one shot and [Wideman] gave it to us in OT.

Hartley, on what has led to success against Los Angeles this season:
They’re all tight games. There is no blowout, trust me. Lots of time it comes down and we deserve credit. Our guys play hard, but they play hard also. Whenever you get involved in a tie game late in the third period, it can go either way. We’ve been very fortunate, it seems to go our way right now.

Hartley, on his view of the game-winning goal:
Because usually the shooter has the best view, I always look at the one who shoots the puck. First he got his hands up, he pointed it was a goal, then he comes to the bench and he changes his mind. He said ‘No it wasn’t in.’ I looked at his face when they said it was in. Our video coach was yelling at Martin Gelinas ‘It’s in, it’s in.’ So we got it right before the referee made the call. Wides had us totally going like both sides. At first, in his mind, it was a goal. Then he changed his mind.

Sean Monahan, on his goal:
I think it was a lucky bounce. He missed the puck and I got the poke and I had a half-breakaway there. I just tried to get it on net and lucky enough it went through his arm.

Joni Ortio, on whether this was his best performance since being called up:
Yeah, I felt comfortable. I played a couple of games, but that felt good throughout the 60, well 65 almost, I guess. I don’t think they had that many quality chances. I know I keep repeating this, but we kept them on the outside again. That just makes my job so much easier.

Dennis Wideman, on whether he knew his game-winning goal was good:
When I shot it, I thought it was in. I raised my arms and then they waved it off. From the jumbotron view they showed, it looked like it hit the crossbar. Then I didn’t think it went in.

Wideman, on what has led to their success against Los Angeles this season:
Good goaltending I think. When we’ve played them, we’ve played them tough and we’ve tried to keep them to the outside as much as possible and try to limit their scoring chances. I think the last time here we had some luck. We were down 3-0 and we got a few goals from Johnny [Gaudreau]. I think one banked in off a guy’s skate. Tonight, I just think we played a solid game, as well as they did.
