March 19 postgame quotes: Jake Muzzin

On getting tangled up with Shane Doan:
“It was just a collision. I didn’t really see him, and we clipped knees there. That’s all.”

On what Doan was saying to him following the play:
“I think he thought I blatantly hit him, but I’m not going to go out of my way to injure someone or try to hurt someone. It was just a collision.”

On the team’s composure:
“Yeah, it was a good win for us to hang on and continue pushing and getting even one more goal there that turned out to be the game-winner. In the tight matches like that, you’ve got to continue on your toes and going forward with the play, not sitting back and letting them attack us.”

On the power play:
“Our power play has been good lately, and our penalty kill has been awesome. Special teams is so huge in games like this. We have to clean up our five-on-five game, but our special teams tonight got us the win.”

    @DesertKing,

Was working late and had to stream FSW AZ for the first two periods. In between crying the rivers, those Bozos called out DD for not scoring and went on to ramble how our D men don’t contribute much to scoring. The most hilarious part was their deep concern about Scud and Ellerby’s scoring droughts. Guess they forgot anout our Doughty’s assists and all the good stuff from #6 and #26

@DesertKing, I think most of us that have been following the Kings closely over the last couple of years is probably getting the same feeling I’m getting about DD. He is going to come out of his scoring slump and when he does it’ll be in a big way.

@iansez, I agree… much like it did for Quick’s save percentage this season. So many people down on him, when (like you said) the law of averages dictate that no one could stay as hot as he has been over the past couple of seasons. Kings are looking like they are going to make a run at it. GO KINGS!

exciting game but we cant give up 42 shots and expect to win all the time..Bernier stole this one…Esp the first few minutes when Phoenix had some A chances…Said it before but worth repeating..Best Game ever by Bernier…

@Neil, So should he be a #1 now? People were saying he hasn’t stolen a game for us yet well tonight he did. If it weren’t for him, if it was him of last year, dear Lord I don’t think the Kings would’ve won this one or come even close.

He was SO poised in the net, even when he lost his stick.

(And no, I’m saying he should replace Quick as the #1. I’m asking if he should be *A* #1)

@Michael J., Oooh if that’s the case can we have the 2 points back from Chicago and Red Wings where we lost in the last 4.5 seconds of the game?

@Michael J., and they can play the rest of their games at home. And, they get 3 free cheap shots for every game the rest of the year

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@jet, And all penalties will go against the opposing team even if the opposing team did nothing wrong. They will make up penalties just so the Coyotes can be on PP forever and learn how to score again

@Neil, Bernier’s best game? He had a real good one against Dallas a while ago. Still, just about what Quick was doing every other night last year and into the playoffs. Still a great game for him though.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, You forgot “charging,” “abusing the officials” and “unsportsmanlike conduct.” Should’ve been automatic game misconduct because he insistently went after Muzzin. Got up off his not injured leg, dropped the gloves, CHARGED Muzzin who was fortunate enough to be protected by the idiot linesman that got in Doan’s way, was reaching around the official and was yelling. How that all adds up to a “shake it off, yo’re fine” thing for me is just… Mind boggling.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Ryan, I sure can’t. I was in disbelief. A tape of this game has to go to Toronto along with about six time codes where Shame Doan and company manipulated the officials.

    [Reply]

    Ryan Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, That’s got to be one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. So instigating is only where they actually fight? If that’s the case then that’s ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. I couldn’t believe he didn’t get anything on that. How about the 5 or 6 other late/dirty hits he threw even before that point? Pretty sure one of those hits on Voynov were worthy of a penalty.

It’s their job to protect guys and you have a rookie who is LITERALLY hiding behind you and you’re not going to suggest that the TWO guys (Vermette and Doan. Doan was reaching around the official, Vermette was coming from the side) who are going after him don’t belong in the sin bin or deserve to get ejected from the game?

    I will never understand that.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Ryan, I think they played it right, actually. You just know by the way the calls went that if they’d gone after someone, they would have really gotten the short end of the stick.

@Ryan, Ha. Like minds, see below…

  10. PP Anybody? says:

Personally, I wish Nolan played tonight. The Kings tend to get pushed around just a little when it’s just Cliffy in there. I like Penner sticking his nose in to a couple scrums, but he’s not as likely to drop the gloves as Nolan. Doesn’t matter, cause they won anyways, just hate to see the bully factor play into the game sometimes.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@PP Anybody?, Yeah as good at TT is, I said it on Sunday. They need Nolan for this game because Phoenix plays dirty. They come at you hard and fast with cheap shots, dirty hits and they don’t play by the rules. Then they complain when they get caught cheating. Nolan would’ve fought Doan, I’m sure of that

    [Reply]

    PP Anybody? Reply:

@shiny, Yeah, you knew it had to get chippy. Phoenix is on a skid, they got hosed last night, they can’t score, last year’s playoffs.. Woulda been nice just to have a little more grit in there to police the shenanigans.

    [Reply]

    mask0425x Reply:

    @shiny,

Too bad Kinger didn’t volunteer for a chat with Doan and, yes, he was on the ice then. Loved Penner’s body slam on Hanzal and how that 6-6 wuss didn’t do anything when he realized that it wasn’t a little guy that did it. That whole franchise is pretty rotten by now.

    [Reply]

    Marc Nathan Reply:

@PP Anybody?, P.S. Phoenix scratched Bissonette in this game, to add Vrbata to the lineup. Chippy as it may have been, it was the Coyotes intention to win this game on the scoreboard, not on the fight card. Nolan was useless to DS this game. They did just fine. Colin Fraser was on a milk carton by night’s end. Your best players play and beat their best players. Good on ya, Kings!

Just wondering when people who aren’t Kings fans will catch up with Shane Doan’s I am a spoiled brat on the ice act! Universally respected in the Hockey press, but he’s just a bully, and a baby, who has played so many games in Phoenix, that he gets respect. He’s just a whinny loser in my book.

    [Reply]

    Anaheim Kings Fan Reply:

@sh27696, I respect your opinion but I’m not sure I agree with it. Despite his overreaction on the Muzzin hit, I have to say Doan’s play impressed me tonight. In my opinion, the guy was fed up with his team playing poorly and decided to take matters into his own hands. Yes, he was playing it awfully close to the edge but he virtually single-handedly gave his team an opportunity to win the game. I understand why he is the team captain.

I have to admit, I kind of hoped he would end up in LA when he was a free agent but when he stuck it out with Phoenix, especially in a sports world with little to no loyalty, that impressed me, too. I mean, isn’t that what every fan wants? A player with an allegiance to the team? Who wouldn’t want a player with those qualities on your team?? It won’t be a popular opinion, especially after tonight, but I have to respect the man. And the interviews I’ve seen with him, the guy seems like a stand-up dude.

Having said that, I’d like to conclude with: the ‘ Yotes suck! ;)

@Anaheim Kings Fan, Well put….but his drama kind of gets old, kind of reminds me of my 10 year old. I pretty much only see him play against the Kings, but does he get this animated against every team he plays or is it only for his love of the Kings? Dustin Brown is the same type of player as Shane Doan (hits, scores, captain that throws his team on his back when he has to) without sensationalizing everything….where’s the same respect for Brown from the hockey world? I guess it’s because Doan is Canadian?

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @Anaheim Kings Fan,

Respectfully, I think you’ve fallen for Doan’s shtick. So have a lot of people, so you’re in good company. Doan wants it to be all about him. He likes being the big fish in the small pond. That’s why he has never left that moribund franchise.

He’s supposed to be this great leader but last night he put his team second – risking a penalty to drop his gloves and chase after Muzzin. His teammates followed his lead alright, going after Muzzin instead of focusing on winning the game. That cost them penalties and the game winning goal was scored because Hanzal left his position on the PK to chase Muzzin again.

No one questions that he is a big strong talented player. But he is not a winner. And his leadership is more about follow ME than it is about let’s get going and win this thing together boys.
