BULLET POINTS: Colorado forward Paul Stastny, whose father, Peter, carried the Slovakian flag during the Opening Ceremonies at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, scored two second period goals to key a 7-1 United States rout with his father in attendance at Shayba Ice Arena. After Tomas Tatar tied the game 24 seconds into the second period, the Americans scored six unanswered second period goals to win the game handily. Dustin Brown scored the final goal, and Jonathan Quick stopped 22 of 23 shots for his first career Olympic victory.
BROWN’S GOAL: With the United States leading 6-1 late in the second period, Patrick Kane backhanded the puck to the right wing hash marks, where John Carlson fed Brown in the middle of the slot. Brown used a quick release to fire off a wristshot off the pass, beating Peter Budaj up high, stick side.
THEIR WORDS: Dan Bylsma, as reported by Dan Rosen of NHL.com: “We talked about how we’re going to play and how we’re going to keep playing, keep going forward, and I loved how we responded not just with the next shift and not just with the goals we got there, but that 10 minutes of hockey there,” Bylsma said. “We scored some goals, got the second, third and fourth goal, but it was about how we played. We had our best shifts there in the second period playing in the offensive zone. We had some exceptional shifts by hemming them in. That’s the type of team we are and that’s the kind of team we’re going to have to be.”
