After the win over St. Louis, Darryl Sutter commended the play of his “four kids” on defense, mentioning Jake Muzzin, Keaton Ellerby, Slava Voynov and Drew Doughty by name.
After today’s morning skate, Sutter made it quite clear that he hadn’t simply forgotten Alec Martinez’s name while evaluating the play of his 25-year-old blueliner.
Darryl Sutter, on his evaluation of Alec Martinez’s play since his return from injured reserve:
“He’s struggled. Quite honestly, when he got hurt, the team was, quite honest, not playing as well as they should have and he…has to be a bigger part of the solution if he wants to stay in the lineup. I think that he’s a young player that hasn‘t played much in this league, and my job is to teach them and make sure they’re prepared to compete, but if they don’t learn and they don’t compete, then they’re going to have trouble with me in terms of how much they play and if they play. And that’s the truth.”
Poor Marty. Not his best game last night. Certainly not his worst. I hope he improves enough to stay in the lineup. He could be a good asset to the team but we’ll see

@Z, I agree. This is pretty silly of Sutter IMO. Since when doesn’t Martinez want to compete? The guy is 2 games in after spending 3 weeks recovering. It seems counterproductive to me to say this publicly. And that’s the truth.

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), well he’s an honest guy and I’m not sure if he was asked or volunteered the information. I do agree he might be a little harsh on Martini because he’s not getting a lot of ice time in his first 2 games back. Who knows? Maybe Marty will improve in the same fashion as Muzzle after the infamous “road apples” comment from Sutter

@xeropoint,
He had a few ugly turnovers in our zone. In the O zone, a couple of times he went to pinch and kind of cruised into contact and didn’t get the puck or keep it in the zone. Ironically, that led to him taking a bigger hit a few times than if he just would’ve gone in full speed and won the race to the puck.
He’ll get better with more time.

@Z,
I think you are right. If you think about it, since he won the Cup (yes, lets not forget, AMart was part of the team that steamrolled through the playoffs and was never a liability), he has had his face totally rebuilt, which cost him a lengthy recovery and loss of playing/practice time, and then the upper body injury which cost him additional time. He will work his way back in.
[Reply]
Sometimes I don’t think that first game back stuff really applies. Players come back from injurys, get traded, basically go through all knids of weird senarios and sometimes they play like crap and sometimes they have an amazing game…just like every other game. These players have been playing hockey their entire life. I’m sure it impacts but I think the media makes it a way more bigger deal than it really actually is.

Never shy to defend Marty I have to say I’m quite surprised DS is calling him out. But I think there is more going on. Marty if any of you have seen him outside the rink is a very reserved guy. I think that carries onto the ice where it may not seem like he is competing or working hard enough but he is basically the same player. A few mistakes in his return I think is magnified because of his partners where last year you had Greener almost always covering for him. Now when a mistake is made I think there is more cause for concern. Although all the young guys have played well. Even Whiskey whose game I really liked before getting pulled from the line up.

To Russ D. How do youf feel about DS WRT your book?? Iam being serious…Would love to hear your take..thanks Neil

Can’t quite understand why people are so sensitive to the truth. A Mart needs to be better to stay in the lineup. People are acting like Martinez is a middle school student and the teacher is chastizing him for not doing his homework. Deal with the facts and quit whinning.

@HIT EM’, don’t think anyone is being “sensitive” as you put it. The kid just came off IR so people are surprised Sutter would have such strong words about his performance. Martini didn’t play super poorly, but it’s not like he had a stand out performance either. People are just surprised is all

To the point ..right??? As a player you cant asked for more…You know where you stand..and DS is there to help you grew as a player and as a person….NO BS….

I think Sutter’s just trying to push him. Alex looks a little tentative this year. Maybe the reconstructive surgery has him afraid to get into the battles he needs to get in. Darryl’s just sending a little motivation.

Sutter isn’t calling him out here….as he stated it’s the truth. Kid gets smashed in the face during the lockout, recovers then gets hurt in the show. Nothing is wrong, just be patient. Give him a couple more games and he’s back to form. Come playoff time we could see Greener and Willie back and its Ellerby who, and even Muzzin what?

still better than drewiske … give him some time to warm up after his injury. this shot just gives him a heads up to get his game up!

@SpencerMaze, Technically two games back. He played against Nashville and St Louis. I was at the Nashville game and he was dreadful, but you kind of expect it to take a bit before he gets his bearings. I like Amart, but the other guys are playing really well. I think his lack of performance just stands out in comparison.
He’ll be okay once he gets back in the flow I think. Sutter tells it like it is, and it usually motivates guys to show up. Thumbs up to Sutter, and good luck to Marty.
[Reply]
DS obviously knows more and sees more about AMart’s play and practice than many of us. And he has been a straight shooter all the while, so if this is his way of getting AMart’s attention that he needs to improve, so be it.

Love it. It’s good for our young guys to feel the pressure and to be held accountable. Marty can do it but now he has to perform every game and every practice.
