Greene signing close; Gaborik progress made

LA Kings Insider has learned that the Los Angeles Kings and defenseman Matt Greene have agreed upon a four-year contract extension. At this point, the new contract has not been signed, but the team is optimistic that it will be signed sooner rather than later. Greene’s five-year, 14.75-million dollar contract that was signed in October, 2008 is set to expire on July 1.

Greene, who turned 31 in May, followed up a 38-game, six-point (2-4=6) regular season with four assists and a plus-five rating in 20 playoff games. The alternate captain and two-time Stanley Cup winner is a veteran of 504 regular season and 79 playoff games.

Also, a quick update on the Marian Gaborik contract front – the two sides made progress over the weekend, but there is still work to be done.

Lots more to come throughout the day and the week.
