Martinez discusses power play, limiting goals against

On whether the power play naturally runs hot and cold:
I think you have throughout the year, just like everything, you have ups and downs.…The key is limiting those downs. Any time you get an opportunity to have three power plays in the first period, that’s a good opportunity to go up a couple goals at least. We’ve got to take advantage of those opportunities.

On what changed from the game against Toronto to last night’s game:
I touched on it last night, but I think we just have to have a better effort. Like I said, we had opportunities in the first period and going up a man and we didn’t capitalize on that. In this league, special teams are really important and we’ve been giving up far too many PK goals as of late and not scoring enough on the power play. Like I said, often times in this league and in this era, I guess, that’s what a lot of games come down to.

On allowing goals in bunches:
It’s just breakdowns, lack of attention to detail. Obviously something you can’t have. [Reporter: Possible loss of composure or anything like that?] You could put a million different excuses on it, but the bottom line is it can’t happen.

On what it would mean to the team to have Robyn Regehr return to the lineup:
I think it’ll be huge. It’d be good to get him back whenever he does come back. Obviously he’s a really strong, veteran presence back there, especially on the back end. He brings that physical play. He’s been around for a long time and he would provide some of that experience and stability back there. He’s been around a long time. He knows how to play the game and we certainly could use him right now.
