10-12 games ago the Kings changed their style of play in the offensive zone. All-of-a-sudden they were making a lot of short passes. Moving. Looking for the pass, again in the offensive zone. I’m a laymen, but, it was a noticeable change in style. Initially, they weren’t getting much out of it, but, the past 8-9 games of course their scoring is just kick ass! I DO like what I’m seeing in this team.

Ellerby making the Lames work way too in their own zone.
Great work.
Penner has come close. I want to see the streak stay alive!!!
[Reply]
*too hard
[Reply]
I was about to say why is ellerby in thinking that greene was back. looking ahead with the trade deadline on the 3rd i think the kings will trade him for a pick. not that he is bad, but muzzin took that spot. also drewiske doesn’t have that much trade value. and marty will be the next to sit after, or if mitchell comes back. the large man is playing great. all the fans that dislike him i always ask this one question. who is better king or penner? thank you and gkg

AMart is going to have to pick it up to keep his spot if/when they both come back. Muzzin has been dynamic in the O zone and more physical in our zone and not noticeably worse than AMart in coverage

Martinez made one bad play, but I thought he was fairly solid tonight. He (and the rest of the defensemen) did a great job of clearing loose pucks in front of the net, which is something that’s been lacking for a lot of the season.
I was hoping Quick would get the shutout, but the one goal is forgivable in a win. Solid work in their own end tonight, and the best goaltending we’ve seen from Quick this year.

We’re in decent position to handle whatever comes at us, or decent as it gets. I’m liking where we are right now. Hanging back, conserving energy but still smart enough in play to get the wins required.
Hopefully we can see Toffoli get squeezed in the lineup for one or two down the stretch.

You skaters, gotta question about Penner’s skating.
He looks like a guy who
-IS NOT a natural skater
-IS NOT comfortable getting hit
-Has little ability to react and keep moving(balance issues)
Again, you good skaters, help a laymen. What’s your opinion?
p.s. I’m not bashing Penner. I’ve always liked him. IMHO he has real good hands and a nose for the net. It’s his skating and movement that is almost unlike any other player I’ve seen in years. What is that??

More weight = tougher to balance. Go to any power skating clinic and if a bantam crashes into a mite its always the bantam who goes flying.

Kenny44 Reply:

@JoeKing,
Keeping a lower center of gravity = more balance = more powerful stride & speed. Russians train like crazy on this. Zhitnik, Fedorov, and now Voynov are good examples to watch.
You have heard about Penner’s first three steps being the key for him. If he’s more upright on those first three, he gets no push and is slow and wobbly. When he lowers those hips, though, and really strides he can get up to full speed quickly and cover a lot of ice. Of course, staying low over your skates takes much more energy, which is a reason why it can be hit and miss with Penner.
[Reply]
What is the deal with Dustin Brown? You use to count on him to hit a few guys now and again but recently he has been invisible. Tonight Doughty led the team in hits with 7, Voynov had 5 and Brown had none.

@tomb, i thought the empty netter was the better of his goals. he won a battle and found the seam to gat that one to the net. the PP goal was just a great pass by VV which brown almost wiffed on. He was invisible most of the game and not playing physical.

@Shakes, good point…Look at Penner…he is effectively taking the body…seperating the puck from the man and taking it away…that is better than the big hit which often leaves one out of position and on the wrong side of the puck

IMO, since he’s playing alongside one of the greatest (Kopitar) he needs to focus more on improving his offensive game than his hitting. It’s a bonus that Brown’s reputation puts fear in other guys. Vancouver playoffs…

Good play from Stoll tonight on both ends of the ice. Plus the game winner backed up by Quick.

Kings got caught on cruise control in the 3rd. No real pushes were made towards the opposing goalie, which is fine since they have a back to back tomorrow but it was still concerning.
And how freaking lucky are the Kings that Flames couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn tonight?!?! Jeez, Flames’ offense was bad lol. But, gotta credit some of that to really good back checking by all 5 guys on the ice. Ok, I need to drive now so back in a half hour. Please no one bash me too terribly while I’m gone!

@Mikey J., No I agree. I just watched the replay on NHLN (we actually almost 2 full minutes of air time!)… There were 3 guys standing around watching the one Flame scoot around AMart and beat Quick down low. Hence, Kings got caught on cruise control. I noticed it at the game. About halfway in the second they decided to stop driving the net and just kind of put the brakes on. Third period was worse! Kings looked a bit disinterested. I think the Kings were shocked that they had such a strong lead against the Flames
