Nickson describes overtime game-winning call

“Remarkable! Incredible! Unbelievable!” Nick Nickson exclaimed after Alec Martinez’s wristshot from the left point deflected off Nick Leddy and past Corey Crawford to send the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup Final.

The goal ended the only Game 7 overtime in team history. Though Game 6 against New Jersey may have a claim to the throne, it was the ending to perhaps the most important win the franchise had ever experienced. Much like’s Nickson’s “After 45 years, the Kings can wear their crown!” call from June 11, 2012, it will endure as an artifact of the level to which the organization has risen this decade.

At Tuesday’s Media Day, Nickson described his call of the game-winning goal, the balance between embracing spontaneity and having a more firmly constructed account of such an abrupt moment, and the origins of his highly regarded Game 6 call from 2012.
