Patrick Kane, Chicago postgame quotes + video

Before taking the ice, Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane learned that his grandfather, Donald Kane, had passed away. An emotional Kane spoke with the media in Chicago’s dressing room shortly after he was named the first star in the Blackhawks’ 5-3 win.

Patrick Kane, on finding out his grandfather passed away before the game:
It’s just a tough day overall. He was one of my great friends growing up and just a really sad day. It was important to get the win, but any time you get someone taken away from you that’s so close to you it means so much – tough to hear that right before the game.

Kane, on the game:
I knew before the game that this team was going to have a good response after the last game in San Jose. That was a tough loss in a shootout, but great game overall. It was nice to come back and put up some goals and even though we let in three – we scored a lot tonight. It seemed like everyone was moving it pretty good – moving it around pretty good even on the power plays. It was a great effort from everyone for sure.

Kane, on emotion affecting his play:
I think you think about it a couple times on the bench, but overall I was just trying to focus on the game tonight and just play well for him I guess.

Kane, on his grandfather:
I mean he was a guy that I just kind of grew up with. He lived next door to me my whole childhood. We’d do things like play cards and hang out by the pool throughout the summers. He came to a lot of my hockey games, but I think more importantly for him – he was more worried about grades and being a good kid. So it was a tough day, for sure. [Reporter: What was his name?] Donald Kane.

Marian Hossa, on Patrick Kane’s game after losing his grandfather:
I didn’t know that. That’s always tough when you lose somebody close from family. He did what he can to play the best game and a big night for him.

Corey Crawford, on the game:
It was pretty good. I still think they were doing a good job getting traffic in front of the net. They’re a pretty physical team and it seems like they put a lot of pucks to the net from the point and create traffic, crash on the rebounds. It was key, our guys clearing rebounds and blocking shots. That was definitely a good test for us, but it was a big one.

Crawford, on getting the win on the road:
It’s a really big win. I think with a team like that right now – they were kind of struggling to score goals. We kind of had a feeling that they were going to throw pucks – a bunch of pucks to the net, get traffic, the sort of thing you do when things aren’t going your way and putting the puck in the net. That’s the type of game they played. We came up with some big penalty kills there in the second and obviously some great plays by our top guys tonight.

Joel Quenneville, on Patrick Kane’s reaction to losing his grandfather:
That was a special game for him tonight. I wasn’t aware of it until after the second period there and I still haven’t talked to him yet. He’s a proud guy and I think his grandfather meant a lot to him, but probably a very emotional night for him. He played an unbelievable game, had the puck and scored a couple, but did so many other things. I’m sure he’s excited for what he did for him.

Quenneville, on withstanding the Los Angeles push in the second period:
It was 2-2 there and Crow was getting a lot of action around the net. They got some three posts I believe there in the first 10 minutes there. Got some fortunate bounces, they didn’t go in – none of them went in, but they certainly had the play. It’s going late in the second period there and it turned out to be a huge goal for us and kind of gave us a little momentum and little life exiting the second period.

Quenneville, on Nick Leddy’s goal:
I’m thinking shot. Nothing wrong with a shot, whether it’s a one-timer or just getting it through, but I though he had a chance right before to give it a one-timer and then the next one he loaded it up and posted in. I think we got some fortunate posts bounces and they didn’t, tonight could’ve been a differential.
