Stanley Cup Moments

If you’ve been logging on to LAKings.com or arriving at games early, you’ve been treated to a new feature produced by Kings Vision, Stanley Cup Moments.

A collection of videos depicting pivotal moments leading up to the Kings’ Stanley Cup triumph have been deftly edited and contain interviews with the actors and architects of the particular feats and the dissection and analysis of each event.

Prior to Thursday’s game against Dallas, fans arriving early at Staples Center caught Episode 2 – Penner’s OT Winner, which is an in-depth account of the lead up-to and execution of Dustin Penner’s overtime goal at Jobing.com Arena that clinched the Western Conference Championship for Los Angeles.

@phil sykes, Ducks already over next years estimated cap with Perry, Selanne, Koivu, Lydman, Lovejoy, Palmieri, Beleskey, & McMillan not counting towards it. If they do sign Perry he likely would like to match his performance over RG at $8.25 mil/yr so 9 mil/yr is modest by that comparison. Where do they cut 9+ mil/yr, and that is already assuming that the 7 other UFA & RFA players above won’t be back.

Awesome, Thanks Jon. I hope that slows some of the silly reactionary posts from last nights loss. The Kings are fine. Watch some film, play with better focus. Thats it, really simple. We have 2 at home vs Calgary lets win them both and then win 8 or more standing points in the 6 straight divisional games.

@luc20rules, Sutter made a comment after practice today that indicated that he didn’t think they were doing that poorly, at least not the “kids” as he put it.

    - On if the kids are ready to listen: “Jeez, we just won friggin’ eight out of 11. They must not have totally waxed up, have they? I think the earth is flat. And they look out over, the earth is flat, right?”

Not sure what that means exactly but I think he’s saying that it’s not as bad as it seems.

If Colorado wins ill be so happy. Tired of hearing about the Blackhawks.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@Lake Forest, Oh me too. I don’t mind if the Hawks win (they can keep their win streak for all I care as long we manage to stay within reach of the top 5), but I’ll be damned if I’m not super freaking happy. Hawks are starting to have breakdowns and they just took a penalty.

These announcers sound like they’re for the Hawks, though, so I could do without that.

    scuderi ….. doughty
    voynov ……….. player x
    martinez ………. muzzin

scuds and doughty play well together … always have …. they read each other very well

get voynov a top 4 big tuff guy , stay at home guy

salo or riguer would be perfect

they both know the western conference and western conference forwards

salo a little old , yes , but if we want to repeat …. we need this …. even more than offense

so if u have to give up bernier , or forward in minors or both ……. u do it , because we need it ……………. it might be overpaying for older salo , but its the price u pay trying to repeat ………….. riguer would be a dream because sutter knows him and riguer knows sutter

at this point ……….. the earliest mitchell or greene might possibly come back is 2 weeks before the playoffs …….. so they will not have played a serious hockey game in almost a year ………. they will be left behind immediately ….. u cant just throw them into a playoff chase or playooffs themselves with them being out so long ………….. so for this reason …… i am not interested in their services this season ………… shelve them till next year where they can have a full offseason and training camp and full regular season to get back to where they were and make another run next year

but as for this year … we need a top 4 stay at home tuff guy if we are going to repeat ….. just my opinion

just too many breakdowns on defense ……… get the championship formula back together

    doughty ……. scuds
voynov …….. mitchell replacement thru trade
    martinez …… greene replacement (muzzin)

Anyways, the Kings are 8 for 11 in their last few games, so why trade now? Doesn’t that seem a bit of a panic move?

    phil sykes Reply:

@shiny, not going to repeat with muzzin playing agasnt the sedin twins or the hawks forwards ………….. hes not that great on defense …. put him back with martinez where we can still exploit his offense thruout the game and powerplays …. put doughty and scuds back together …….. and get voynov a mitchell clone replacement ……. its a winning dominant formula .. get back to it as fast as possible ……….. our defense is not very good with the 2 injuries and with everybody playing with different partners they arent accustomed to ……………… just get back to the winning formula …… doughty and scuds like playing otgether and read each other very well ………… voynov can then work things out with his new mitchell clone …….. and martinez and muzzin will be fine as a 5 , 6 pairing ….. its a winning formula ……. kings need to get back to it if dean can swing the trade i suggested

once again peeps , chicago losing is a bad thing …………. even daryll sutter needs to tell u guys who to root for ….. ducks and hawks

kings are not a regular season team … they will always struggle just to get in … because the kings like to save all their energy for the playoffs ….. this is why the kings win a couple because they have to – but then they let down because now they know – okay we won a couple – we can just play pond hockey tonight – no biggie …. and then they lose a game or two .. then they are forced to buckle down and play the next several like playoff games to get there cusion back .. this is how the kings approach the regular season …..

not saying they are trying to lose ………… but its a subcounscous thing with this team ……… in reality , they know the regualr season is meaningless … so they dont like to get too vested in it …… they want to save all their goals and all the hard work for the games that really count – the playoffs

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@phil sykes, I’m only rooting for Chicago to lose because I’m so sick of everyone singing their praises and saying how utterly fabulous this team is. They’re going to have an asterisk (*) in the history books with this one but I’ll admit, an 11 game win streak is very impressive.

I know after tonight Chi-town will bounce right back and get back to their win streak. I just like to see the big dogs (I’ll admit not the Kings) taken down a few pegs every once in a while just to see that they’re not inhuman. Yes, I’m cruel and a terrible person but I own it.

    [Reply]

    phil sykes Reply:

@shiny, who cares if they talk about them …….. its regular season so who cares if they win or lose or get talked about …. chicago ……. right now we want them to win because it improves our chances of making the playoffs

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@phil sykes, I know. Trust me, I know. This is all very rational but I’m not a highly rational being. On the one hand, I don’t want us to lose our standings but on the other hand, it’s kinda nice to see Chicago go down. But yes, it is better if Vancouver and Ducks and Hawks win against everyone except us.

    Goring 19 Reply:

@phil sykes, quite a run for the Hawks but they are human after all…

    Mars Reply:

    @phil sykes, in 45 years,
The Kings have missed the playoffs 18 times.
    Made the playoffs 26 times.
    Had 18 first round exits.
    Had 8 2nd round exits.
    Took the Division once 90-91
    Won the conference once 92-93
Have been to the SCF twice.92-93 11-12
    Won one Stanley cup. 11-12

Dont get me wrong, this is NOT a thrashing.
    Life long Kings fan here.

But saying we are built for the playoffs doesn’t seem right.
Maybe its the skeptic in me, I want it to be true, but the stats are there.
Hell maybe I am missing the point.

@phil sykes, lol my bad, wasn’t paying attention to the veritable plethora of sarcasm. ha

    phil sykes Reply:

@phil sykes, you know we have alot of vets … especially our forward stars who know the regular season is not what it is about .. so subconscously they let down a lil after winning a few games in the regular season and have a game or two cushion …. this team knows they arent the most skilled team and that it takes work to win for them …. so they dont like to waste that on the regular season …… and then go into their goal scoring droughts in the playoffs because of bad puckluck … they want to hit the playoffs with puckluck on their side … knowing okay , now we are going to work the hardest we have all season . and then when u do that , then puck luck gets created .. thru hard work …….. its a convoluted psycological thing ………….. why waste your goals for games that dont matter …….. just gear yourself up for the playoff to really work and we will be rewarded then

but u have to do enough to get into the playoffs ….. and im confident they will do just enough – just like the last 3 years

    Mars Reply:

@phil sykes, Going forward needs to be proven still but I am always happy when we at least make the playoffs.

I think we are poised to be serious contenders for a long time, not even worried about a bad start or flukey games anymore. I was steamed about the nucks loss tho..

    jet Reply:

@phil sykes, agree 100% that we are built for the playoff, but I think it is because we wear teams our during a series. Size and skating can beat skill and skating in a 7 game series. The reason we dominated last playoff is because we averaged one game above minumun per series, so we had a good amount of rest going into a series.

    [Reply]

    phil sykes Reply:

@jet, we have to work to score ….. so dont waste that work on the regular season … not being a skilled team per say … we dont want to wear ourselves out on the reular season …… because we need to be in full outwork the other team mode during the playoffs … so u dont want to be worn down .. for the kings … its suits them to be a 6th , 7th or 8th seed …….. and plus then puckluck will be on your side because we are bound to go on a streak like last playoffs , because we will be outworking teams … and then thats when goals start going in for this team

like u only see it during the regular season for a few games …. then it goes away because they relax and have a lil cushion … so they lay stinkers – then they win again when they have to ……. its been this way the last 3 years or so ….. they just have a subcouncios thing – hey , lets not waste all these wins … lets save um for when they count .. with otrher teams that wouldnt work ….. but this kings team has alot of vets at forward especially who know how to pace themselves for the big games …. players like richards and brown etc…

@King Alex, Bingo! I was surprised to find out that he actually is third on the team in points with six goals and 11 assists for a total of 17 points.

My trivia got a little dragged out lol but I was like hey, this is something interesting and very surprising.

After the game 5 win in Phoenix last year I remember leaving NHL Tonight on all night long and waking up a several times to the bliss of the Kings bench racing across the ice to celebrate Penner’s goal. What made it really great was that regardless of any biases, everybody knew that was the coolest moment in the playoffs, up to that point, and it was to be continued in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Evil Load: But how much longer can we go with it? I mean, the fans are back, so do you think we should stop the streak?
Bill: Well, when baseball went on strike, they ran the Sammy Sosa/Mark Maguire home run competition for more than a year.
Evil Load: But our season ends in a couple of months.
    Bill: Oh, I forgot
Evil Load: Maybe we should change gears and start talking about the Stanley Cup champs?
    Bill: The Kings, really?
Evil Load: Oh yea, I forgot.
Bill: Well, maybe we should switch gears.
Evil Load: I’ve got an idea, lets make a big PR campaign about the top 2 goal scorers in the league?
Bill: Well, that would be Stamkos from Tampa and Carter from the Kings.
Evil Load: The Kings again? And we have a team in Tampa?
Bill, Yes to both sir. I guess they won’t work. Any other ideas?
Evil Load: I guess we will just have to go with the standard. Start shortening up Tappen’s skirts and talk about Syd and Ovi.

I watched Penner Thursday night make a move with the Puck along the boards that was so quick. It was the first time I’d seen the potential first hand. But having seen it I realize now that he was caught in no man’s land after he left the Oilers. Sutter could see where he was most valuable and thankfully Penner has finally grasped it.

He’s going to be making Doughty money, there’s no way they can pull that off.

    @California Royalty,

    Gagne 3.1
    Penner 3.2
    Richardson 1.5
    Current cap space 2.3

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@DesertKing, I asked Mayor John Hoven about the cap space and he thinks that DL is going to try and lock down Brownie and Scuds before he makes a move with the RFAs. Or at least, most important is #7 then he’ll decide what to do with the RFAs as he can’t make an “official” move on Brownie til July

@DesertKing, Of course this is only a guess as no one really knows what’s going on in DL’s head

@DesertKing, Quicks cap hit goes up 4 million next season, and RFA’s like VV, TL, AM, and KFC will all be due raises. There’s no way the Kings could afford Perry without trading guys like Williams, Stoll, and not re-signing Scuds. Plus, I HATE Perry.

@goldielocks, I don’t know whether to be hoping that it’s really lingering back issues that have been restricting him and his effectivity, or that it’s a lack of form or confidence.

    goldielocks Reply:

    @goldielocks,

I think it’s his lower body weakness because he didn’t have enough time to recover or train. But once he gets comfortable on his edges, he’ll be all right. It’s just that weird feeling that you know you can do it but your body is not reponding in the way it used to.
