Totally not impressed by Phil/Wash tonight. Sloppy play, forechecking is usually AWOL; Coach Sutter would throw a fit if his team played like either. The highlight: Ovechkin’s blind pass that went between his defensemen and out of Washington’s O-zone.

to further LA_1968′s comments above…please refrain from the same boring, repetitive posts about how much you hate the announcing team and that you wish that BOB and JIM were doing the game, etc…

like everyone on here, i prefer dos eq…sorry…i prefer them over everyone else…

    however,

    DEAL WITH IT…(!)

some of yoots cry anytime our beloved kings don’t get 1000 words of praise every minute of a broadcast…paaaaaaaaallllleeeeeaaaassseee….(!)

it’s as if you never watched another game, besides the kings games, in yr entire life…enough already…

all of these announcing teams are the same ones that espn had used previously…and all of them are respected around the league…sure, they might not get every pay right…sure, you might feel that they favor a player or a team from time-to-time that’s not the kings…and i’m totally aware of all the other arguments that peeps have made over the years, etc…

but it’s time to realize that not everybody can’t be as talented as BOB and JIM…and…NICK and DARYL…they aren’t as bad as many of you think…

be thankful…for what we got…and respect what we don’t…(!)

  148. Ron Reynolds says:

Well… We began turning it around over the course of the last 5 minutes, but other than JB playing a terrific 1st period, we didn’t do any of the things I felt were necessary. To wit: We didn’t stay out of the penalty box. We were dominated in the neutral zone. We back-checked poorly. We were out of position too many times. We’re still in this game courtesy of Jonathan Bernier.

We’ll need to turn things around with respect to puck possession. Which will necessitate finding our legs. Detroit’s a solid skating team, and we’re not exactly known as speed burners, but we’ve got to find our legs…and I believe we will.

I think the first 5 minutes of the second period will foreshadow the remainder of the contest.

Jimmy Howard has played quite a few dominating games against the Kings over the last few years. Frustrating and inexplicable that the Kings don’t seem to be interested in their A game tonight. Stupid penalties in the first handed the Wings the driver’s seat, but even so, Detroit’s 1 goal was about as flukey of an ugly goal as you’ve seen in a while. If Quick had started would the score be 0-0? It just feels like an autopilot loss is bearing down on LA. Somebody in a crown shirt prove me wrong. Scuderi has looked like he’s sleepwalking. Richards looks like much ado about nothing (have you notice the size of his paychecks?!). Somebody’s got to make up for their teammates’ ineptitude. Somebody. It’s doable. Somebody . . .

Need to watch the DVR, but it looks like a familiar story for the first 50 minutes – Wings moving much better than Kings without the puck, both supporting the puck carrier when they have it and getting in passing lanes when Kings do. That’s a theme in our games with them. DS jumbling up the lines sends a message to the players to stop waiting for your teammate to do something and get your GD feet moving.

I’ll now watch and test my hypothesis.

    [Reply]

    Shakes Reply:

    @Kenny44,

for the record i think the combo of powerplays and regular play by the Wings had them soundly winning the first 15 minutes. their goal was a bit of a fluke, but being up 1-0 did properly represent what was going on in the game.

The next 15-20 minutes was a draw, but the Kings started evening things out, but the let down on the 5 on 3 was a bit of a buzz kill.

The final stanza started off with a bit more of an edge to the Kings, in terms of the Wings not really having a ton of sustained pressure, but the last 10 minutes was great

@Kenny44, It looked to me in the first period and a half that they had real happy feet and tried to clear the zone before the puck even got to them, and a few of them were gripping the sticks so hard I could smell carbon coming out of my speakers. It really looked like they were in trouble from the start but I think they were so jazzed that their adrenaline was at 200mph and had to slow down before they started to play like SC Champs.

  548. Ron Reynolds says:

And that, ladies and gentleman, was a textbook example of why no team is going to want to face the Stanley Cup champions.

The Kings were completely dominated for the first 15 minutes of the 1st period. We couldn’t get our feet moving. We were consistently beaten to the puck. The neutral zone belonged to the Wings. We were running around in our own zone, chasing down the puck for most of the first half of the period.

An then, in the waning minutes of the opening period, we began to find our game. The second period was a standoff, albeit one in which puck possession was essentially a draw – penalties notwithstanding. In fact, the penalties almost seemed to get in the way of our physical play along the boards – the game that wears down the opposition.

The third period was vintage. There came a point when Detroit had nothing left. A harmless play along the half-boards turns into a brilliant pass to the most dangerous puck handler on the championship team, skating all by his lonesome to the front of the net. Two seconds later, it was over.

We have the youth, the size, the skills and the discipline to simply beat other teams into submission over the course of 60 minutes. But, of course, we’d be nothing absent our defense. And tonight, Jonathan Bernier saved our collective butts. Does any other team have a better tandem in the nets?

Six goals allowed over the course of the 5-game winning streak. Gotta’ love it!

@Al Michaels, Randy Hahn has been an outstanding play-by-play guy since long before his stint as the Kings’ ‘sideline jockey.’ he’s done play-by-play at all levels of soccer and hockey for decades. he’s a lot more knowledgeable (about both soccer and hockey) than 99% of guys doing that job. as a broadcaster, Hahn is a pro’s pro. evenhanded and honest. the way some Kings fans have hated on him in the past is just embarrassing. Remenda’s a solid pro as well. former coach, knows hockey, good analyst, and although it may not have been evident during that particular broadcast, he’s got a cool sense of humor and can bring more real ‘color’ than most color guys. hate the Sharks if you must, but they’ve got unusually good broadcasters.
