October 13 practice notes: Oilers, Muzzin, slow-mo videos

The Kings held an optional practice at Toyota Sports Center 12 hours after departing Staples Center with a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

-The Edmonton Oilers will be using the facility today, and as the Kings’ practice finished up, several Oilers made their way into the rink complex. It was nice to see Teddy Purcell catch up with several ex-teammates and staffmembers, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, clearly a subscriber to Drew Doughty in Blue Jays Hats, rocked a third place AL East lid.

-Notes of substance: 10 players took the ice. Jake Muzzin was among them, while Trevor Lewis wasn’t. Both goalies skated.

-Muzzin said that he still hasn’t been cleared to return to action. Though he did take part in several net-front drills, he did so with a very light compete level, given his attempt to return from injury.

“I probably shouldn’t have done some of them today, but you want to play, so you’ve got to do it,” he said.

Muzzin is in a “wait and see” approach at this stage, and while he is close to returning, he’s not quite there yet.

“Maybe later this week, I don’t know yet,” he answered when asked when he might be available.

It’s not exactly a secret that he’s rearing to go.

“Even in practice, too, you kind of get a little itch going,” Muzzin said. “Still, you’ve just got to wait until it heals so it doesn’t create a bigger issue later down. It’s frustrating, but it happens and you’ve got to deal with it the right way. If you don’t, like I said, it could be a while, and then it’s really frustrating. Just deal with it now, and the guys are playing great. Big win last night and look to build from that. Guys have a good feeling in the room today.”

-Of much less substance: Despite a bug or two, the iPhone 6 is fantastic. The camera is a major upgrade from any previous iPhone, and the video camera has a slow-mo function. From practice today:

-There’s more to come throughout the day. The best quotes came from Darryl Sutter (when don’t they?), when asked about his recollections of his first practices with the team. Sutter’s next win will be his 100th as the Kings’ Head Coach.
