My weekly LAKings.com feature is up, and while you’re mourning the loss of purple from the Kings’ jerseys (more on that later), I hope you’ll take the time to read about Jeff Carter’s fitness level and how it has sustained him through a compacted schedule.

“With the [one] week training camp, you didn’t have much time. It was on you to do the little extra, whether it would be in the weight room or wherever – on the ice, or whatever it was to get up to their level. You saw some teams with good starts there that were up to that level, and I think it took us a few games to get there, but we got there, and now we look pretty good,” Carter said.

@HockeyNerd, if he was asked directly about it, I don’t see the harm. He’s outspoken and he knows he’ll have to deal with the consequences of his actions

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@shiny, And those consequences could include him or the team being distracted by a feud when our focus needs to be on winning games and making the playoffs. OK, it’s not the worst thing he could have done and probably not that big a deal but why go there at all? Even if he’s asked a question he doesn’t have to provide a straight answer. (Just ask DS about that one). Doughty still has a lot of growing up to do.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Which is why “Puck Daddy” basically trolled him by putting up video, not from last night, but from him wanting a piece of an official who called him for interference in the playoffs, in overtime, when the other guy was holding his stick. Of course, they also noted that he says “everybody whines sometimes.”

This guy does not get enough credit around here. Ever since he joined the Kings we are scoring at almost a full goal a game better. He scored the biggest goal in Kings history, the overtime winner in the Stanley Cup Finals. And he can play Center or Wing, which allows DS extra options who to play and how to structure the line combinations.

@Mars, Hmmm…that article contained the same lie I read in another article, objectively measured against the league’s determination of the situation:

    The lie:

Doan was cut down by Kings rookie defenceman Jake Muzzin on a knee-to-knee open-ice hit in the Kings’ zone late in the second period.

    The actual situation:

No penalties were called. (Which, the author puts immediately after that paragraph, apparently indicating that the officials were wrong.)

On top of all of the great things Carter has been doing since he joined our team, I think one of the most important things is just now starting. Toffoli is going to learn so much from Carter while being his teammate and linemate. Carter’s impact is going to be around after his contract is over.

    [Reply]

    [Reply]

    cup4kings Reply:

@King Cobra, Not sure it’s that simple. Quick kept the Kings in a position to make the playoffs early in the year….without him early on, Kings don’t make the playoffs. Replacing JJ with Voynov while adding Carts was seemless as well, and actually improved the Kings defense. Carts was a HUGE piece though, no doubt about it.

    [Reply]

    King Cobra Reply:

@cup4kings, Regardless of all the stuff you listed, Without Carts we don’t make the playoffs and we don’t win the cup. It is that simple.

    [Reply]

    Robbie Reply:

@cup4kings, Quick kept us in the playoff race early in the season? What have you been smoking? The team was sub .500 until. Bernier came in and reeled off 5 straight wins allowing one goal each game. Without Bernier stepping up the team would be struggling to crack that eighth spot in the conference. The center of the goal tending debate rests upon do we go with the hot hand of Bernier or keep daydreaming about Quick’s playoff performance of nine months and one major back surgery ago?

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Robbie, He was referring to last season. They would have been permanently buried in the standings if they’d lost, say, ten more games, which would have been possible. It’s one of the reasons Quick is still getting so much live right now (and the other, fairly obviously, is the postseason performance.)

I’m not gonna argue that Bernier shouldn’t be playing most of the games right now, but I do think your “last comment shows an incredible amount of deference to what he accomplished before, and quite probably, will accomplish again. I say this given the nature of his surgery. it was not typical “career ending” surgery. They removed a mass; they did not try to “fix” his back.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

I don’t know about everyone else, but that last pair of games really got me amped! I seem to have accidentally prematurely flipped, emotionally, anyway, into playoff mode!

I hope it wears off, because I haven’t gotten anything done at work this week…I somehow got obsessed, and I really need to wait for the playoffs for that to be happening.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I was just thinking this morning about how it kind of feels like playoff mode already. I was also thinking about how cool it is we don’t have to anticipate anything happening at the trade deadline.
