May 14 postgame quotes: San Jose

Todd McLellan, on generating opportunities in the Game 1 loss:
“I just spent a week, six days anyhow, reviewing the St. Louis series and I heard a lot of the same stuff coming out of their mouths so we didn’t accomplish enough. There’s a team that just played against them for six nights and said they had a lot of chances and the goaltender made a number of saves. We can’t be that team again. We have to find ways to score, we have to make it a lot harder on them. And did we generate some chances? Yes, but we didn’t win the game.”

McLellan, on what his team needs to do:
“All the clichés, I can stand up here and use them all. But it’s about getting it done, when the night ends you have to have the job done. You can have as many good looks as you want, you can be in all alone, you have to find ways to finish and we have players that are very capable of doing that, we have players that are capable of scoring greasy, dirty, playoff style goals.”

Joe Thornton, on the Game 1 loss:
“We played great in the first even though they scored. You get 30-plus shots – which is hard to do against this team – some way we’re going to have to find a way to beat them. You try to get some shots and some rebounds, couple of good chances. He’s a great goalie; we just have to work harder to get to him next game.”

Thornton, on what the team can improve:
“We have to get better just a little bit. We had a couple of good looks on the power play; we have to sharpen up and hopefully that will be the difference next game. We played well. They got the first goal in the first even though I thought we carried the game in the first. They are the champs. We have to come down and win some games here.”

Joe Pavelski, on the Game 1 loss:
“We had some good looks. We have to find that way to get the rebound. Obviously Quick is a great goaltender. He sees it first and he usually stops it. We didn’t score tonight. He was good. He made the saves he had to. We have to find a way to score. We had a decent look or two. It has to better; we have to produce and create more movement. We feel we can play with them. We felt we played a good game. After tonight, everyone in this room feels they are beatable. It’s not going to be easy, obviously, they are Stanley Cup Champs, a team that has learned how to win.”
