March 14 postgame quotes: Colin Fraser

On whether the hit he weathered was a “cheap hit”:
“No, not at all. I mean, you’re allowed to hit. It’s the NHL. I’ve got to kind of put an onus on myself and know he’s coming, which, obviously I didn’t. I’ll take a clean hit. If it was the other way around, I would have been trying to hit him just as hard.”

On whether he liked that Muzzin stuck up for him:
“Yeah, I think it’s good. It shows good signs of a team, being a close team. I’d do the same for him, and the same thing if it’s the other way around…I played with Burish. I know he’d have been doing the same thing for his guy. It’s one of those things, I mean it’s a big hit. He got me. I don’t know. I’ve got no excuses. He hit me pretty good.”

On how he feels:
“I feel good. Obviously, it didn’t feel good by any means, but I stayed in the game and we get a rebound on Saturday and get to play the same team. So that’s the fun of it.”

On how to limit goals against:
“We feel like we’re playing well, but we’re having too many breakdowns. If you’re going to get into run and gun, it’s going to be tough to win games. Never mind tonight – the last number of games, we’ve been giving up too many goals. So we’ve got to tighten up defensively. We’ve got enough skill that we’re going to get enough offense, but we’ve got to take care of our own – help our goalies, and take care of our own zone first.”

  8. King Alex says:

Growing pains hurt like hell but we will be a better team when we come through the other side. Lots of youngsters learning the NHL the old trial by fire method. This will make them better players in the long run. Disapointing last 2 games but we still have a lot of hockey to play. We might not repeat bug I believe we will make noise in the playoffs and our Kings will make us proud. Losing just sucks!

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@King Alex, You know what? I believe we can repeat, quite honest. These kids are young, right? They’ve still a lot to learn, gotta get Muzz to learn how to protect his own back end, right?

Ok, but seriously. You’re right, growing pains hurt like hell but at the end of the season, they’ll be bruised and battered but they will have made it through. I honestly DO believe that the Kings can repeat but lately, they’ve been having collective mental lapses as a team where the entire 5 man unit on the ice just kinda stands around looking at the opposing team going, “Well what do you wanna do with the puck?”

Once they’re back on home ice, they’ll be good again. But as Sutter said, he can protect the kids with the final lineup change.

    [Reply]

    King Alex Reply:

@shiny, I agree with the whole 5 man unit comment. Good eye. Especially in the D zone. It almost looks like slow motion when the defensive breakdowns come. You can just see it will be going in the back if the net. Good for us not a gosh darn thing in hockey is won in March. Plenty of time left. All our veterans need to adjust their play to help out our up & coming youngsters.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@King Alex, I just don’t understand how the veterans (none of whom are young or rookies) don’t get in on the back check or know where to stand to block shots or stand in front of the net to screen properly. I’m scratching my head that the forwards seem to be on the perimeter of the ice while the D is scrambling to hold off the opposing offense. Maybe I’m being too harsh but that’s how it appears to me. That’s how it’s appeared the last 3 games where we lost

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@shiny, I think it’s very unlikely. The season’s a sprint and they lost a shoe.

    shiny Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Didn’t we all think it was unlikely that the Kings could beat Vancouver in the first round last season? I know it seems more unlikely this season but I honestly really believe they have a shot. As much as anybody at least. And Greener won’t be out forever. Mitchell, possibly, but at least with 1 of our 2 best D men back, we’ll have an even great shot at repeating. I’m a fool, but I believe

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@shiny, I didn’t. I was confident out of the box last season and very confused 1/3 of the way in–figured it had to be Murray, and probably was right. If things break perfectly (hence “unlikely”) things could work out well. The season’s just too short, I think.

    shiny Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Like I said, I’m a fool. I believe that even with this very young defense, the Kings still have a shot at repeating. They’re so freaking talented and Sutter is a very good mentor (though he’s had some questionable decisions lately, goalie wise) for these young guys.

I’m still hoping and praying that the Kings can get Matt Greene back before the end of the season but I don’t know. He hasn’t skated at all yet and there’s still about 5 weeks left of the season to go. Would it be wise to throw him into the lineup at the start of the post season? I have no idea. But if they do manage to get him back, he’ll go a long way towards helping the Kings repeat.

i know its hockey code that u must retaliate on a play like that , but u could just as easily have a staged fight with the guy right after a faceoff like they do all the time …. that way u could pick your fighter ……. and not one wearing a visor …. its just stupid what muzzin did …. it single handedly lost us the game …… and deshardins or whoever made the check singlehandedly won it for the sharks by getting some dummy on the kings with a visor to retaliate ……… i know its hockey 101 that u retaliate , but i think it stupid as hell ………..

even if they dont score the 2 goals ….. we are trailing …. and it takes 4 valuable minutes off the clock that we need to help try and get the thing tied back up …….. just dont see any logic in it whatsoever ….. none

dustin brown is proving to me he is now one of the top ten best players in the national hockey league ……………… ever since the trade deadline last year …….. this guy has been absolutely amazing ………. catch and release immediately , wicked wristers , no bobbling of passes in any fashion , becoming a brillant playmaker with great vision and beautiful passes ……….. wow …. what a turnaround …. im so happy to have him now ….. what a pleasure to watch …….. and im not even talking about his hitting

this is the kind of undisiplined thinking that imploded any chance phoenix had against us last year in the playoffs …. we were disciplined all playoffs long ……. and against us phoenix completely imploded …………….

it should be a lesson to the kings to never do this again ………… but hockey code being hockey code – they will probably not learn their lesson …….. sure hope that undisciplined way of thinking dosent cost us a playoff spot …….. if we miss the playoffs by 1 or 2 points , we can look back on muzzins decision with great regret

@phil sykes, many other games we could look back on too , of course … but just saying this one in particular should be remembered along with any others one might conjuer up …. because 2 goals were scored extending the lead to 3-0 , it basically was like a forfeit . much like jersey against us in game 6 ……………. if u end up giving up multiple goals on the bad penalty …… well uve just cooked your goose and the game is over – forfeit basically

    Russ Dynda Reply:

@phil sykes, Agree with you completely. It seems that only you and I remember the Richards fight last year which turned a win into a loss and a 3-point turnaround in the standings at a time where we were still fighting to make the playoffs. (Remember, we lost five of our last eight during the regular season, so we weren’t riding this Sutter wave into the Playoffs.) “Stepping up” to me means making the other team pay on the scoreboard, not some juvenile jousting. Does anyone really believe that you “send a message” when you fight on ice? Most of the players are millionaires and aren’t going to change their hockey approach and risk their careers because they’re afraid someone will punch them out. Hell, it’s far more dangerous on ice absorbing hits, getting hit by sticks, or 100mph pucks, or razor sharp skates.Just because guys don’t fight doesn’t make them wimps. Not unless you have some twisted mentality. And with that mentality I suggest some sport more akin, like mixed martial arts and cagefighting. I remind you that one of the things that helped us be so successful in the Playoffs last year was Dustin Brown agitating but not getting drawn into fights. He drew a number of key penalties that way. It’s about time we start thinking about winning games and forget measuring the size of our genitals.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

@Russ Dynda, Jake Muzzin is a young player who still has alot to learn. He is doing some great things on the PP, and sees the ice well in the offensive zone. That being said, he still has much to learn on the D side, and you are right, he thought he was doing the right thing by sticking up for a teammate, but by leaving his helmet and visor on it cost the team BIG TIME.

Also, lost in all this, is the terrible save percentage this season by JQ. Look, I am a big JQ guy, that being said, this is a performance based business and all the players and coaches know this. With the shortened season we have, JQ better right the ship fast or he will be sitting on the bench if Bernier continues to outplay him.

Whoa, a lot of people taking shots at one another on here, the past couple games. 2 game losing streak? I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I won’t name names, but someone was bashing Stoll last night cause he missed the net, calling him a ‘chick’? Come on man, learn the game of hockey. How well does he do in the faceoffs? Is he a good penalty killer or no? What does he do every time in the shoot out? Where does the puck go? It’s usually in the top corner. That’s his style, deal with it. He shoots for the corners.

Stoll does so many things for this team that go unnoticed or don’t come on the stat sheet. If/when he gets in the passing lane to block a pass that would have gone to a wide open player, does it get noticed? By some yes, by others no.

It’s people like this guy that would mouth Stoll for missing the net, but also mouth him for hitting the goalie in the stomach with the shot.

@California Royalty, some people watch the game, they understand the rules of the game, players who score goals etc… however, they don’t get the nuances of the game regarding players contributions to a team including all the intangibles that help a team win. Stoll’s a great example of that, Kopi is another with his offensive and strong defensive game. Just because they’re not scoring doesn’t mean they’re not contributing.

You have to be very concerned with the number of goals we’re giving up recently. We’re not going to score 4 goals every night and we sure as hell can’t be giving up 5.
I thought Quick made some hige saves, especially at the end of the 1st but then gives up goals that he needs to make saves on. It’s unacceptable this late in the season. Any rust from the lockout or injury, unless he’s still hurt, should have dissipated long ago.
If we can’t count on our #1 goalie, who by the way got a Kings ransom during the off season, we’re in deep sh**.
It’s not all JQ’s fault, but he’s always been able to pickup the team when there are breakdowns and that’s not happening right now.
Our D needs to really start cleaning things up from the circle down. The defensive structure has been poor for way too long. We have young kids and they’re going to make mistakes, but our vets are also making too many stupid mistakes. Not to mention that terrbile coverage by the forwards on simple plays.
Losses are going to happen and the fact that we continue to battle back is a good thing, but we’re not going to win anything this year if our goaltending and defensive structure doesn’t do a 180 and quickly.

I’d also like to see Quick play at a higher level (not expecting that torrid playoff level) but just much more consistent. He seems like he’s battling the puck consistently. @Neil, still with all that said, and I agree that Quick is struggling, and they miss Greene and Mitchell, and Scuderi has not been his usual solid self, and Martinez has been a disappointment thus far, and having youngsters playing big minutes on “D”, they are not being blown out of games, are still very much in the thick of the playoff race, and are actually a much better team now than they were at this time last season. I’m not that worried about this team, maybe I’m missing something, but I’d be pretty confident that this team could repeat and they still have most of half the season left to improve.

    Shotongoal Reply:

@Shotongoal, yes totally agree. Next season will be Sutter’s first training camp with this team! Amazing what they have accomplished when that is considered, right?

    shiny Reply:

@Shotongoal, agreed, which is why he gets my vote for coach of the year. He’s got 1/3 of his defense out and he’s playing with a rookie, a sophomore, a scratch (DD2), a new kid and 2 vets, one of whom has never had so.much pressure.or responsibility (cursed fat fingers on this smart phone with the world’s tiniest keyboard!) I know the guy in Ottawa is probably the “coach of the year” and Quenneville (or whatever his name is) for their team’s accomplishments, but their teams were relatively healthy (except Karlsson getting butchered).

Our team started with 2 key defensemen out, then Martini went down and the Kings didn’t break, roll over and lay down and die. I don’t see why Sutter isn’t getting recognized for that incredible accomplishment. The whole goalie thing is tough because you want your #1 to play like it and you hope he can play through his inconsistencies but that’s why you have a solid backup.

@Shotongoal, ugh sorry, that came out longer than I intended and I was too lazy to edit it (my excuse is that I’m on my phone)

On the bright side of things, our offense is a lot better than last year!

2 goals on a 4 minute PP. I still think it was a mistake for MUZZ to fight. The 4th line was out there – Nolan and Cliffy were in the area.

I’ll give him 1 pass on this as he needs to know HE’s NOT a fighter and now he knows about the visor.

It was a clean hit, no need to fight.

had that not happened, this would have been a different game.

    Put JB in Sutter!

  36. Canuck75 says:

    Couple of things:

Fraser needs to ride the pine. I have yet to see that he is a full time NHL player. More like a guy you cycle into the fourth line every now and then, for some energy. He plays boneheaded and allows himself to get cranked too often. If he was a smarter hockey player those two PP goals don’t happen.

This team is lacking a leader on defense. And DD needs to step up to the challenge. He is being paid like a Norris candidate d-man and needs to play like one. I am happy with the rest of the D. They are a young group and learning. Drew wanted the big money, got it, and there are no excuses for him. As the NHL has shown year after year, the great teams have a stud of defense. We are lacking that right now.

I think that last night’s game was an accurate indicator of just how badly the Kings miss both Greener and Mitchell. I believe that neither the third or fourth goals against would have happened had those guys been in the lineup.
The third one had a shart (forget who it was) screening JQ – neither Willie or Greene would have put up with that.
As for the fourth, I would only hope that either guy would have been out there understanding the situation better than DD did. Doughty was the last guy back and did not play it safely enough to ensure the puck was cleared or protected.

Oh well, nobody said it was going to be easy.

@Michael J., There was no screen on that shot from Couture, it is clear on the later replay Fox did. the first replay is from high up on the side, but later they used a camera from right behind the net. I broke it down here, with screen shots proving it. For sure there is no screen on that one, Quick just whiffed.

@Michael J., just to add though, Martinez should have never been leaving the zone before the puck did. He was lost on that play, and in fact checked Doughty out of the play once he lost the puck. Bad play by Doughty but inexcusable mistake by Martinez, playing like an Eastern Conf dman on that play.

    [Reply]

    goldielocks Reply:

    @Michael J.,

Agreed. What Greene and Mitchell do is providing the last line of defense. They clear the rebound, wrestle out the opponent in the crease area. Although their style of defense is different (Greene = muscle, Mitchell = use of stick), they are both highly effective in that area. And that kinda work doesn’t come easily. The only experienced D-man can handle the hazardous situation in the most unharmed way. Even Doughty’s unparalleled talent cannot defend the area as effective as they are. He needs more time to develop.

    [Reply]

  39. Adam says:

On the third period goal by the Sharks right out of the gate, who’s fault was that really? I feel like Martinez shouldn’t have been ahead of the puck since, well, he is a Dman…but Doughty also didn’t give up the puck soon enough before he was attacked and stripped of the puck.

In my opinion, Doughty has been fairly decent on the D side of his game, but once it flips over to creating some offense he has really been bad on making good passes and creating any plays. I don’t see him making quicker/sharper passes and the D always are on him to turn it over. Not even just Doughty, but most guys have had a hard time creating good passes to get out of our zone and through the neutral zone. Too many times have we turned it over by just holding on to the puck and not making a quicker passing decision.

Hopefully we come back tomorrow night with a vengeance and show ‘em how we really play!

@Shotongoal, I don’t know. I just watched the re-play & Martinez was playing his man along the left boards. He was suppose to be there. DD rotated down low to the left of Bernier. Kopi was right in the slot, filling in the space that DD vacated. So AM plays his man and the puck goes low. DD intercepts the pass but his touch of the puck puts it too far in front of him. To make matters worse the puck was played in the space that AM and his man are skating to. At the same time DD touches the puck Kopi peels away from the slot and start skating foward. He doesn’t see that DD misplayed the puck bc he turned away from it. Then, well, DD goes teammate bowling & Bernier was left high & dry.
