Three for 77

Carter’s “greasy” goal:

“Yeah, that was real ugly. I was trying to pass it backdoor there. That’s probably why I’ve got two assists all year.”

Goals two and three happened so quickly that they made one video. Here’s to hat tricks on hat nights:

    [Reply]

    Mars Reply:

    @Tyler, I didnt like that, but its Foxy and I appreciate that he isnt a homer, but watching the replays on it, it wasnt a dive, he looked pissed about it too.

    Bob and Jim have a nice way of calling the Kings out when they need too, they back it with facts and previous examples, stats, etc. They dont unnecissarily praise or trash, its great work.

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @Mars,

    I’ll have to concur with Tyler, that fall looked like it was embellished a bit. I love Brownie, but he needs to do away with that part of his game. He’s able to draw penalties without it, IMO.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

    @vplaza, It was a HUGE embellishment, although he wasn’t counting on flying into the boards like that (making it look even worse) which was only due to the natural momentum of the defenseman.
    Brownie flopped and got himself into that situation but he won a penalty and he’ll be very happy for it.
    Lucky the lazy refs around the league always go to bed early and miss the comprehensive Kings highlights every night on NHLN!

    vplaza Reply:

    @Duncanz,

    He’d be so much more respected and feared around the league if he took that out of his game. As it stands, he has both the reputation of being a big hitter, good player, but also a flopper.

    Of course, Captain of a Stanley Cup Champion is also something he’s known for, so I guess it’s okay.

    -Bernier A+
    -Doughty A
    -Muzzin A
    -Voynov A+
    -Martinez A
    -Scuderi A-
    -Ellerby B+
    -Kopitar B
    -Brown A-
    -Williams B
    -Stoll B-
    -King A
    -Lewis A-
    -Richards A-
    -Carter A++
    -Penner A+
    -Fraser A
    -Nolan A
    -Clifford A-
    -Quick n/a
    -Sutter A

    DS seemed to stick to his lines last night and played all 4 lines which you have to do to be successful in this league.

    [Reply]

    bbb7 Reply:

    @harty, It’s hard for me to grade players in a game where it’s so defensive you only have 6 SOG after two periods. I couldnt give Bernier an A+ tho since he had hardly anything to do.

    harty Reply:

    @bbb7, for me its all about the other little things that matter, setting pucks up for D, communication to D, ensuring you are ready when there isn’t many shots some could go to sleep back there. Good job JB on all accounts hence the A+ rating……

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @harty,

    Only things I’d probably change is AMart to A- (his first game back was a little uneven) and Kopitar to B+ (while the stat sheet didn’t reflect it, he had a number of good shifts in the offensive zone that wore down the Preds and he made the right defensive reads in his own zone).

    [Reply]

    harty Reply:

    @vplaza, I’m reasonable and I somewhat agree with A-Mart comment but in my eyes Anze Kopitar is the best player in the West if not top 10 in all NHL.
    And that comes with responsiblity in both ends and neutral zone.
    he can be better and he know’s it.
    (faceoffs, distribution of puck, finishing opportunities)
    Kopi stays B till tonight and I think he is going to light it up folks…….

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @harty,

    Fair enough. Expectations are higher for him.

    PRMan Reply:

    @vplaza, Martinez played so poorly that DS is thinking of taking him out. I watched him pretty closely. Seemed like a C performance to me (not necessarily a surprise given it was his first game back).

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

    @harty, I’d give Marty a B+ and Ellerby an A-. Marty’s first game back, yes, but expectations are raised in that case, not lowered. Martini’s first 3x handling the puck were all turnovers right in front of the net.

    I liked that Ellerby seems more confident now and he even attempted a SOG.

    [Reply]

    Michael J. Reply:

    @harty,

    If Bernier isn’t sharp the Kings are down 2-0 in the first period. I thought he deserved the #1 star.

  16. DesertKing says:

    Seemed like the way to beat Nashville is to get to the net and score that first gol, because once the Preds get behind, they have to open up a little and they don’t have the talent to play a more open game. Oh yea, put Bernier in the net against them. He just has their number.

    [Reply]

    shiny Reply:

    @vplaza, IMO, Quick can handle the competition. How many times is the media going to ask if there is a “goalie controversy?” Bernier is a good sport about it and knows he is #2. So what would the message be to Quick? He’s not.going to get better if he doesn’t play. I think DK had it right, JB gets the start against “weaker” offense teams

    [Reply]

    vplaza Reply:

    @shiny,

    To me, the message is “get your goals against average down our else we go with the hot goaltender”. Sutter was pretty clear about needing JQ to improve in that not too long ago. And since JB has not started back to back games before and prevailing wisdom and past experiences would have suggested a JQ start, it adds to it.

    Michael J. Reply:

    @Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com),

    Nice. Quickie need the rest and time to take some pressure off. After last night’s game I said Bernier is now the #1 goalie. That is just for now. Give him five of the next eight starts then Quickie gets back in the saddle.

    If playoffs started today its a no brainer – Quickie starts and plays every game.
