On the challenges presented by Vancouver:
“They got a lead, and we came back and [it was] similar to our other games. Tough game. They scored four goals, right? That’s a big challenge.”
On what didn’t work against Vancouver:
“They scored on the few opportunities that they had.”
On Jonathan Quick appearing to “fight to the puck”:
“I agree.”
On what Quick needs to do to get back on track:
“Not fight the puck.”
On battling from behind:
“We did a good job. We had a lot of good opportunities. It’s hard when you’ve got to score four goals.”
On containing the Sedins:
“Well, they’re two really good players. One might lead the league in assists, and one might lead the league in goals, so…your defensemen that you play against them have to be on their game, and your goaltender has to be on his game.”
On the team’s next step:
“We’re just going to fly home, get home in the middle of the night and play Nashville on Monday.”
On whether any momentum was lost:
“There’s no momentum in a 48-game schedule. You win, you move on. You lose, you move on.”

My fear is that Quick may have lost his edge. Happens with goalies all the time. They are really good (think Steve Mason) and then they are not. And the team has many pennies tied up in Mr. Quick. Let’s hope it’s just a bad stretch of games or at worst a bad season and not the second coming of Khabibulin.

Quickie and Mason are hardly comparable:
1) Mason had a great rookie year and has followed it up with three sub-par years. Conversely, Quich has improved each of his three and a half years with the Kings.
2) Quick has a Stanley Cup. Mason has squat.

Man, I hope the Kings find the couple solid “stay-at-home” Dmen for our future kings. Muzzin and Whiskey are more of a Two-way-defense men and Ellerby appears good, but been in the league five years already. He still doesn’t have too much of an impact in the Dzone.

@rogiesbackup, I think Ellerby is improving at a steady rate. Not fast enough to dig us out of this hole we’re in.
However, we have 2 very good stay at home Dmen technically on roster at the moment. But our team has been plagued with unfortunate injuries.
Kopi is injured (playing with a knee brace tells me he’s not 100%), Brown might be a bit dinged up (not a lot of hitting tonight or against Detroit, but lots of hitting against Ducks), Marty was injured (has been activated from IR, though), Greener and Mitchie are both injured, and JQ had back surgery over the summer. So 4 of our best players on the team are injured and our #1 goalie had surgery over the summer (props to Bernie for stepping up, though). I just hope the guys can clean up sloppy defensive work and get back in the game on Monday.
OK, I have said my peace. I am officially out, I promise.

@Gary Edwards, Ellerby ‘not having impact’ may be because he is a stay at home type of player.
As far as landing any wide body backliners, it won’t happen without giving up something of great value. Is DL in that mode? I don’t believe so. The need for D may not be as desperate as, sya, the need we had for a goal scorer last season at this time.

@rogiesbackup, Not sure why there is the way to bash Ellerby. Why not Voynov (-3), DD(-2) Scudery(-3) Ellerby came up even (0) and did not play that bad. To me Scuds is got to slow, yes he still blocks shots but opposition players skating circles around him. He is been a minus defenseman since he got to LA and we still want to resign him with more money???? Maybe it’s time to say goodby to him while we can still trade him.

Obviously we are not as strong defensively this year with Mitchell and Greene out, but I think are D is improving. Muzzin is playing better every game, and Ellerby is coming around. Once we get Martinez back we will be a lot better. Drewiskie needs to get sent down back to the minors, he just makes too many mistakes.

over the last 3 seasons , including playoffs , the kings have not comeback from a 2 goal deficit to win a hockey game (excluding 2 shootout wins)
that is absolutely ridiculous …… when they get down by 2 goals over this timespan on many occasions they simply appear to quit – knowing 2 goals is insurmountable to them … not always , but it seems way more than any team in the league ………………….you know u can see it in their body language etc…. they begin to pout ………………………….. now im not saying this was the case tonight in vancouver necesarily , but i do believe a trade for another scorer like vanek to complete the richards is needed …….. and if u cant pull that deal off because sabres want to much – then at least call up toffoli and give him a shot …….. i know penner is playing better ….. but weve been through this a million times with him … and lewis on that line isnt any better – lewis was horrible tonight
again …. i know we had horrible defensive issues tonight … and i know quick didnt play his best game either . but some nights thats going to happen – even to the best of them …. you know … just a bad game ….. it happens to everybody
but that no 2 goal comeback thing to win a hockey game in 3 years speaks for itself ….. are u kidding me !!!
offense continues to be our achilles heel … i mean did anybody actually think we had a chance when they made it 4 – 2
we still need offense … we saw how just getting jeff carter can help so much ……… we need to get one more good finisher

Defense or lack there of is the problem. Not stopping the other team and not getting the quick breakouts. Plus our top D men are playing hard minutes. When u are a defense based team and you are depleted there, that is the problem. Drewiske sucks, muzzin is young, ellerby is new to the system and needs D support which he is not getting the best of. A mart coming back will help. Just goes to show you how valuable WM and MG are.

DS believes that the system tells you what to do and he can mix and match as needed. He’s got a cup to prove it works.
Still, I think that long periods (weeks and more) of essentially static lines help players really learn each others styles and creates a lot more opportunities and far fewer miscues.

Most of you folks here think Sutter is a brilliant coach. So maybe you can explain something to me. Why, when your team falls behind two goals in the third period do you continue rotating four lines, especially when your 4th line has a history (9 goals in 180 man-games last year) of not being able to finish. Last night, the 4th line got a regular shift all the way until the end of the game. Frazier’s goal a few games ago was an ugly goal, the only kind that this line seems to score. The goals scored by Nolan and Clifford have come by playing with other lines. Last night Nolan scored when he was out there with Penner (Don’t know the other forward)and the goaltender got out of position. Clifford-Frazier-Nolan is just not a sigificant offensive threat. I realize that Sutter (and all his devotees here) is completely dedicated to his “system,” but does the system think for him? Does it make sense to give 4-5 minutes of playing time during a period to a line that is not a scoring threat when the team is behind two goals? With less than two minutes left they were out there again. I kept asking myself, “Are we trying to win this game?” Seems to me we needed some creative thinking in a situation like that, not thinking hostage to a “system.” More creative coaches put their offensive players out there in that situation. It seems to me that I would have divided the last five minutes between my top two scoring lines, using the Stoll line to spell them when a breather when needed and shelving the 4th line. In a situation like that it doesn’t matter how much energy you generate if you can’t FINISH! I kept wishing that Loktionov was on that 4th line–someone who could finish.

@Russ Dynda,
Here’s a stat that tells me that this “system” is negating the early slow start,
and the way the KINGS are headed.
Including the Feb 10th game in detroit (10 games–6 on the road) the KINGS are 7-3.
In the 3rd period of those games:
KINGS 13 goals
oponents 3 goals (1 was the ENG from van last night)
Note: The KINGS were ahead or tied after the 2nd period of most of these games.
Yes, they lost the 2 of the games they were behind after the 2nd.
The teams they were playing were trying their best to win the game.
With the lack of experience of more than half of the defensemen
that were playing have, I attribute a lot of that
success to the “system”.

@Russ Dynda, You also need to keep in mind we have a ton of games this month in the compacted schedule. One loss is one loss; you cant jeopardize the rest of the games this week by going away from your system on the off chance you might come back and win this ONE game. If the season rode on this game and it was the last game of the season you can be sure you wouldnt have seen the 4th line in the 3rd.
You need to look at the Big Picture sometimes. It’s a long season.

Hey, that system won us the cup! I think Coach likes to roll 4 lines especially on the road, and I have no problem with that philosophy even if we are down on the scoreboard. Would like us to add another two-way player who is a little more dominant offensively (Shane Doan) to our top nine. We have a few players in our top six who could easily move down a line and fit in (gritty, two-way game).
[Reply]
I have no problem with your disagreeing. I just don’t understand why we tend to limit ourselves by classifying things as “eastern” and “western.” The last I heard, the rules were the same in both conferences. When you’re behind in a game you need to play offensive hockey. If that’s “eastern” style, then we’d better learn to play it part of the time or we’ll lose most of the games in which we fall behind.

@Russ Dynda,
Did you ever consider that Sutter was sending a message to Richards, Carter , etc.
Even though Quick contributed to them (along with Scuderi and Voynov) being a -3,
he sat Carter out a few shifts in the 3rd.
Imagine that, a defenseman (Voynov) leads an offensive rush.
The forward (Carter, Richards, or Lewis), who is supposed to be backing him up,
joins the rush,which is broken up, and leads to a 2 on 1 the other way
(with the sedins none the less) which leads to a goal.
Seems like to me that was was “offensive” hockey.
The bad decision defensively was the problem.
Happens a lot, ask phila, pitt, tampa bay, etc.
Offensive teams without a defensive structure.
It’s difficult to have it work both ways, as you would like it.
As for me, I’m comfortable with what is currently working

Russ Dynda Reply:

@trytodethroneus, So to you, sending some kind of disciplinary message to his players during a game is more important than winning it? Carter and Richards at half speed are still more of an offensive threat than our 4th line. In any case, I didn’t see Eichards and Carter performing so outrageously that they needed a “message.” Sutter spends too much time sending messages and not thinking creatively. He didn’t coach the team to the Cup. He won the lottery when the players became self-inspired and bailed him out when his approach sputtered at the end of the regular season.

The same way that most fans of other teams view the KINGS?
I have a feeling that other successful coaches have used
these same tactics effectively in the past.
Probably a couple you mentioned earlier.
You seem fixated on having it both ways.
In other words, you demand a perfect coach for a perfect team.
Sorry, that is not happening here..or anywhere

@Russ Dynda, I see Sutter failing to get the full potential out of this team. We saw it during the playoffs. Now we’re back to mediocrity because he’s just like all the rest of them. I ask a simple question. Why play the 4th line when you’re down two goals late. But all I hear here is defense of Sutter, even when his decisions defy common sense. This team truly has the chance to be a great team, IF the coach becomes a maestro rather than ruthless, rigid master.

@lakingbob(chi), Some fan bases are full of whine, like Detroit. Either way, there’s going to be lots of whining following today’s game. I’m not a fan of Detroit, but I do want to see Chicago lose in regulation. They’re riding an unbelievably hot lucky streak right now and I’d like to see it end. Why? I don’t know. Guess I’m a terrible person.

@soo-do-nihm, At this point I want the Hawks to win every game except the ones against us.. and win in regulation. No point wishing their streak broken and giving points to any team we might be battling with for a playoff spot at the end.

@bbb7, Good point
Way off topic but on NHL plays of the week, for the best hits, Doughty’s hit on Datsyuk from across the ice made #1! I’m excited because normally Kings get no love on this show or NHL Tonight.
Hurray for Doughty! He needs to keep hitting like that.

@soo-do-nihm,
It was only because Datsyuk was involved and bravely recovered to help lead his comrades in their valiant strugglr against the bourgeoise capitalist pigs Kings who were trying to murder everyone on the ice in order to exploit their desire for more power and wealth by obtaining the Cup and establishing themsleves as a upper class over the poor proletariats in Detroit.
Or, it could just have been that it was an awesome hit by DD.

@DesertKing,
Doughty destroyed him, knocked Datsyuk so hard he was offsides on his next shift

@DesertKing, I think it’s because of the capitalist pigs thing. I can’t decide if I like Doughty’s hit on Datsyuk or Beauchemin better. Both were beautiful, awesome hits.

Not the best night for the Kings on Saturday to say the least. But, compared to how they looked in their losses during the first three weeks of the season… well, there’s no comparison.
I like how this team is playing. Losses will come. So will wins. I figure a 3 to 5 seed in the playoffs and a strong run for the cup.

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com),
Yes, concerned.
I want to see JB get six or seven of the next ten starts. I believe that Quickie is gripping it a bit hard.
He needs a little more rest.

I don’t remember whose comment it was last night and am too lazy to look back but he basically questioned about the knowledge of this fan base because nobody mentioned Brown and Richerds with their poor performance. I thought I would reply but didn’t because I felt like I’m wasting my time. It has nothing to do with the knowledge. I actually half wrote names including those two about their performance, and then I realized the list would be too long. To me, nobody played A game last night including Williams and Norlan who scored only goals. Well … Nolan could be A but not solid. Kopitar and Ellerby were OK. Others … not making a quick decision. That’s why the Nucks jumped on them.
There are some very knowledgeable guys commenting on this blog. Their comments are worth reading, and I’d never miss them unless I’m not reading the blog itself. Other guys … it depends but I know whose comment I should read or not. It’s your choice to read but you should respect other’s opinion whether you like it or not. And if you label yourself knowledgeabe …well, that’s one thing. Good luck with that.
