November 6 postgame quotes: Darryl Sutter

On the shootout loss to New York:
I think we held a top team to one goal. You’d like to score one more.

On whether Jake Muzzin and Drew Doughty took a step forward over the last two games:
I’ve said it – it sounds repetitive – but Muzz is definitely on the upswing, and Drew’s playing a lot and playing well.

On what the difference was “down the stretch”:
I don’t think it was ‘down the stretch.’ I think we had a really good first period, and I think the last seven or eight minutes of the second period we weren’t as sharp as we had to be, and I think we regrouped going into the third, and we had a good third. I thought after we killed the double minor in the second to Brayden – and I think Robyn had a penalty there, too – to get through that, we did good to do that. We had good looks in the third, especially on the power play. We missed the net two or three times on good chances. I don’t think Gabby and Kopi generated very much tonight.

On whether the game’s momentum was halted by penalties:
I think the second period it was. You know what, as I said, I think the double minor was huge to kill. You know what, if you look at numbers for the Islanders, once you’re playing, getting more in to the schedule, you’re seeing some trends, too. They’re fifth or sixth in goal scoring, fifth or sixth in the league in power play, so I thought we did good, as I said, to keep that there. Couldn’t put the other one in for us.

On facing an opponent in the second night of a back-to-back:
You know what? The back-to-back thing, I think that’s out of the way. That’s something old time, a long time ago. I don’t think it affects teams any more. I think guys are too well trained and nutrition and all those things…I think some guys are even better back-to-back.

On whether the team is in a “valley” with one win in the last six:
Not really. We played really well tonight. We played really well the last game. Why would you look at the last six? I mean, we just finished going into Dallas and winning, we came and got a point against a really good team tonight.
