January 14 postgame quotes: New Jersey

Lou Lamoriello, on the win:
We were great 5-on-5. The second period was one of our better periods

Lamoriello, on Steve Bernier’s game:
Bernier had a big night, but I think you could go right up and down the lineup as far as the job people did. In difficult times, this is a good hockey team.

Lamoriello, on having gotten seven of a possible 10 points in recent play:
They’ve been working hard. We had three days of real good practice, and I think today was an indication of the week that we put in. The coaches did a great job, especially with the special teams to hold that power play that they have for six minutes in the first period and then we get one at the end. That’s important, it’s good for confidence, and I think that’s what it builds, it builds confidence.

Lamoriello, on three goals in just over a minute:
I didn’t even realize it was over a minute, but it’s just nice to get goals.

Lamoriello, on balanced scoring:
Yeah, we had everyone going tonight. Every line contributed, everybody just picked up where they had to; it was a team effort.

Mike Cammalleri, on contributions throughout the entire lineup:

Yeah, not every night you’re going to get five, but that’s a nice feeling, it’s good run support, everybody feels a little better once the puck starts going in.

Cammalleri, on not allowing early penalties to disrupt their rhythm:
I think the key was that we scored right away on our power play. It’s great to work hard on the penalty kill and use it as a momentum swing where we’re working hard, but to come back and score, on what I think was our first power play, it feels like you’re getting the advantage in that special teams battle.

Cammalleri, on winning battles:
I think on the goals, I think all of our goals were pretty much a result of guys working hard to either keep the puck alive on a second or third effort, or to make an extra effort to get on the right side of somebody and compete, and sometimes that’s what goal scoring is, it’s a hunger and a compete level.

Cammalleri, on the win:
It’s a nice win. The defending champs the LA Kings have everybody’s respect and deservedly so, so it’s a nice win.

Cammalleri, on scoring against his former team:
I try my best to.

Steve Bernier, on playing with Gomez and Henrique:
Yeah, I think we were able to create a little bit. It’s a different line than I’ve been used to playing on, a little different role, you don’t play the same way, so it was a lot of fun to play with those two tonight for sure.

Steve Bernier, on his role on the power play:
It’s all new, we practiced it for a bit yesterday and a little bit this morning. We can call it two lucky goals at the same time, but if you don’t try, you’re not going to score. Obviously on the second goal I was trying to go to Cammy in the back, but I think it hit Doughty’s pad or something and went in, so we’ll take it for sure.

Bernier, on bad memories in this building:
Well, yeah, sure, it’s got to be the worst thing, you know, if you talk about hockey that happened to me. Obviously it’s never going to take it back, but if I’m able to play and have a good game here and get the two points then go to another city it’s positive for sure.

Cory Schneider, on the team’s offense:
Yeah, we scored in bunches there, and you see what it does, it takes all the momentum away from them, and to get a 5-1 lead in the second, it’s pretty hard for them to come back from that. We played well, we finished it out, and we beat a good team in their building.

Schneider, on a hard week of practice paying off:
Yeah, I thought out neutral zone was tighter, we didn’t give up a whole lot off the rush, our penalty kill was really good, we had some time to work on that. So, again, I think it was much better than our previous two games in terms of execution. It’s good to have some energy, too; we had some good jump tonight and that’s always helpful.

Schneider, on his defense only allowing one shot on three first period penalty kills:
Yeah it was huge, our penalty kill and special teams in general were phenomenal, and they have to be on the road. We need to get out of this habit of taking two or three penalties in the first period. You go into buildings like Boston, Detroit, LA, and that’s going to catch up to you and it’s going to cost you, so tonight I thought we did a great job, and had enough energy afterward to go on the offense.
