Good morning from Rookie Camp

A very good morning to you from Toyota Sports Center, where the first day of Rookie Camp is underway.

There’s not really anything “sexy” about these early on-ice sessions. There’s a lot of instruction, followed by drills, followed by more instruction. These practices are geared more towards the continued implementation of systems and the process of growing and developing these young players. That process outweighs any continued, acute evaluation, and until there are scrimmages – should there be more structured competition – any observations are based on individual skills gleaned from practice settings, not game-type environments.

That said, interesting stories abound, and LAKI will have several notes and interviews with Rookie Camp attendees over the next several days. Nick Ebert will join us shortly, followed by several others.

The dawn of a new NHL season is before us. There will be lots more to come.

UPDATE: Nick Ebert did not skate today, so his interview will be postponed. A Kevin Gravel story will go up shortly.
