March 7 postgame quotes: Jonathan Quick

On whether the team’s play varies over the course of a long home stand:
“It’s another game. It’s no different whether you’re on the road or at home. Same thing. [You’ve] got to win a hockey game. We didn’t do it today.”

On the challenges in the third period:
“They scored more than us. We were able score more than the other team last game in the third period, and they were able to do it tonight. That’s why they won.”

On what allowed Dallas to outscore L.A. in the third period:
“I didn’t stop them, and usually when you don’t stop the pucks, they go in the net.”

I don’t know the exact infliction he used but just seeing those words, he sounds angry. I don’t blame him but not all the goals were 100% his fault (second yes, he should’ve had that. First one was a PP and bad D breakdowns along with the 4th. I’m still out on the third one as they had a wide open net. Was he too strong for his own good or was it more a matter of bad defensive breakdown again?)

@shiny, The third goal they scored was a puck that crossed his crease,he is responsible for passes from behind his net and cross crease passes.

@shiny, I think he had a chance on ONE, and if he was on top of his game, he would have gotten that one. They still lose 4-2 with bad defense, and not enough offense. Dallas played the kind of game that gives them fits.

When DS looks at the game films and sees Quick constantly getting himself out of position and surrendering large areas of his net to opposition shooters. I’m thinking he’s praying more that Bernier come through than Quick regain his run to the cup form.

It’s evident the Kings are missing Mitchell and Greene in the DZONE especially these past two games.
    Blown coverage!!!

@rogiesbackup, correct, except it has been 4 games. We have to cut down on the high quality chances, especially Scuds and DD

@rogiesbackup, this explains everything, the Kings were trying to give some data points for tomorrow’s event.
Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems engineers are teaming with Los Angeles Kings players Willie Mitchell and Justin Williams to help Da Vinci High School students understand the geometry and statistics behind why some hockey shots are considered more high percentage than others at this event.

@rogiesbackup, Its been all season. Our PK used to frustrate other teams allowing us to draw penalties and score in transition as they make mistakes. Now other teams are building momentum and/or scoring on our PK. Last Year PK #4 and 87% and #1 and 92.1% in the playoffs. This year before this game PK #15 and 81.6%. Kings allowed 2 PK goals out of 4 attempts tonight, so assuming the other teams were inactive that would drop us to 17th.

Hmm… Maybe what Sutter should do is keep splitting the goalies in every game. Quick can start on Saturday and then Bernie can finish. Then Bernie can start on Monday and Quick can finish.

    What do you guys think??

@shiny, JB on Sat,JQ on the next one.Why does the D play better when JB is in net ( of course not the last game) but JB has only been giving up 1 or 2 goals a game, last year it was the other way,so somethings up.

    shiny Reply:

@LVKINGS88, I dunno. I just know that all of a sudden, Kings decided to get back into the game on Tuesday night when JB was pulled for JQ

@shiny, Typically, they’ve been playing better defense for Bernier, but yeah, in that game, they tightened up after Bernier was pulled.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@shiny, I think they should split back-to-back games, and maybe an occasional additional game for Bernier.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Totally agree. Bernier has earned his starts but JQ needs to play in order to have confidence to get up to the Quick we know.

Think Ellerby needs more seasoning….he’s just too slow and lacks authority. He if he is a STAY – AT – HOME dMan then he needs to be more authoritative in front of Quickie/Bernier.

Not looking good for quick. Not sure what I’d do at this point, good thing I’m not the coach. Hard to sit the guy who carried the team last year but he just isn’t getting it done this year. Yeah a lot of the oppositions goals are a result of bad coverage but that’s what the goalie is for. To cover his d-men and make the unbelievable stops. I still have faith in him though. Hoping its just his back and a timing issue.

  7. Gustavo says:

Just once, Quick…do it just once!!
Freak them all out and let them have it.
Oh how I’d like to read or hear Quick rip the D men a new exit orifice when they do not do their job, cause turn overs and get caught completely out of position or the forwards fail to support, do not move their feet in the D zone or watch opponents cruise around in front of them.

Tonight would have been a good night to do it.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

@Gustavo, While it may have been well deserved, he didn’t exactly step up and do his own job. It’s a team sport so they failed together as a team, not JUST the defense

  8. What's the frequency, Kenneth? says:

There was exactly one goal he had a chance at, and he almost got that one. It’s reasonable to say he probably should have. As for the other three…nope. The most popular guy in the building wouldn’t have gotten them either.

Let’s be blunt. The defense is inconsistent without Willie and Greener. They’ve improved, but they’re still not where they need to be. Quick isn’t where he was in the playoffs, but who is? I think if the defense gets consistent, he’ll get better too. The thing not to do is “rest” him. He plays better in the rotation, and with all the games they’ll be playing, they should BOTH be in the rotation.

JQ’s 2 biggest problems r the loss of WM n MG. I don’t think Dallas gets either of those pp goals with either Mitchell or Green or in there. The pass to Jagr never gets through n when Eakins finally gets the puck under control he would have been knocked on his A. We can’t come close to replacing that talent right now.

Also, JQ knew exactly where those two would b relative to his positioning n puck location, etc…so he’s lost that comfort level.

Finally, he also needs to play more to get his timing back, etc….I don’t think a platoon system benefits him as much as it does Bernier.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@linny, Well, given the cramped schedule, I don’t think either player would be “missing” too much action if they split all of ‘em in March. Something tells me Sutter will keep us all guessing on that, though.

  10. crashin' da net says:

Clearly you can tell JQ is pissed giveinthese responses. Too much at himself and too little at his Dmen. Keep playing the bst you can. The core problems tend to become obviously visible. Tough it out and rise to beat it.

Bottom line is that our defense in front of Quick/Bernier is horrible. Infact, if you look at the scores of all the Kings games… Well, you won’t see 1 shutout by our Con Smythe Trophy Winner and Current holder. Big 10 yr contract and the lockout has stumped the best goalie in the league.
