-The Kings finished their five-game homestand with a 4-1-0 record. It was the seventh 4-1-0 homestand in club history. They have two 5-0-0 homestands.
-The Kings are 9-2-0 in their last 11 games, outscoring their opponents 41-24.
-The Kings are 8-1-0 in their last nine home games and 9-2-1 overall at home.
-The Kings are 95-1-10 in their last 106 games when leading after two periods.
-Los Angeles swept the season series with Calgary, outscoring the opposition 11-4. The only other time the Kings swept the season series with the Flames was 1999-00, when they went 4-0-0.
-The Kings have played in 18 consecutive games without heading to overtime, the longest non-OT stretch since finishing 22 consecutive games in regulation time between January 27 and March 14, 2003.
-The Kings won 22 of 54 faceoffs (41%) to finish 54 of 122 (44%) in the two-game series with Calgary.
-The Kings received one power play for the third consecutive game.
-Jake Muzzin has seven points (3-4=7) and a plus-8 rating in his last six games.
-Slava Voynov has eight points (1-7=8) in his last five games.
-Drew Doughty recorded game-highs with seven hits and 26:55 of ice time.
Interesting, the Kings didn’t have as much puck possession as Calgary but still found a way to win. Of course, puck possession doesn’t mean anything if you’re still down by goals (according to Sutter anyways)

RIGHT AND WRONG…
RIGHT: Just before the swing through Canada, I said we could get on a decent roll. I thought we could go 7-2-2 ending with these last 2 against the zFlames. We went 9-2 as JR mentions above getting 2 more points than I thought. I think that’s incredible!
WRONG: I thought we would b in a “comfortable” low_ seed. Actually I think we’d b 4th seed but it sure isn’t comfortable.
This next stretch of 12 ending with 5 on road will b a great indicator of where we could finish. If the kids on defense don’t crumble we could get another 14+ taking into account the 3 back-to-back games n more road than home.
I don’t think we’ll do poorly because I am convinced that DS is the perfect coach for the situation. I give him an A/leaning A+ overall to this point considering how he’s handled the D-men injuries.
I’m usually hard on DL but I think he deserves a B+ for several reasons.

I’m speaking strictly about this year so he doesn’t get credit for winning last year. Losing Hickey for nothing is in the negative column, as was lokti IMO, esp considering he is/was playing, when nearly everyone here said he’d never play in NHL. I thought the Gagne move was a positive…the guy looked 1/2 speed from when we first got him. I don’t c much to like in Ellerby….but the biggie is obviously Muzzin. We didn’t make the playoffs yet….what…u give him an A? For what?

@linny, You can’t give him a meaningful grade yet anyway because it’s halfway through the season.
A lot of people were giving him miserably failing grades just a little over a year ago when he replaced TM with a supposed facsimile – and look how that turned out.
When you have too much talent/salary you have to shed, it’s the nature of sports.
The right players have been retained as is currently in evidence (though I won’t be giving the team a premature grade, lol) so this means the right players are still here and by extension that the GM is unassailable in his decision making WRT team personnel.

If I would have told you during the lockout that Greene and Mitchell would get hurt the first week and we would be without them for the season and that we WOULDN’T CARE, there’s no way you would have believed me.
This is the kind of annoying depth that the old Colorado and Detroit teams used to have. Big names get injured and the rookies come in and play better than the veterans.

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but the 2 points sure are pretty to look at!
Calgary came with a really hard push all throughout the 3rd period. Quick was huge and the D for the most part kept them to the outside and took away shooting lanes. Outstanding PK as usual.
I haven’t looked at TOI but I can’t imagine Martinez and Ellerbee getting more than low teen minutes. Until Marty got undressed on the goal, they were pretty much invisible. I’m stll not sure what if anything we’ll ever get out of Ellerbee, but we all saw Martinez last year and right now he looks lost on the ice. He’s had no offensive game to speak of and Sutter said it best..you can’t get beat one on one in the NHL. There’s absolutely no excuse for it.
The Kopi line was flying all night. I’m not sure Penner will ever get better opportunities to score than he had last night. He must have woken up numerous times from his sleep thinking about those chances. the fact that he had the puck on his stick with those opportunities means he did everything right except finish.
Stolly was the best player on either team. When he plays the way he did, he’s the best 3rd line Center in the league.
One player I wasn’t very impressed with was King. I thought he looked like he was chasing the puck all night long. He lost just about every 50/50 battle in the corners. I like King a lot but I could see DS inserting Richardson into the lineup in place of King to give him a better look from the press box.
there’s no sense talking about Voynov/Doughty/Mzzin/Scuderi..its a broken record but they’re playing at an unbelievably high level right now. Good luck finding a better 4some in the league.
Last but not least Quick looks like he’s getting that mojo back. He was very strong last night and was out at the top of his crease challenging shooters. That hasn’t been the case most of the season.
If we can get another 2 points tonight…that gives us 6 points since Saturday.
what kind of start did we have this year? lol

I’m sorry, I don’t really understand how this wasn’t a “pretty” win. Is it because the defense got caught napping and allowed Backlund to come in and score on Quick late in the 3rd? I mean I give the credit mostly to Calgary for not backing down (and of course our defense for getting beaten one on one). Other than that, what wasn’t pretty about it? First goal a deflection, second goal a sick snipe shot that any goalie would be hard pressed to stop.

As the always (?) succinct @Neiling was quoted as saying in his post-game interview, it was a ‘workmanlike’ effort by the Kings. Few frills to speak of and a very routine two points in the bag.
Most games this season will require more dynamism than this game did, largely due to who the opposition and how effective their performance was.

@KC23,
Sorry, I disagree. Rich’s agreement with the Kings was to write what he wanted, positive or negative, with no censorship by Kings administration. The Kings and Rich both honored their agreement and Rich wrote the article and the Kings allowed him to run it. When you have a egotistical piece of crap dictator with power issues running the league, then you end up with someone who should be trying to solve the lockout problem instead of spending time trying to shut diwn blog reporters who create more internet site hits (and advertising dollars) for NHL.com than anyone else. Plenty of other outlets carried the exact same story, and while they were not controlled by the NHL, the information was out there for all to consume. It culd have simply been handled with the Kings issuing a statement on the blog saying that they did not agree or condone Westy’s statement but respect his right to have it. Instead, Buttman played power whore, flexed his little muscles, and screwed over a really nice representative of hockey, a dedicated fan base in LA, and a class organization in AEG. Long live the Evil Load and send him to OZ where he would fit right in.

@KC23, I respectfully disagree, DesertKing. There are rules in labor disputes about representatives being unallowed to talk to each other (just as in a lawsuit, the lawyers are not allowed to call the other lawyer’s client directly).
As a team employee, Rich was not allowed to talk to a player representative. Period. It’s not for censorship reasons, but because of labor law.
He was a bit naive on that one (will always love what he did for the Kings, though).

When you land a job like that, there’s really no looking back.
As “unassuming” as I’d agree Rich is, it is the aspiration of any and all journalists to be ever more widely read and recognized.
Rich was the proverbial cat’s whiskers for Kings hockey reporting but naturally you when you join a newspaper of that standing you become a kitty again for a while, or a ‘cub’ of sorts again.
I for one think Rich would not have a single regret about what he has achieved and where he’s at today, and I’m certainly not about to compare his career and style of running the Insider to that of @Jon just as I tire of seeing snarky comparisons between Kings players occupying similar roles or positions.

The fact that the OC Register has to cover USC, a team from LA county with no link to OC, indicates its level of power. Like all papers, it is losing subscribers faster than the Titanic lost deck chairs. Not even Rich can save them. As soon as the Cubs enter the 20th century, hopefully they get smart and hire Rich to run their blog, which would be his dream job.

@DesertKing, I’m absolutely not disagreeing with you that this is a stepping stone for Rich, but given that the newspaper industry is dying, corporate journalism as an institution is therefore retrenching, so by adding this estimable position to the resume at the same time as getting to write about something even closer to his heart, he is pedaling along at a very satisfactory clip indeed.
I think it is enviable how well Rich has done, and certainly not deserving of being demeaned.

As for the point about reporting on USC for the OC Register, the LA Times online has sections devoted to both the Angels and the Ducks. This is simply a joint market.
Think about it, there are likely a lot more USC alum living in Orange County than LA County anyway!

OT: Kings to be honored along with Galaxy at the White House the 26th. I know it’s a huge honor but.couldn’t someone say, Look Mr. President, we are flattered and honored but can we do a double header after Kings win the Cup a second time?
This comes at the beginning of a Central Division 5 game road swing

@shiny,
Yep, some huge honor. The President couldn’t find time to honor them individually like the other sports teams. Its a photo op, nothing else. Move along. All we care about is repeating as Cup champions.

@Duncanz, it’s an enormous honor but on any given day, the president knows his workload. I’m just wondering if it couldn’t have been possible to schedule this at a better time. Say, in January or February not right in the middle of.the season. But I don’t know the circumstances surrounding the scheduling of this photo op

@Duncanz,
When he mispronounces everyone’s name and screws up the facts of how they won the Cup, then you will see just how much importance it had and how much effort was put into it. Sorry, its just a political photo op. And I don’t care who the president, they are all like that, unless the president in office is someone who actually played or was part of a specific sport (and even then it is still just a photo op).
Duncanz Reply:

@DesertKing,It goes without saying that it’s a photo op for the Prez, as are all photographs taken in the Whitehouse, nevertheless it’s a massive honor for any sports figure or team to be recognized by the Commander In Chief – unless you’re an itinerant lunatic who’s a half pace ahead of Rick Dipietro in his career path … or not.

I wouldn’t say it’s much of an “honor” really, anyway, and I agree with DesertKing that it doesn’t matter who the President is, when I say that.

@shiny, These are Presidential photo opportunities, and frankly, getting really old. They shouldn’t happen at all, no matter WHO is President, WHO wins the cup, or WHO cares.

BTW, the Kings didn’t just take any day they were invited–they scheduled it with the White House. I found this out when I looked into the topic. You can see what I think about the topic already.

A tap of the stick, as @J-Ro woud say, to Brett Lewis who, for the first time I’ve ever heard on a news station during the regular season, included a player comment (didn’t catch who – Carter?) in his KFWB sports report that was led by the Kings win last night.
Slowly but surely and granny step by granny step, the city is turning and Kings hockey is ascending.

@Duncanz, I was listening to heidi and frank on the way to work the other night, and they NEVER talk hockey.
but it was during our hot streak (before dallas loss) and they were like
“We got some Big news coming out of the National Hockey League. The Chicago Blackhawks are undeafted through 20 games….. Its great huh?…OK now on to football”
and they spent 5 minutes on football. F’ing bastards.
Kevin and Bean at least acknowledge they are hockey fans and every once in a while comment on the games while having a player and/or Luc on their show.

@Lake Forest, I hate the Heidi and Frank show. When it was the Mark and Brian Show, they’d spend.a good 20 minutes *daily* talking about football. But that’s their audience, I guess…
And Luc is such a good sport whenever he’s on the K&B show. Kevin tries to give him a hard time (all in jest of course), but Luc just rolls with it. Early in the season, Kevin made a crack about Ralph’s precious Flyers and Ralph asks “And how are Kings doing down in the basement?” Kevin retorts with, “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Washington.” And that is why I listen to.this.show, for gems like that

Jim Rome did all he could for the Kings in LA when I was there. Haven’t listened to his show pretty much since leaving LA (yeah, they sound related, but I guess they’re not) so I don’t know if he still does.
I mean, Gretz was “The Correspondent.”

@Lake Forest, I actually think the tide is turning for the LA sports fans. I get a lot of comments about how they are doing than ever before at work. We have a TV in our break room and I would always have to play ping pong on basketball Vs my hockey, not so much anymore.

Pretty crazy how tight the standings are. One bad week and a team could drop from 4th or 5th to 11th or 12th. Not much room for error in this short season. Just ask Calgary and Edmonton. The “Battle of Alberta” for last place in the league…haha.

Good Morning everybody! Kings looks awesome in the first period, seems as if they let off the gas until the Flames scored. Penner looks whipped out there. Wide open shots don’t come around every day. Still pulling for him! Muzzin is the bomb. Dude is playing great. Still waiting for Drews first. Love watching #8 play. Still he needs to find the back of the net soon. I really think we are soild on “D” except for that Ellaby guy. Dude stinks. Play DD#2 instead. Can’t wait to see Tofolli on the ice. Looked for him last night, but maybe tonight. gonna go got a call

@King Charles of Salt Lake, Disagree about Ellerby, especially after the game last night. He was blocking shots, making good decisions with the puck and taking the body. DD2 seems better in stretches, which is why he’s a pine rider

Hey Charles,
I think you are being way to harsh on “Ellerby”. The guy just came from a different team/conference just a few weeks ago and is not going to instantly become Willie Mitchell. I think he has shown steady improvement as he gets more comfortable with our system and his new teammates. Show the guy some support. He is a talented big kid with a ton of potential.

@King Cobra, DL said they chose him because he’s a big kid with a lot of grit. He’s not perfect every game but no one is. Anyway, there’s great improvement from the whole team lately. They have a bad game then they get right back into it. I think since they went on their 6 game winning streak, they haven’t lost more than one game in a row

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, We have a lot of young D-men. The return of Mitchell and Greene or just maturing players on D will improve this season’s figures. Those losses you speak of were very early in the season.
