Behold: BB&T Center

I accidentally deleted my exterior shot, so that’s a fine BB&T Center stock photo. Thank you, Flickr.

Have you ever been to the Palace of Auburn Hills, on the outskirts of Greater Detroit? In the orientation of a metropolitan area, that exurban arena is similarly situated to the BB&T Center, which is located 15 miles west of Ft. Lauderdale and 40 miles north-northwest of Miami Beach. Welcome to Sunrise, Florida.

Like the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Anaheim Ducks, the Panthers are also celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2012-13, and the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald did a nice job of commemorating the team’s history following Florida’s 6-3 win over Pittsburgh in their home opener two nights ago.

The Miami Dolphins are off today, so the Panthers are filling the void with a mid-afternoon start in a region where football rules the roost. There’s an exciting array of young talent up front for Florida, including 2013 Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau and Finnish center Aleksander Barkov, who has averaged a point per game through five outings after being selected second overall in the 2013 NHL Draft.

There is also a new scoreboard here, which always excites us media types.

The FOX Sports West broadcast starts in under 30 minutes, so make sure to switch over from the Ravens-Packers game and take in some Sunday matinee hockey from the edge of the Everglades.
