ESPN.com’s Scott Burnside wrote an eye-opening piece that premiered earlier today revealing the off-ice battles fought by former Los Angeles King and current Nashville Predator Rich Clune. I was going to say that all Kings fans should read this story, but that would be selling it short. This is a must-read for all sports fans.
From ESPN.com:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — It’s the spring of 2010. Rich Clune is sitting on the Los Angeles Kings’ bench in the first round of the playoffs as the Kings take on the Vancouver Canucks.
The Toronto native is in the NHL. He’s on “Hockey Night in Canada.” He’s living the dream.
Except his legs are cramping up because he’s not sleeping and he’s not eating properly; he hasn’t for a long time, in fact.
Jump to ESPN.com and continue reading “Rich Clune fighting a bigger battle”
Knew Cluner had serious issues, but I didn’t realize things were that bad for him. Glad he is better and has the support of his family.

@Simarosa, When Clune went to camp in 2009 I thought he had crazy eyes. They were just unfocused and dead. Then came DL’s classic Clunatic comment. This story explains alot. I hope he stays clean and has a bright future.

@Mars, HI Mars, just now reading this story. I talked around it the other day when I mentioned McGrattan, but he and Clune hung together in Nashville, and Big Ern and Clune still talk regularly along with Tootoo. One line that sticks with me regularly “feel free, you are not alone anymore” is very fitting. Good luck to both of them, except for when their teams plays the Kings! GKG

@Mars, Wouldn’t it be nice not to just “squeak in?”
Seriously, though, consider the defensive difference, and what Sutter had to say a couple nights ago, preceding the demonstration of what he was talking about. He can protect a defenseman at home, with the last change, from a forward who’s going to eat him up, but not on the road.
For that reason, as much as any other, I’d think they should probably try to get as high a seed as possible to enjoy as many games at home as they can.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Thats the huge difference Mitchell was he could shutdown the best players on the other team. Then if Mitchell was tired you could let a fresh Scuds take a few. Then there was Greene possibly the best 3 on 5 PK Dman in the NHL, and very good on regular PKs. If we get those 2 back DS won’t be worrying about draws he will just be sending some of the best Dmen in the league out on the ice.
Go Kings Go!

@luc20rules, I’m guessing there are a great many who underestimate the impact of losing Greene, not to mention MItchell. The consistency they provide on the ice is…conspicuously absent…then, I don’t know about Mitchell, but not having Greene in the locker room must leave a real “empty” feeling for the guys who are used to him.

Reading the article, I thought it was interesting that Trotz thinks Clune can be more than a 4th-line banger. IIRC, he didn’t exactly embarrass himself when he got the chance to move up to the second line (I think) a couple times. I wish him the best, and hope it doesn’t come at the expense of the Kings too often.
Then again, I guess we’ll all “hate” him if the Kings end up in a series against the Preds. Can’t hate Clune like, say Avery, though.

@luc20rules,
I was “lucky,” as I saw mostly the “good” dad, while I was living with my parents…the worst of it was after I was gone, but even though I know not to feel guilty, that feeling still creeps in, as though maybe there was something I didn’t do that I could have.
The worst was when he died he couldn’t speak because something was wrong in that part of his brain. We handed him a note pad, but he could only scribble.
Fortunately, I was able to read my dad’s eyes from better days, and the look in his eyes the last time I saw him was “Hey, kiddo…I love you, it’s my time, and what could I really say?”
I’m so glad there was never any question about our love for each other, even though he struggled. That would have really broken my heart.
Sons and daughters: tell your parents how much you love them and appreciate what they’ve done for you! You may not get that “last chance.”

Now I’m wishing I was a better human being (I felt like an idiot trying to make small talk with him so far away but I couldn’t get really close to him because there were people in my way) and spoke to him more but alas, hindsight and yadda yadda.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Originally it was a $750 donation but when they realized that Kings fans are actually rather poor, they dropped it $400. It was a lot of fun. It was a bit chaotic and not as well organized as it could’ve been really but for a first time, it was great.
My beef was this: players were there for about 2 1/2 hours, some about 2 hrs 45 minutes. The thing is, I felt rude going around asking for autographs and a pic because the players were supposed to come to our table (but while waiting for food I did it anyways to a few of the players who were super gracious). After the main course was served, the idea was that players would go around the restaurant and stop at various tables to sign things and take pictures. Except that didn’t work out very well. Too many people got up/were up (despite Foxy, who was MC, asking numerous times for everyone to *please stay seated*) and sort of mobbing players as they walked around.
Richards, Carter (I think, can’t remember anymore), Kinger, Nolan, Muzzlezilla, Penner, Kopi and Ellerby all came by my table. That’s not even half the team lol. Apparently DD2 came by but I missed him. I was barely able to get poor Brownie (who looked like he was trying to leave the restaurant but got mobbed) as he walked past my table (I was in a room in the back so he walked by it in a sense but didn’t come near the table or even look in the room for that matter) take a reluctant picture with me and sign the shirt I had brought with me (that I won at the Blues game, yay).
OK sorry for the super long response, I can provide more details if necessary but I think you get the picture.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Due to scheduling restrictions and the end of the season fast approaching, this was done in lieu of T-A-K. My guess is, though, once they get back to their “normal” schedule next season, they’ll have it again.
I do have to add a couple things: 1) Sutter is exactly how he is in the media and on tv. What you see is certainly what you get. Some guy at my table was familiar with Calgary so he had Sutter’s ear all night (he was smiling and really enjoying the conversation which was nice. And he’s a funny guy in person, too).
2) Muzzlezilla is probably one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. He had a big ol’ smile on his face and was walking around with such ease and just enjoying himself.
3) All the guys are SO MUCH bigger than you may realize (ok well Ellerby is a giant stick and Penner is just a giant). On TV and far away in a game situation, they don’t look that huge. But in person – damn! I took a picture with Penner and being I’m only 5’2 and he’s like 6’4, I didn’t even come up to his chest. It was kinda sad actually LOL. I joked about standing on the booth and I would’ve if I wasn’t in a nice restaurant.
OK, I swear, I’m done with long winded answers. No more wind blowing from me (for tonight anyways
)

@LVKINGS88, I had a lot of fun, more than I thought I would’ve having gone by myself. Yes, it was $400 but there were some drawbacks to it that I wasn’t expecting. I got maybe 10 signatures on my t-shirt – including DE (such a nice guy, super, super nice) and Foxy. Missed Bob while I was waiting for the players to come around.
I have 2 suggestions to make it better if they do it again:
1) Allow people to choose which player they’d like to sit with. I saw so many of the guys sitting around looking bored because their table wasn’t talking to them (DD was, of course, the life of the party at his table)
2) Have an area cleared where it’s possible for people to take pictures with the players of their choice (I know difficult to do with some 25 guys on the roster plus the coaching staff and Jim, Bob, Nick and Daryl) and get stuff signed -OR- insist that people stay in their seats to make this as smooth as possible. Foxy pleading with people didn’t really do anything. They need to enforce it next time.

well guys , heres the bright spot from last night and getting zero points ……. at least its yet another non overtime game …. thats good …. keep that tiebreaker advantage working for us ….. especially in this shortened season …. the tie breaker is going to be important …. so at least it was another non overtime game for us , and thats the silver lining from last nights zero point game
mike richards is a completely invisible player 5 on 5 ……. and well over a year now since his concussion …. it certainly is frustrating … completely invisible ….. and 10 seconds after he starts his shift he is already gassed right away …. 8 more years of this ? … as he gets older and older every year ? …… thats scary to think about
to beat mike smith , who in my opinion is the best goaltender in the nhl , you have to shoot not to score …. throw pucks at his feet , even at bad angles and crash the net for rebounds – create chaos , with all forwards crashing ….. its the only consistent way to beat him …… you will not beat mike smith on shots …. he stops 99 percent of those …. hes really good ….. youve got to get him moving around …. dwight kings game 3 winner last year is a rarity against him ….. i repeat – he stops shots , especially when he can prepare and know exactly where they are coming from …..
throw it hard and low at his feet and crash the net …. thats how you beat him ………. and we didnt do enough of that last night ….. too many one and done type shots ….. and those are not going to beat mike smith ever on a consistent basis …………………. the last 2 goals of game 5 last year …. carter went with speed wide and just threw it into smiths pads … crash …. boom rebound … richards goal … and then in overtime – same exact thing carter speed wide , shot at feet , crash , chaos ensues , penner goal ….. this is the only consistent way to beat him
if your relying on a dwight king type goal against mike smith , well im sorry , he very consistently stops those …. sure anybody can get lucky and hit the exact right tiny lil hole against him once every blue moon , but it will not happen consistently , hes just too good

im just talking in general for how to beat smith since we have 2 games coming up next week against him and a very possible playoff rematch …. im trying to give the kings my scouting report for future games …. i think daryll already knows this is the case …. so hopefully in the future we can use this game plan ….. if not , i dont like our chances against phoenix in a playoff series
and no way man ….. fasth is really good … just cant say he is the absolute best because of lack of experience …. but hes up there …. same thing … need to throw things at his feet and crash the net for rebounds …. same thing

Also, selfishness (or at least lack of emotional intelligence) seems to run in the family as evidenced that his younger brother expected Rich to be the model older bro. If Matt had an ounce of selfless in him he would just hope Rich could do the best for himself. Sometimes it is the selfish people around us that prevent us from being the best we can be. And sometimes it takes being “selfish” to live up to our own potential.

@phil sykes, Hmm… They take on 2 tough opponents without Perry so they may end up with 4/8 points. With a little pressure, Blues will fold and Sharks are having trouble scoring goals. The Ducks should really thank us after we get finished wiping the floor with them. Their toughest challenges will be Stars and Hawks, but they have a world class vet on their team so maybe Selanne can match up against Jagr.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, But as Phil keeps saying, we want them to win. Yeah it’d be nice to catch (even pass) them, but that’s not a concern right now. The concern is solely winning games and staying the playoff race. With Ducks leveling opponents and taking away their 2 points, that makes it easier for us. Either way, I think the Kings are wanting to win as many of their games as possible, so that doesn’t change. Ooh….SCOREBOARD!
We had a professional athlete in our family. Contrary to popular belief that life is not a party, it takes an incredible commitment to reach your goal(s). It is almost an internal, quite arrogance for the period of time you are in the spotlight. The hyper internal drive sometimes keeps them from seeing any self improvement. There has to be a period of time each off season and a strong family to bring you back down to earth. Relationships at every level are challanging and this leads to escapes. The escapes are not always productive.
I recall speaking with Steve Howe after his second suspension for drug use. He had recently completed rehab, so I asked him if he found something outside of drugs to replace ‘the high’. He had nothing. I asked him if he was back on the stuff and every body language tell went off as he told me, of course not.

i know this is a standard answer kind of … but u could tell carter wasnt buying into any of that back to back to back talk

jet Reply:

@phil sykes, Look, watching someone play 3 in 4 with travel is not the same as playing 3 in 4. You would have no understanding of the physical and mental exhaustion, no feeling of wanting to play well so bad that you just missed a guy sneaking back door on you, no comprehension of an opponent taking a cheap shot in the wanning minutes of a tie game and you want to crack him over the head, but you can’t put your team in that position. Unless you can provide any kind of actual, real support for your statement, that playing 3 in 4 is ‘a non-factor’, then just say it seems to me that….
I am glad you enjoy watching hockey, but observing play provides you with only a slice of insight on this subject.
Have you played 3 in 4 in any contact sport?

@phil sykes, How many of the back-to-back wins were the sixth game in nine nights? This “no excuses” thing can be taken just a little bit too far–especially when the team in question just lost the 2nd of those six games. I mean, really! Sutter can be really demanding, and even he cut them a break specifically because they’re tired, and understandably so. Normally, he doesn’t, and is likely to snap at reporters for asking that sort of thing. The Kings have beaten a few tired teams, and will beat a few more. In fact, I think, in the long run, this frenzied pace benefits them, as a bigger, younger team. So, not only isn’t it an “excuse” (but a reality), it’s possibly a benefit.
I’m shocked that in all your “thousands of games” (especially thousands of back-to-back games), the teams have won back-to-back “all the time,” because that doesn’t happen. Typically they’re split. Sometimes you win both. Sometimes you lose both. Zero of those situations are quite like this one, where they’ve crammed half a season into a third the time.
Why do you suppose players made bad reads? Maybe they were a bit fatigued? Sutter, who knows more than both of us thinks so. They’re also mostly young (the defensemen, at least), and/or playing new roles. They got several big saves in the first period, too.
Your “total non-factor” is absolutely a factor. The good news is, when a team wins four of six in nine nights, and one of the losses is a road game played the day after a home game, you’re playing pretty good hockey!

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, It certainly *could* benefit the young D as they’ll recover the pep in their step a bit faster than say someone of Scuds’ age (he’s no spring chicken but he ain’t exactly vintage either – not yet anyway).
And you’re right, the travel and B2B was a factor just because their bodies literally did not have enough time to heal. It wasn’t an excuse in the Dallas game because they had a day off (I know it was their 3rd game in 4 days but it’s not allowed to be an excuse but they didn’t even practice the day before – Sutter snapped that it’s not an excuse).
Buckle up, kiddies, there’s a lot more of this hell – I mean roller coaster – coming in the next 5 weeks so sit back, hold on to your hats and hope that the Kings can come out on top.

It couldn’t possibly be that you fail to use discipline in your writing, and in the event that someone can decipher your code, it turns out that what you write is complete nonsense anyway. @phil sykes, Oh, man, I’ve been an idiot at least three times! I think I deserve a promotion.
No, actually, I’m telling you that you blame your poorly-conceived, poorly written posts on others, and it is you, yourself that you have to blame. If you used a modicum of discipline, people could understand you. Of course, you would still have to be thinking clearly, and we cannot help you with that. I responded point-by-point to your verbal abominations, whereas you, on the other hand have proceeded to lead with insults, follow up with bad takes, end with more insults, and connect the whole thing with random punctuation.
There is nothing that can be deduced from the shear literary terror of your posts except that you have no clue about what you are trying to communicate. It is therefore reasonable to believe that you think zero points is better than one. You said as much, and made it clear to us that your opaque logic is superior to ours.
If you don’t like your jumbled debris being picked apart, examined, criticized and used for entertainment, then fix it! Just stop playing victim, because you’re the one attacking.

mike smith is great .. this is how u beat him
mike richards is invisible 5 on 5
back to backers are blown way out of porportion by the media
correy perry will be sorely missed , and thats bad for us in all likelyhood
another non overtime game last night is the only positive u can take from last nights game , but it is a positive given we are winning the tiebreaker with just about every team …. so its good not to threaten that standing …. would rather get a point obviously , but since we didnt , at least we are keeping our good tiebreaker standing – and in this shortened season – it just might come into play

You tried to bully me and you got the horns. It’s all here for everyone to read–you jumped right in with the insults and the 34 years of hockey deity, and tried to shove it down our throats. You got it back in an enema. You can call us names. You can claim to be a savant.
Then you subject us to the horror of a punctuation apocalypse wrapped around nonsensical logic. It wouldn’t be necessary to bring up “grammar” (actually, that’s the last of your worries, behind punctuation, spelling, capitalization and logic) if you didn’t claim you were right and we’re all wrong, and thus, idiots. Then we have to work to decipher your heaping pile of bile, and regurgitate it for you, at which time you whine about us picking on you.
The punchline is when you call us idiots.
Pro tip: People who behave like jackasses get the horns. Stop being a jackass, calling names, and being willfully nonsensical, and people might not make fun of your sorry act. Let me make this perfectly clear:
NONE OF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR OPINIONS. IT IS ABOUT HOW YOU PROJECT YOURSELF, AND ABOUT HOW YOU TREAT OTHERS.

The record shows you calling names and belittling in response to a perfectly respectful post, to which I responded with far more respect than you deserved, and that too was followed by more insults and general insolence. It’s all here, in one thread, in chronological order, including (mostly) everyone treating (mostly) everyone diplomatically before you brought the grenades and atom bombs.
Try not to whine too much when the ban hammer comes down (and frankly, I’d be shocked if it didn’t.)

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I should have been asleep long ago but since I wasn’t and just read all the back and forth I wanted to respond.
You were far more patient than I would have been in your shoes. And in my mind you explained everything very clearly and eloquently. There are some bloggers here who will just never “get it”.
Obviously this is supposed to be a place where we can post our opinions on Hockey and the Kings and disagree. People just do not get that BY VIRTUE OF POSTING HERE YOU ARE MAKING ****WHAT**** YOU POST SUBJECT TO DISSECTION, ANALYSIS AND CRITICISM. (Not yelling at YOU specifically, you know this, but others just don’t grasp the concept). I too have gotten rather annoyed the last few nights because quite a few bloggers think there is one set of rules for them and another for everyone else. You hit the nail on the head. If they are not making sense it MUST be our fault for not reading their minds. It is really getting quite annoying.
When they respond to my posts it’s just as bad. Supposedly I can’t be taken seriously because I don’t provide facts or quote experts. If I ask them to do the same I am being too serious. Just agree to disagree they tell me. One set of rules for them, another for the rest of us. It gets worse. If they CAN quote an expert or provide a statistic than obviously that PROVES their point and we should shut up. It doesn’t matter if that fact is irrelevant to the topic, doesn’t prove anything, or is just somebody else’s opinion or simply subjective. Jim Fox or Darell Evans said it or its 8 5 goal scorers as opposed to 10 4 goal scorers. It proves their point because they want it to. Don’t post any more. The Chicago Black Hawks are doing it this way and we’re not. That proves I’m right. Stop questioning it.
You may or may not have seen it from last night but one of those bloggers was very taken aback that I wouldn’t respect his opinion that JQ “GAVE UP ****PLENTY**** OF BAD GOALS IN THE STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS”.
Was I really being expected to reply with something OTHER than “What are you smoking????”.
The truth is something you told me a year or two ago when I got out of line (yes that happens!). You have the RIGHT to post anything here you want as long as it’s within the rules (which a lot of them haven’t been but that’s another story). RESPECT however is something they will have to EARN from us.
Sorry about all the shouting. Just wanted to come on here because you said a lot of things I’ve wanted to say, and a lot more eloquently than I could have.

lets put it this way then …………. if by chance at the end of the season we end up tied with somebody in points …. after the regular season is completely over …. and we end up tied with somebody in points …. the fact that we havent played as many overtime games as the other teams or tems we are tied with will win us the tiebreaker ….. so if we finish tied for 6th …. we will finish 6th – the other team 7th …………… or if tied for 8th …….. we make the playoffs while the other team finishes 9th and misses out , eventhough we have the same number of points
but yur like but if we got 1 more point in a game we wouldnt need to worry about the tiebreaker ….. yes of course i get that …………………… im just saying if we do indeed end up tied with someone …. then our lack of overtime games will in all likelihood win us the tiebreaker
its my last attempt to try and come to an understanding duncanz ………… im sure u were kidding just to get me to write something like this ………… but since i have no life , i figured i go ahead and make another attempt anyway , i mean i have nothing else left to do anyway except sleep my life away …………………… so may as well strike out with another post

Ok @phil, time to sober up.
I like, respect and get along with ‘most’ bloggers here.
It’s not always mutual, but I’m fortunate most of the (smart) denizens realize I’m here to keep it light, positive and good spirited.
I don’t differentiate. I’m an equal opportunity offender, as the King of All Media always says, and I get plenty of it right back in my grill, too.
Then I just have to eat it for breakfast …….I’m gettin’ hungry ….

@phil sykes, I do not hate you nor like you. I DON’T KNOW YOU AND I HAVEN’T MET YOU
IN PERSON. I do not respect nor appreciate the way I have been treated on this blog BY you and others. Stop trying to make everything ABOUT YOU and you will earn my respect. I am not “out to get you” because you think Quick gave up “plenty” of bad goals. You just aren’t that important to me. But obviously Kenneth and I and other bloggers must be important TO YOU because EVERYTHING you post is all speculation about what we are thinking, not respecting your opinion, ganging up on you, etc. WE SHOULD NOT BE THAT IMPORTANT TO YOU EITHER. We’re just people with an opinion different than yours. If you really and truly believe JQ gave up several bad goals WHAT DOES IT MATTER THAT WE THINK YOU’RE CRAZY. Because it isn’t about getting someone ELSE to agree with you. It’s about believing YOURSELF. And if you did you wouldn’t care what anyone else thinks. Obviously you do. The small little problem is YOU DON’T KNOW. People have asked me far, far worse things than “what are you smoking?”. And had I WANTED this to be personal I could have used some of them. Stop trying to read people’s minds and stop thinking this is all about you. It isn’t.

Clune could be my brother or son, and I feel bad that my first reaction was that he was a jerk instead of someone who has been going through a tough time. It is a story of redemption, and strength of family, and I hope he can continue along the path.

I love you man, but I think you are slightly over-reacting. This thread has 315 comments, and a simple Control-F shows results for Duncanz as only 139. Phil Sykes comes in at a paltry, reserved, nearly un-noticeable 108.
I mean, to hijack a thread means you have to dominate the thread, and the two guys you mention only combine for 248 mentions in either posting name or referred name.
What this means is that there are bunches of comments where those guys are not even included. Sheesh, lighten up, it’s not like they try to do it, or use gimmicks such as endless ellipses to get noticed.

as afr as daryll sutter …. the mans a genius …….. but he dosent make sense many times … but hes still a genius …. i mean he said we have 7 new players this year .. when its only 2 .. and i could list a million other dumb erroneous things he has said ……. hes a hockey genius ……… but yes at times says strange things that dont make sense ……… so him saying we were tired means nothing to me ……. hes mister contrarian to the media in case u havent noticed ….. if jon rosen stuck a microphone in his face after last nights game and said “coach , quick was in goal , how did he do in your opinion” …. sutters answer would be ….. “no , bernier was in tonight” ….. nodding his head up and down ……………. he has disdain for the media and always gives silly and downright wrong answers because he dosent care about answering media questions ……….. so i give no credence to most of the things he says to the media

If you feed the monster it keeps eating. pretty easy to contain it if you don’t fool yourself into responding.
So the blame goes both ways.
Stop defending yourselves, stop taking people personally, and stop opening the can of worms.
Pretty simple if you follow those rules, nothing gets out of hand.
Limit your replies. if you disagree with someone, 10 replies isn’t going to change anyone’s mind.

I don’t know if they realize this but, their after hours activities really devalues the blog, and diludes the efforts of others who strive for meaningful, well thought out posts. Especially for those who visit the site for the first time. These kooks actually form an impression of what kings fans are like? It’s really odd and self centered behavior. It’s time for them to be more considerate. LAKI is not theirs to occupy and muck up without regard to everyone else who visits here.
