Just got home from work and heard about the Toffoli call up. I had some questions:

    1. Can he play goalie?
    2. If so does this mean that a Bernier trade is imminent?
    3. Does he have a sister named Toffee?
    4. If he is a goal scorer, should we trade Carter?
    5. If he doesn’t work out, can we return him for Walmart dollars or straight up cash refund?
    6. If you think any of these questions are serious, can I recommend a good doctor for you?

It will be very interesting to see how effective Toffoli will be and how DS utilizes him, especially when the team is actually playing very well.

    4. No. But believe me if Carter misses a wide open net and Toffoli gets a hat trick, they will suggest that here.

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @neil,

Maybe Nolan? I am just not sure what DS can do. Everyone says that Toffoli is a top 6 type forward and I don’t see DS sitting Brown, JW, Carter or Penner.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@neil, Let me throw my opinion hat in the ring here, cuz why not? Clearly I’m a GM and a coach and a scout… Because he was *just* called up, I don’t see him playing tomorrow. If necessary (due to IR), I see Richardson taking someone’s place in a pinch – especially because he’s so versatile as a forward. DS will *probably* want to see what Toffoli is like in practice before he introduces him to an NHL game. I mean, it seems a little silly and counterproductive to just throw a rookie kid out there and say, “sink or swim, buddy!”

There’s a reason that Campbell never got to play in an NHL game even though there were times he probably would’ve been better than any of the guys we had defending our blueline.

So that’s my opinion. Let the bashing begin.

    [Reply]

    Neil Reply:

@shiny, No bashing here…good points…I just dont see him sitting…why bring him up to sit when he could be playing in a playoff race in Manchester.I know all the reasons that have been given…and some that have been given many times..I just thought I would go with my gut feeling and make a prediction…Only the staff knows why and until we hear its all speculation…but with that said..Iam going with King sitting and Toffili playing…Be a good time for a poll…Does he play tomorrow or not?? If he plays…for whom???

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@Neil, Don’t see him playing tomorrow. Earliest Tuesday. Maybe in for… Nolan? (Though he had a goal last game or an assist or something…) I don’t know. It hurts to think about it…

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@shiny, I think he will play in a top 6 right away IF Richards cannot go. And why not? He has to play his first NHL game sometime. If Richards is OK, then I think he sits a couple of games — but not very long. You cannot directly compare Campbell with Toffoli. Campbell was an emergency call-up, nothing more. Toffoli was brought up because DL thinks he is ready. He ain’t gonna sit long. I’d be fine with sitting King or even Penner.

    [Reply]

    neil Reply:

@HockeyNerd, penner??? Penner is playing great

Always liked Kelly. He did have the best back stroke in the crease out of any goalie the Kings ever had, but all that swimming almost paid off in 93′. Would have given anything to see him win it back then.

    jess Reply:

    @shiny,

Well I’m a huge fan of D pinching in and taking offensive opportunities (it does seem to be a major part of Sutter’s system). I just think DD would get a few more in with a more subtle release or with some decent one-timers.

    shiny Reply:

@shiny, He needs to take a lesson from VV on how to be in the right place to get those one timers. Because seriously, no one on the team one-times as beautifully as he does. And it’s fairly accurate, too

    DesertKing Reply:

    @jess,

He did that again last night. When takes that big back swing, it looks like Moses raising his satff and then the sea of players parts and the goalie gets a clear view of the incoming shot.

    - Has 48 points in 55 AHL games this season (28G, 20A)
    - Overall, sits second in the AHL with 28 goals in 55 games, just two goals behind Tyler Johnson of the Syracuse Crunch (who has played 59 games)
    - Tied with Edmonton prospect Justin Schultz (Oklahoma City) for the rookie scoring lead – each have 48 points, but Toffoli leads in goals, 28 to 18

Watched last nights game in Canada where Hrudey was a color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. It’s sad to say Hrudey spent about 92% of the game trashing the Kings / giving them no credit what so ever in the beat down they just handed the Flames. So disappointed we honored this guy….. as a child he was my favorite goalie of all time but as time progressed along and my hockey knowledge / understanding of the game got bigger I came to the realization that the dude was nothing special at all. Instead of giving this guy his due, we should be having Legends Night for the likes of Rob Blake, Marty McSorley, Butch Goring, Bernie Nicholls, Charlie Simmer (just to name a few). Those Kings teams of the late 80′s – early 90′s were pretty strong all over the place but our weak point was our goaltending. I know things should always be wine and roses when it comes to honoring some of the guys who gave their all in the past but lets not avoid being truthful to one another when it comes to be reality and facts.

@shiny, I dont think the hit was that dirty, 63 turned to get away from it while sims was in motion to hit, didnt execute the juke in time.

Cant blame Webber for wanting to fight, but Simms knew someone was coming.

@Mars, I didn’t think it was dirty either, just ugly. Simms always seems like he’s ready to fight – and it’s ALWAYS him. I guess you could argue that he saw Weber coming and was ready but still. Seems dumb to me.

So Sutter is going to start playing him more so that Quick will regain his confidence, which is cool (in that, he’s not “punishing” his goalie, he’s trying to lift him up and give him more confidence)

    Mikey J. Reply:

@phil sykes, That would be Sutter.

    Mikey J. Reply:

@shiny, He looked good last night. In a game that could have potentially have been a crazy game after the 1st period, he locked it down. Very important going forward. Awesome, that you were at the dinner with the team.

@Mikey J., I will never forget what a kind man he really is. I can see what the team sees in him. He is a genuinely nice person with an old school work ethic and he genuinely cares about each man on that team. I hope they do this Royal Feast again.

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mikey J., this is the same quick . same style and everything . just a worse defense . and hes losing confidense because of it . nothing to do with his back

    Mikey J. Reply:

@Mikey J., I remember when the Kings first got him a lot of the bloggers on here were like WTF? I thought of it as like getting hockey royalty and he sure hasn’t disappointed.

    phil sykes Reply:

    @Mikey J., who .. sutter or quick

    shiny Reply:

@Mikey J., He’s definitely proved he’s more than capable of being a superb goalie. I hate ECB so much because Quickie got ROBBED of the Vezina (not that it matters to him; none of these awards matter to any of these guys) who carried his freaking team to the playoffs and held them in when things looked grim for the Kings

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mikey J., oh nevermind … yur talking about sutter

    shiny Reply:

@phil sykes, whoops, I thought he was talking about Quicker, too. Ok, that’s it for me tonight. Enough before I get banished to the cornfield for stupidity (I walk away hanging my head in shame… lol)

i really love how we are in an excellent tiebreaker scenerio since we havent played many overtime games ……………… its nice to know , that in most cases , we only have to tie a team in points to beat them out … this can change , if we all of a sudden play a rash of overtime games …. but so far , so great

@Mars, Is Simmonds going to be under any scrutiny for that hit?

    [Reply]

    Mars Reply:

@Mikey J., I don’t think so. There wasn’t a call, Ennis turned at the last moment, and Simms was hitting low, even with Ennis turning and ducked/bent down a bit Simms still hit below the head, didn’t lunge/leave his feet. I don’t think he was going for boarding/cross check, just an unfortunate play. Part of the game.

@Mikey J., I’m in agree-ance with Phil on this one.

Is agreeance a real word? Whatever you get my MF’ing point!

If we made a play like that I think WM would get traded when he gets back.
DS made a comment a while ago about his health and past injuries.
Made me wonder about his future. Maybe I was looking into something not there.

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mikey J., lol …… no man , sutters flames were tough …. his teams are always tough … remember when we didnt win in calgary for years and would never score against kipper .. rhegher and sutter were there at that time … hes a good player .. real good … like i said , hes sutter taught

were not talking about oiler forwards like penner who played in different system

    Mikey J. Reply:

@phil sykes, I’ve got a lot of respect for the Flames. I was rooting for them to win it all the year they beat the Sharks in the semis. I’ve got to tell you though, when the Kings got Stoll, Green, and Smyth I could sense something big was possible. RR is a solid d man, it all depends on who we’re giving up.

    [Reply]

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mikey J., well yeah . im talking about giving up only players in the minors or ellerby …………….. obviously , i know they wont except garbage . but like forbert .. or one of our forwards … vey , pearson …… just one …….. not breaking the bank for the guy obviously … dean will work it out if he is so inclined ……. i just hope he is

    Mikey J. Reply:

@Mikey J., Geez, Greene has been out so long I forgot how to spell his name.

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mikey J., greene or mitch come back – how effective could they possible be after not playing for a year and coming off serious injury ……….. im writing them off for this season and would rather just go for a good trade

  29. phil sykes says:

now that columbus has a faint plus and is gaining confidense … this could be good for us because u know they will be tryin hard to win instead of just rolling over on most nights … this could be good for us …. if they are able to knock off some teams we are battling with – like they have been doing recently …… so hopefully they can keep it up

@Mars, That and probably the greatest d man in recent history retiring. I don’t think anyone will feel sorry for them if they don’t qualify for the playoffs.

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mars, thats fine by me mikey ….. detroit , like nashville , have quicks number …………………. plus , eventhough jimmy howard is merely average …….. against the kings he always plays great ………. so dont think detroit would be a good matchup for us with datsuyk and zetterburg who always kill us ……… but who knows …. any team will be tough .. theres nothing separating any of the teams …….. only chicago has proven they are probably a slight notch above right now if they are healthy come playoff time … but of course that sligjht notch can be erased in the first round with a hot goalie and a confident defensive team like nashville , or phoenix

Still trying to figure out whom we will keep next year..
    http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=17
Penner – Not sure, tries hard but the cost makes me say no.
    Richardson – Doubtful
Clifford – Yes, hope he’s not gonna cost too much.
Lewis – Yes, also hope he wont cost much.
Nolan – Yes, hoping he wont cost much too.
Scuderi Yes I imagine same cost. (3.4)
Voynov Yes – Playing like he is worth a big contract too…
Martinez Hope so, but its a matter of cost and cap.
Ellerby Not sure need more time on this one.
Drewiske hmmm waffling on a yes no on him.
Muzzin Yeah, should be able to keep him cheap.
Bernier I doubt we could keep him, would LOVE to have two splitting duties, just cant see it happening. Plus it will really screw with the cap. Time will tell.

But we still have upcoming trades and the summer to deal with.

    [Reply]

    phil sykes Reply:

@Mars, yea . depends if we make any trades …. and how the season goes …….. worry about that in the summer ….. dean will work it all out …. we have plenty of space to manuever

    Curious.
    I am never right.
Never woulda guessed Fras for Smythe
or Ellerby for Loki in a 3 way trade.
    MR or Carts either.
    Been a wild ass ride.

I never would even think about it in the past, just trying to guess the lineup for after the trade deadline and next season. Mostly cause of the cap change.

    Thinking too much I s’pose.

@Mars, just get rhegher and we can do this again

    luc20rules Reply:

@Mars, I got on the Richards bandwagon in the rumor stage, and was harassed on this site for asking for Carter over Nash. It was more a value evaluation where Carter would have a reasonable price, but Nash was rumored at Kopi, Brown, & Multiple high draft picks. I even went as far as to say Carter would be the most talented player moved at last years deadline. Now I say stay put. Have said it all season no major trade unless Mitchell just comes out and says he will not be ready this year. Then we knock on a couple of doors to see if we can find a stop gap fill(there is no replacing Mitchell), but don’t sell the farm.

This kid seems pretty special. Then again, Bernier was the AHL goalie of the year and he’s just moving along.

I’m glad Mr. Lombardi likes marinading these guys a good while in the lower levels. TT is pushing the recipe.

All our forwards are fresh cup champs but still if Coach Sutter has someone better he will use them without apology. I love that the .most about him.
