March 21 postgame quotes: Darryl Sutter

On running into a hot goalie:
“Didn’t cash in. Got shut out, so you could say he’s hot, but we didn’t cash in. I mean, we had lots of opportunities that we didn’t quite complete. It’s too bad, because we worked hard. No score going into the third…Kopi’s line was on the ice for two goals. Caught two odd-man rushes against. Can’t happen.”

On Dallas:
“Veteran team. Two good teams. It’s like really a one-shot, one first goal deal, right?”

On Jaromir Jagr:
“He left as a superstar, and came back as a star. Just a little hiatus in there. I don’t think age is a factor for guys like that as long as you’re healthy and well-trained and still have a great desire to play.”

On the Brown-Kopitar-Williams line:
“They didn’t play very well. They got caught on two long shifts, caught on the wrong side of pucks, caught in different situations that we don’t want to be in. They’ve struggled for two or three games that line, probably three in a row now.”

On whether this was a better performance than the “ass-kicking” he mentioned two days ago:
“I said ‘they kicked our ass’, but to define it a little better the last game, they scored two power play goals and we gave up only three or four scoring opportunities. Tonight we were a lot better and just didn’t score the first goal.”

On Saturday’s opponent, Vancouver:
“Good team like us, fighting to be a playoff team.”

I thought Dallas ran into a pretty hot goalie as well. First goal off Doughty’s skate, second one was a 3 on 1. Not much chance on that one either. Both goalies played great, just one or two bounces from being a different game.

@Batfan13, I agree with you on your assessment of the game. That being said, did you notice how once again Daryl Sutter had no problem calling out a player, or players that made mistakes but refused to acknowledge any of his own?

Does this sound familiar to you? Of course it does. Throdore “Terry” Murray was another guy who in press conferences always expected players to be accountable, and yet he (like Sutter) never second guesses himself.

@ashykins, He pretended that Penner belongs anywhere other than on the 3rd or 4th line. If Penner’s a top six then Teeenu Selanne should be given a ten year extension with the Ducks.

@shiny, Had no problem with Nolan in the lineup. The kid was solid tonite. Sutter could have substituted King instead for a game. Toffoli wasnt setting the world on fire, but he is a threat because of his abilty to finish, and from that standpoint I would not have removed him from the lineup just yet.

Yes I have a question for Darryl. Why with 3 minutes left was LA’s 4th line on the ice? Why with 2 minutes left was the 3rd line on the ice? Why with 10 minutes left and out of a TV timeout with a faceoff in Dallas’ zone was the 3rd line on the ice? I thought we paid the big bucks to the top 6 guys to win us games with the game on the line, not ride the bench. Why on Tuesday, up 2-0 to PHX, did you continue to mix up the lines?

Also, has anyone taught Brown how to catch a pass to be able to shoot quickly or not to take himself out of the play to make a big hit. Goal 2 was Brown’s fault for making a big hit and allowing a 3 on 1 and Quick’s for letting in a soft goal from a bad angle.

@goaliemom, Totally agree. That was not a soft goal by Quick. Out-numbered attack and feeds from one side of the ice to the other. He can’t be square to 3 guys all at the same time. I think people are now mistaking “soft goals” and just “goals.” That one was just a goal. Credit to the Stars but not the fault of Quick.

  5. Scott says:

@Puck73. I always like your responses.
@goaliemom. If a shooter scores on a goalie from a bad angle, like where Ray Whitney was, the bottom on the faceoff circle, it is a soft goal no matter how great the shot. A goalie is expected to make those saves 100% of the time.

    [Reply]

    LT21 Reply:

@Scott, I would agree if it wasn’t a 3 on 1. I think the percentage comes down a little from 100% when it is an out-numbered attack like that. Once again, there is a difference between a “soft goal” and just a “goal.”

@puck73, WOW! You and Scott, regulars here, are actually asking the same questions I’ve been asking here for weeks and getting chewed on for doing so. Yep, once again blaming the players and not looking at himself. Why, indeed, does Sutter continue to put the 3rd and 4th lines out there late in games when we trail. Happens every time. I was furious about seeing that again last night with two minutes left. Players tired? We had the previous day off AND, don’t tell me these guys can’t skate an extra 60-120 seconds when the game’s on the line. Dallas didn’t look tired last night and they had played and traveled the previous one. Another thing: we’re down 2 goals with 2 minutes to play. Why wait until one minute left to pull Quick and go with 6 attackers? Doesn’t make sense. If anyone was tired last night it was Sutter. But not too tired to open his mouth to blame others.

@puck73, I didn’t have a problem with the switch. Toffoli looked like a lost puppy against Phoenix.

He has the talent for this level…I personally question if he is entirely ready just yet. Nothing wrong with him sitting in the press box for a game. For a kid, it gives them a different perspective as to what is going on.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

@LAK1ngs, I thought Jordan Nolan had a great game. He was working hard, generated at least two great scoring chances, and provided solid forechecking.

I don’t know how much of a difference Toffoli would have made.

Quick played very good. Kari Lehtonen was just better last night. It happens.

I went to all three games this past week and I think they played better last night against Dallas then they did when they won against Phoenix on Tuesday.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@crowns, Keaton has proven to be a darned reliable deputy in view of our undoubtedly stricken blue line.
The very fact that you DON’T notice him on many nights means that he is filling in nicely and given his age and juniors’ scouting reports, he has plenty enough upside to justify his acquisition.
In actual fact, yet another fine piece of business by our astute general management!

    mash-ola Reply:

@crowns, I totally agree with you! We need to put a line together of Drewiske at center and Scuderi and Ellerby on the wings… At least THEY’LL score (unlike those useless hacks Kopitar, Williams and Brown).

    Now THAT’S sarcasm…

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

@mash-ola, Seriously, though (Sarcasm Button OFF), if you’re looking for Ellerby to pitch in on the scoring, you’re looking in the wrong place. Davis Drewiske, ditto. Ellerby is out there, and was acquired, with the sole purpose of playing defense. Nothing else is expected of him. If he does score a goal it’s a bonus.

The scoring onus is more on defensemen like Doughty (also with only 1 goal), Muzzin, Voynov and maybe Martinez. Scuderi, Ellerby and Drewiske are stay-at-home defensemen. You have to have a balance on the blueline…

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@crowns, More to the game than goals. Scuderi has about 10 career goals…that’s 10 over his entire career. Should he not be playing?

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@KC23, I agree, and I may be his biggest fan. He has really fought the puck the last 2 games. He went for the big hit last night, which in turn resulted in a 3 on 2, which was really a 3 on 1, all because instead of playing positional hockey, he went for the hit.

  11. Dazed N Confused says:

I am nit happy that we lost but I can honestly say it didn’t look like it was for a lack of effort. They were all over the puck and put up 40 shots, stupid goalie stopped them all. Good game but we need a win Saturday. The only thing we need to do differently is put the puck in the net, ummm let’s say six times.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

@Dazed N Confused, completely agree… No changes necessary. They just need to face a goalie who isn’t hot.

I mean, look at that 2nd period last night. It looked at times like the Kings had a 10-minute power play. THEY TOTALLY DOMINATED PLAY. I was there and the Kings must have been on the attack for at least 3-4 consecutive shifts. But all they had to show for it was 0. That’s the way you want them to play.

They just weren’t able to get it past Lehtonen, who wsa brilliant.

No need to panic. Just go out and play hard next game.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

@brian spain, The reason people are disapointed is because Sutter took Toffoli out and it messed with chwmistry that had produced 3 wins in a row. Similar to last year when TM sat Quick after 3 shutouts, it messed with the chemistry, Karma, whatever you want to call it, and The Kings lost.

Now, was Toffoli the biggest reason The Kings won 3 in a row? Of course not. but the team had better overall balance thru 4 lines with that lineup, Sutter tinkered, and they lost.

    [Reply]

    fsd1 Reply:

@puck73, and the other times he tinkered and they won? they don’t count? come on puck, you know better than that. DS is a freaking genius.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

    @puck73, Two myths revealed:

    - Tyler Toffoli is NOT God (see Pavel Rosa)
    - Jordan Nolan had a solid game last night. It was not the wrong decision to give him some playing time. He, like Dwight King, was a big part of The Run last season. Like the Quick/Bernier debate, DS plays his hunches and adjusts accordingly.
    - Nolan for Toffoli was NOT the reason the Kings lost last night. The Kopitar/Brown/Williams line was on the ice for both Stars goals because their shifts were too long and they got caught up ice. Should we bench them?

    Just saying…

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@puck73, Puck…sorry man, that’s so far from the truth. Chemistry had absolutely nothing to do with losing that game last night. Not to mention, chemistry isn’t built in 2 games.

  13. RobSD says:

Penner was soooo awful. Tiffoli is a much better fit on that line. Penner is not a top 6 on this team. I don’t know why Sutter messed with the line up at all after two wins.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

@RobSD, I disagree. Penner has been playing some of his best hockey lately. Toffoli may be a better forward than Penner in the future, but I don’t believe he is now.

I will say that I don’t understand DS’s recent tendency to toss up his lines like a salad, but I’ll give him a pass for now because, I believe, winning a Stanley Cup gives you just a little more credibility than he couch chair coaches/gme’s here on the boards.
