Toffoli up?

Top Los Angeles prospect Tyler Toffoli, who ranks second in the American Hockey League with 28 goals, may be on his way up to Los Angeles, per several Twitter reports.

The Kings have a roster spot open and would not have to clear room for Toffoli’s arrival. While the team suffered a scare during a heavy hit on Mike Richards in the second period last night, a Toffoli call-up could also simply be a reflection of the 20-year old’s recent play in Manchester and the natural progression associated with the former second-round pick.

UPDATE, 2:00 PM: The team’s official announcement should be coming shortly.

LA Kings Insider will have more updates on this story, should it continue to develop.

@Neil, I agree, there is no other reason for him to be here, it’s not DL’s style so someone is injured…..did one of our forwards stay off the ice for an extended period last night?

    Adam Reply:

@Ravens, it has to be Richards, don’t you think? I didn’t notice anybody else leave the bench/game.

    Ryanoliver Reply:

@Ravens, could also be Williams. He was really limping to the bench after taking that shot, and then when he took his skate off after the game, his foot could have swelled up. My guess is Richards though.

    Kings20 Reply:

@Ravens, There is million reasons for him to be here. He should of been here sooner and play on Richards line or even replace struggling Williams.

    goldielocks Reply:

    @Neil,

While Richards condition is uncertain at this point, it’s now less than 1 month to the trade deadline so if DL to make some changes to the lineup, this is the best time to do it before he makes a big decision.

@Ravens, This scenario IS entirely possible:

    1. DL is very happy with the way Toffoli is developing and thinks he may be ready NOW.

    2. DL calls Toffoli up.

    3. Toffoli is going to PLAY, not sit.

@CB14, I don’t think he would come up to play center for Richards anyways. I think they would slide Carter back into center, bump Lewis up to the second line, and slide Toffoli in with Stoll and King. Just my thoughts if it is actually Richards that is hurt (which I really hope not).

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@goldielocks, CORRECT. If someone is called up, they have, BY DEFINITION just gone from “judged not to be ready” to “judged to be ready”. Yes, we both probably have better things to do than make half a blog consist of our arguing back and forth. My problem was your seeming attitude of “I called this one” when in fact YOU HAVE BEEN TELLING US THE OPPOSITE. Anyway, I’m sure we both want what’s best for the team, as does DL. Lets wait and see WHY this was done if in fact it even was. We don’t know yet.

Agreed. I think you have a strong point and opinion on the matter, and I respect that. It’s just I think people saying which player should be traded or replaced with other guys are not their business unless they have equal knowledge as GMs have. So I’ve never said anything about it even though I had something in my mind. It’s just my way, and I hop you respect that, too.

    Ryanoliver Reply:

@Lake Forest, not sure why everyone thinks Stoll will sit. He plays the kind of game Sutter loves. He may take too many penalties but the style he plays will get him in penalty trouble. The one he took last night was just him playing 25 plus years of hockey doing something and then in the heat of the battle forgot. Sutter loves the Lewis Stoll combo and won’t sit him

@Belexes, I also hope no King(s) were injured last night, but even if it is a move to fill the roster. Young extremely talented players do not sit. They don’t get better sitting, and that is why they stay down in the AHL longer than just being better then the 12 forward, 6th Dman, or 2nd Goalie. They want to have the player get max minutes to improve his game. If Toffoli comes up and no one is injured then someone else sits.

  21. KingMe20 says:

Hard to make a case for anyone sitting right now in the forward lines, barring an injury to either Williams or Richards (I wondered too about Williams’s leg after he got hit with that shot). Sometims, though, the player makes the decision for the club. I was listening to an interview with Stan Kasten of the Dodgers talking about when he had Andruw Jones as a rookie in Atlanta, and he said, “Sometimes the player just makes it impossible to justify keeping him down in the minors.”

However, I don’t think it is necessarily true that “Tyler Toffoli isn’t coming up here to sit.” It might be that Dean Lombardi and Darryl Sutter want to get him into some practices with the guys to see who he fits best with before they start making decisions about the future. It makes sense to get a look at him with the top centers on the team to see with whom he fits best, and so if they need to make a deal before the trade deadline (for say, a defenseman), they know who he can replace. I liken it to the situation with Jack Johnson last year. That deal was made much easier for the Kings to make not only because of who they would get, but because of the ability of Slava Voynov to step into Johnson’s spot in the roster.

My feeling is that it’s probably likely that Dustin Penner will leave in the summer (although I like the way he’s played the past two weeks), and Toffoli will find his way onto one of the top two lines. His plus/minus is encouraging, so he may even start out on the third line and learn some defensive responsibilities as well. Overall, the good news is that there is absolutely no rush to bring him along before he’s ready.

I think Nolan is more valuable because he brings the fighting element( his fight turned around that Anaheim game I believe it was) ive seen Nolan make some nice plays at the begging of the season and the 4th line brings so much energy. King is Really strong on the boards as we saw with that assist to Kopitar in Detroit game….plus he was really good in the playoffs….close one the can both play physical make plays and score once in a while but I think edge goes to Nolan.

    To summarize:

_There’s something called an “open roster spot” and apperantly it needs to be used.

_Richards or Williams, or both, are about to leave the country and go on tour with Greener, Willie and the player formerly known as Gagne.

_Some unknown winger will have to “sit” in order for this Toffoli kid to play. His GF calls him a “baby” so I guess he’s squeemish in the corners and isn’t a good fit for the physically overpowering roster of Kings.

_Lewis is better than Stoll (but not on draws, untimely penalties, celebrity girlfriends or OT, series-clinching snipes)

    Accurate?

    1. There is a lot of speculation about the fact we are speculating about speculation and should not speculate about the speculation until there is official speculation.

    2. The cornfield remains closed, so @Mars is sending bloggers to the penalty box.

    3. You cannot ask who’s better unless you specify does it mean more skilled or more valuable except on a Sunday afternoon when daylight savings time has been moved up a couple of weeks.

Did anybody think that with the open roster space that TT is coming so we have the option of him playing in place of dinged up forwards on different lines and see where he fits best & how he adjusts to the NHL level of play. After all, with the cap dropping next season, DL has decisions to make. All I can read into this at this point is DL is always steps ahead of all of us when it comes to the cap & the roster.

@Mars, With one bad losing streak liable to knock us out of the picture as well as the fact that we’ll have an actua, real training camp next year rest assured this is not being done just “to have a look”. Either someone is hurt or DL is hopeful that TT can contribute NOW and that means if he plays well he will be a regular, at least bottom 6 if not top 6 and WILL play in this year’s playoffs.

To speculate that it is because Richards is hurt, press 2. To speculate that it is just to fill a roster spot, press 3. To speculate we are trading a player, enter the number of the player. To speculate that bloggers shouldn’t speculate, press 4. To speculate that I would not have brought him up had another blogger not speculated it, press 5. To remind me there is a roster spot open, press 6. To send @HockeyNerd to the penalty box for being a poor imitation of @DesertKing, press 7. To ask what Kibg is better than another King, enter their uniform numbers. To find out if Tyler Toffoli can play Center, don’t bother me as I have more important things to do, such as starting rumors that he is playing center. To use half the blog arguing with other bloggers press 8. To start rumors on a slow news day, press 9. To remind the news media outside of Los Angeles that hockey is played on the west coast, don’t bother me, it’s hopeless. If this is Craig Button you could not possibly be calling as you would not know who Tyler Toffoli is or even that I manage the Kings. If this is anyone else press 0 and I will hear your offer of what you would trade for Bernier as soon as I have verified @Poorman has not tapped the conversation.
