March 16 postgame quotes: Jonathan Bernier

On the importance of the win:
“It’s a big two points. We went in there [on Thursday], and I thought we battled hard and tried to come back in the game, and they came out with the victory. For us, it was very important to come here in our building and make a statement.”

On his save on Logan Couture shortly after San Jose’s goal, and on the momentum change:
“He just got open right in the slot, and I was lucky enough to be in good position, and it just hit me in the chest…After that, I thought momentum kind of switched, and obviously when they scored, they got the momentum on their side, and it felt like we were just trying to survive. We scored that third goal, and that kind of gave us the momentum back on our side.”

On his save on the penalty shot:
“I knew he was ready coming down, and I tried to give him a little bit of glove, and wanted him to shoot where I wanted, and he did. It’s a shootout. It goes either way.”

On whether that save switched momentum back to the Kings:
“Well, obviously…that third goal, we calmed down after that, and then we just kept scoring, scoring. But they had a good game, I thought after their first goal, they came at us really hard, and they had some good play in our zone, and they’re a good team. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and we did the job.”

@g smith86, DS addressed that. Home team gets the last change. On the road our young D gets exposed by the opponents top lines. At home he can see when the other teams top lines come out for a face off and have Scuds out on the ice.

@g smith86, luc20rules nailed it. This season is different because he needs to use last change to protect young defensemen playing for Greener and Mitchell.

@Mikey J., Yep, he doesnt give me heart palpitations when he has it behind the net like Quick still does.
JB was solid when he needed to be, which wasnt very often. It was far from a ‘stealing one’ kind of game (because he didnt have to do so, the team in front of him was solid) which made me wonder what game Moriarity had seen with him asking the fans ‘was that a great game by this guy or what?’ in the 3 Stars interview of JB. Myself, I was surprised he was even 2nd star since he wasnt tested much.

@bbb7, Yeah, the team had the puck most of the night and Bernie backed it up when he had to.

@bbb7, I do think it’s one of those things where his style makes it look a lot easier than Quick does even though they both are working hard. The penalty shot was a key moment that could have turned the game. Good to see him stop it despite his history. That said, the guys definitely played better in front of JB at home than Quick on the road.

@bbb7, The second wasn’t easy. Sharks had zone time, almost tied, Bernier kept them in it.

@Mikey J., He played a good game, though he really didn’t have to stand on his head because as Paul Ambruster rightly notes, they played responsible defense in front of him. If starting Bernier is what it takes to get that defense, then by all means, start Bernier.

  6. Gustavo says:

Not a bad game for a first time rookie and a great game for JB, but we should be talking about Clifford and Stoll. They both had monster games scoring (both), assisting (JS), passing, hitting, fighting (KC) and being an overall pest on any San Jose player carrying the puck.

    [Reply]

    Mikey J. Reply:

@Gustavo, Stolli had a nice game, KC held his own against caveman Murray and scored his second goal. Good to see Penner shielding that puck on the 4th goal.

  9. Puckhandler says:

I will start by saying that I love Quick. Don’t get me wrong. He won us the first Cup in our history. That being said, Bernie’s technique gives much more confidence, and leaves a lot less open than our boy Quickie. Quick makes some amazing acrobatic saves, but Bernie is more often than not in the best position to be in to make easy saves. Because of this style, when Quicker is having a bad night, there are times where wide open net is available, and pucks are going in. With Berns, I’m not saying he’s spotless, by any means, but I feel like with his solid technique, he leaves wide open nets less often. I’m not sure why I’m throwing this out there, guess I’m just anxious with Quick’s play lately, and hoping he turns it around soon. Hoping we don’t go and trade Bernie before Quick comes back to the Vezina candidate we used to know.

Anyone have any thoughts on what’s got into Quick this season?

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Puckhandler, Bad defense. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: he has never benefited from the level of defense played in front of Bernier.

@Duckbasher, You might want to watch a game or two.

    Puckhandler Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, It seems strange though that with essentially the same group of guys in front of him (minus the occasional swap one night) Bernie consistently has been getting better games from his team this year than Quick has. I could give you one or two games, but there has to be something more going on since it’s the same guys and many games we’re talking here. Bernier can’t always get good play and Quick always get bad play.

@Puckhandler, He’s a positional goaltender. He makes plays on pucks he never even sees.
