May 14 postgame quotes: Dustin Brown

On the 2-0 win over San Jose:
“I think it was a solid effort. Quickie was huge for us. Our PK was huge against the power play. There’s areas we need to clean up still. It’s one win and we’ve got to just enjoy it for an hour and then get ready to go for Game 2.

On the areas that can be improved:
“I think our power play needs to be more of a threat. We didn’t really have any good opportunities, and special teams are huge this time of year. I mean, that’s the one thing that sticks out. We’ve got to continue to be hard in our D-zone. We gave up too many chances, and Quickie had to bail us out too many times.”

On what went right with the penalty kill:
“Our pressure, our sticks – that’s been a key of our PK over the last few years. They moved the puck well, but it makes it a little more difficult for em when they have quick pressure and good sticks. Tonight, especially, I thought we disrupted their up-ice. They have a lot of different variations of their break-out with drops and double-drops. I think we did a good job of just making it difficult on their breakouts.”

On whether the physicality increased as the game progressed:
“It’s hard to tell. I thought it was pretty physical all the way through. They have more guys that are going to have the skill part of the game and try to roll off of hits. It’s just how the game goes. I think it got more physical as the game goes on. I think it always does. Every game, it gets more physical. The further you go in the playoffs, the more of a grind it becomes. It just becomes that much tighter.”

On starting the series at home and having the crowd behind the team:
“Well, it’s the first time in a long time for this organization. The first time for me, personally, and pretty much everyone here who has been here for a while. Our crowd’s always been good, I think, dating back to that first playoff series against Vancouver. I think they’ve always been good since I’ve been here. From what I gather in the early 2000’s, they were pretty incredible as well.”

On whether Game 1 was more open than games in the St. Louis series:
“I think they’re a very fast team. I think they’re just a different team than St. Louis. St. Louis was fast and big, but these guys are probably faster and make more rush chances and they hold onto pucks. It’s not the chip-and-chase game like that was St. Louis as much.”
