January 19 morning skate quotes: Darryl Sutter

On whether Martin Jones’ “house is haunted” given the younger players’ injuries:
I think he just took two or three days off so he could take care of Tanner.

On whether Robyn Regehr will play tonight:
Yep. [Reporter: It goes without saying, but how much does his presence mean to everybody?] His leadership is critical, and we talked about it the last week with the work ethic that he brings and the day-to-day professionalism and his leadership. [Reporter: PK, too, he’ll help a lot?] The best way to answer it? Yeah, that’s one of his roles. That’s one of the areas that he’s been able to be good at ever since he was a young player.

On whether he liked the penalty kill’s coverage despite allowing a goal on Saturday:
That’s what you’re trying to do. Teams are going to get scoring opportunities and shots, so it starts with the goaltending, first off, [that’s] your best penalty killer. It’s not just a saying or an old proverb. That’s true. The goalie, at the end of the day, ends up being your best penalty killer, and I said after our last game Jonathan was our best player, and he was. So he was also our best penalty killer, and they scored a goal when we were out of position defensively. The defenseman’s out of position. Right D should play right, unless they’re clearly able to the other side, and left D should play left side unless they’re clearly able to do it. We only have one who’s clearly able to do it, and that’s Marty, and Drew is dominant enough where if you can watch his minutes, then you can move him over a little bit. But if you look at the goal that was scored, Drew was in the penalty box and the defenseman was on the wrong side of the ice when the goal was scored. That goal is the difference in the hockey game, not the shootout. So how was our penalty killing? Not good enough.
