February 27 postgame quotes: Jonathan Bernier

On finishing the game with a good feeling after an early ugly goal against:
“Yeah, that was a fluke one, you know? I’m not even sure where it hit me. Probably my back or my head or something. But we stuck with it. We scored that big first one. We knew if we scored one, we’d have a pretty good chance to win that game, and we did.”

On the slow start to the game:
“Well, they had a few power plays, and I think it got them going a little bit. But PK was big tonight. We scored that big power play goal, and that’s the league. If you’re good on special teams, most of the night you’re going to come out with two points.”

On his view of Kopitar’s goal from across the ice:
“It’s going to be ESPN highlight for sure. That was a great pass by Kinger, and way to finish by Kopi.”

On the team getting comfortable later in the game:
“We were playing on our heels a little bit, and after that I thought we started chipping pucks, getting those pucks deep. That’s our game. When we cycle the puck and we play down low, we’re a very successful team, and I think that’s what happened in the second.”

    @DesertKing, Tonite was his coming out party. On National TV, he really came up big and showed the hockey world why the Kings have one of the best if not THE best goalie tandem in the league. It’s the best possible situation for the Kings right now in goal. The competition between Bernier and Quick will bring out the best in them, I feel. And they are great compliments to each other: Quick is athletic but all over the place, while Bernier is technically sound and cool as a cucumber. They’ve really been great to watch this season.

    He was like wall on a night where the Kings got outplayed for most of the game.

    GO KINGS GO!

    Fluke goals happen and its all about how you respond to it. Remember the goal Quick gave up vs. Phoenix from the red line in Game 3 last year? Bernier shook off the goal and was awesome for the rest of the game.

    LT21 Reply:

    @phil, Well he had a few scary fumbles in the 2nd that made me think the goal was still in his head but he came through.

    @LT21,

    True, but not as scary how many times JQ completely left the net against the ducks.

    Like 3 or 4?

    No diss on JQ at all. But folks need to put things in perspective, in a non-craig button kind of way..

    LT21 Reply:

    @jess, Oh I agree that scares the BeJeezus out of me. The way I see it is that JB is our cool, calm and collected goalie. So when he makes those fumbles and rebounds it scares me because he doesn’t have the same athleticism to make the diving second saves. I think Bernier is a great goalie but it just gets annoying how Quick has been getting better and more up to the “Quick” we are used to and one good performance by JB and people are saying to trade Quick. Come on people.

    @LT21, i think the Wings saw that first one and started shooting high whenever they could. Anything low, he was square, didn’t seem to let to much bounce of him, covered up quick. Up high, it was an adventure. Bet Datsuyk was just waiting to try that little (7 ft high) flip from behind the goal into the crease, knowing it would create havoc between JB and defense.

    @Michael J., When you’re fully on board, let me know, we’ll go to a game together!

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

    @Michael J., I was at the game and thru 3/4 of the game, it just didn’t look good. The Kings got bad bounces, lost all the battles along the boards, couldn’t complete passes and seemed to whiff on what must have been at least 50 passes or shots. But somehow, they used what few chances they had in the third to cash in.

    A great feeling to ‘steal’ the win! But I’m a bad winner, and I was really hoping the King would smoke Detroit to shut up all the Redwing fans in attendance, the most of any opposing team I’ve seen in a while at The Stapler…

    Anyway, a win is a win is a win. GO KINGS GO!

    @jess, Yup. Bernier was fighting the puck, and other than the bad goal managed to do very well (sounds backhanded, but it’s not. If he’d kept that out, he’d have deserved the shutout.) I was thinking if he could hold it together the Kings were going to wear them down, just like all the others, and they did.

    @puckhandler, It was a bad goal. You can’t ignore it. It was going wide, he reached out for it and bumbled it. I do agree, though, that even if he was shaky, he would have deserved the shutout if he hadn’t given up the bad goal. He mostly stood on his head even though he fought the puck.

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,

    Probably not until the summer for a number of reasons:

    1. The March schedule is beyond brutal = expect injuries. Quick will need to rest for 2nd leg of the back-to-backs (I think four of them in March). There is no one else in the system to step in. Imagine the Kings going into playoffs without JQ or JB. OUCH!!!

    2. We have cap space THIS season but not next. Would you trade him for a rental whom you cannot afford to bring back next year?

    3. He is an RFA, so don’t worry about him refusing to re-sign. Worst case scenario is getting a lower return if he goes O’Reilly on us.

    @mask0425x,

    And who is to say that Bernier won’t re-consider if given the right offer to stay here. He appears to be getting not only playing time but also success. 4-0? Hideeho.

    There is something to be said about staying put here and I think DS sees that light too.

    @Scott, Being a month ’til trading deadline, many of us looked to this as the point we’d have to accept that he’ll be worth more in trade than in trying to resign. He’s too good to keep. THAT is why this is the time for the trade. Berns is great–it’ll hurt to lose him.

    [Reply]

    JOHN SHAW Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, We also can resign him BIG,and keep him till the draft to trade BIG fish in…GKG…

    [Reply]

    LT21 Reply:

    @Scott, Oh gosh that would be terrible. I think Ovi is much too selfish. Bernier is too valuable right now to put him up for a trade. Give Quick a few more good games under him and then DL will bait Bernier just to see what is on the table. I don’t think it would be in the best interest to trade him before April though. Too compact of a schedule on March and I think Quick has been having back issues lately. Missing appearances to go to “therapy” sessions isn’t normal for him.

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

    @LT21, As we have no back up goalie, I thought many were agreed that it’s not wise to trade him. I’m confused now. Yeah his stock is probably more valuable as a trade, but maybe not. No one seems to be really hurting for a goalie and I’d love it if JB stayed in the Western conference and went to a team with any halfway decent defense. It’d suck to see him go back East and then have to handle the net on his own (though he might be used to it from our guys seeing as how it’s only been this season they really stepped up well in front of him)

    Was sitting behind Bernie tonight. He had maybe a few times where he looked out of play but for the most part, I don’t think the Horrid Things actually got too many decent shots on goal. (But I was too busy screaming over literally half the Staples Center to really notice how the Kings were doing on defense).

    Seems our D actually stepped up tonight and helped out our goalie.

    The one goal that Detroit actually did “score” came because freakin’ Voynov made a rookie move trying to bat it out of the air and he got in Bernie’s way who then proceeded to lose his balance and flop the puck backwards into the net (it would’ve probably bounced off his back anyways if he hadn’t been able to control the rebound). HOWEVER, that said, VV redeemed himself and played well in all other areas tonight.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @Robyn, Can’t expect a lot more out of your backup. He’ll probably get a few games in before the inevitable trade happens.

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Don’t think he’ll get traded this season. He played extremely well and kept the Kings in the game. There were a lot of good scoring chances by the Red Wings but Bernie never took his eyes off the puck and came up with some great saves.

    I’ll give you an example: late in the 3rd, RW had a mini-breakaway of sorts and the guy shot it, but Cool Bernie deflected the rebound out with his stick.

    I wonder if he’ll try to walk this summer. Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @Robyn, I didn’t say he sucked. He would have deserved a shutout if he didn’t put the puck in his own net when it was going wide. It is what it is.

  17. Kings x says:

    Question: if you’re a GM and you have two solid goaltenders of the same age. Does quick athletic an possibly injury prone style factor in to whether you might want JB long term because of his efficiency of motion? Or is that just a silly thought?

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

    @Kings x, Well I think Quickie is flexible enough to handle his own style of playing (given that he’s been playing that way for years). You will always need a backup goaltender for occasions like tonight when one needs to rest or like in March where the schedule is going to BLOW hard (4 solid weeks of straight back-to-backs on Monday and Tuesday, plus a game every other or every 2 days).

    JB has proven himself to be very good at what he does but he can’t play #2 for ever, he’s much too good for that. If you’re a GM, you have a nice problem on your hands that would be enviable for most GMs.

    [Reply]

    KingMe20 Reply:

    @Kings x,

    I don’t think it’s silly at all. I may be in the minority on this, but I don’t see any good reason to trade Bernier right now. First, neither Zatkoff nor Jones have proven that they are ready, which means that part of what you need in the trade is a backup goalie, and I can’t name a backup I would want more than Bernier.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

    @KingMe20, Unfortunately, Zatkoff signed with Pittsburgh in the off-season and is no longer Kings property. I think the depth chart now reads: Marty Jones/J.F. Berube/Chris Gibson. Zatkoff looked good, but he got tired of being buried behind the goalie depth of the franchise and signed with the Pens. I think they should try to hold on to both as long as they can. No rush and nothing should be done this season.

    [Reply]

    mash-ola Reply:

    @mash-ola, But if I HAD to trade a goalie, I’d strongly look to moving Bernier, or maybe even Quick, to Los Angeles East (The Flyers) for one of their elite young forwards like Brayden Schenn or Wayne Simmonds (who says you can’t go home again?). Sean Couturier, Jakob Voracek, Matt Read, Ty McGinn or Zac Rinaldo.

    Stranger thing have happened, right?

    LT21 Reply:

    @Kings x, It’s not a silly thought. In an ideal world it would be nice to have them both. But both guys want to be #1 and with the style Sutter normally plays and what the LA market has grown accustom to, there will not be any St. Louis style tandem happening here outside of a shortened season. Bernier has been doing well and deserves to be a #1 somewhere but if I had to choose who I would want as our #1 it is Quick, for sure. You don’t become the Conn Smythe winner on a fluke. He has the talent and capabilities and has earned his spot. His game has stepped up tremendously since the start of the season. He will be in full Quick-mode in no time. I agree we need a decent backup to replace Bernier and that he should not go anywhere this season. And as far as possible injuries to either goaltender, yes Quick’s style is more athletic and looks like he could pull a groin on any given night, injuries can happen to anyone at any time. Any goaltender can get injured just from getting rammed by an aggressive forward. So you never know.
