Darryl Sutter spoke with the media following Monday’s morning skate before sharing his thoughts on the NHL’s proposed realignment, which will be covered in a separate post this afternoon.
On whether he saw Anaheim’s game versus Colorado:
“Every second.”
On his thoughts of Anaheim:
“Good team. Not just their performance, their season performance to date. They have outstanding goaltending, good performances on a nightly basis out of their big players. They’re experienced on the back end, and we’ve got to try and stick with them tonight.”
On what he would like from L.A.’s forwards in a match-up where there’s size on both sides:
“Play better than they did against them last time. Getzlaf, Perry; Kopitar, Carter. Go down the list. Lots of good match-ups. They’re fun match-ups.”
On Viktor Fasth:
“Experienced goalie. He doesn’t give up bad goals. He’s not a kid. He’s a big guy that controls rebounds. [He's] 30 years old. He’s got international experience. Good goalie.”
On if Fasth’s style is similar to Henrik Lundqvist’s:
“I don’t see Lundqvist enough. I see Fasth more than I see Lundqvist.”
On Trevor Lewis’ recent performance:
“When Lewis’s on his game, he’s using his speed on the forecheck. He’s strong on the walls. He’s a sound defensive guy. Hey, he cares. He cares about how he plays. One of the things I learned last year when he came here, there were a lot of critical opinions of Lewie. But I had a different view of him. I liked those things in his game, those parts of his games about the compete part of it, so it’s a matter of getting some offense out of him, right? Because if he wants to play those minutes…if he’s a teen-minute player, he has to be more than a penalty killer. We need some production, as we saw last spring, out of him, and right now we’re getting that.”
I think his comments on Lewie is probably the longest speech I’ve ever read/heard from him LOL

“Every second”? How could he stand Hayturd that long? Oh yeah, I forgot, DS owns and works a farm so he is used to a lot of BS.

“Lot of critical opinions of Lewie”….. The fact that TM benched him???? One of the best changes DS did was give Lewis more TOI. plus put him in a position to succeed !!!

“…good performances on a nightly basis out of their big players. … ” DS is so sneaky with his comments. Always got a zinger here and there.

It’s a different role for Lewie for sure. Will he be able to maintain his strong and forecheck while adding the offensive side to his game on a consistent basis? I love that he’s not hesitating when shooting. He gets the puck off his stick way faster than previous years and his head is up while he’s doing it. A good sign for sure. If he keeps doing what Carter was saying in the last thread, getting those pucks to the net, then he can easily start racking up those points. But again, will his defense suffer for it?

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), he did say he has to adjust his defense now that Sutter is playing him on LW. He hasn’t had much time to practice so guess, as always, it’s a “wait and see” game with him and the rest of the Kings

@Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com), so true. Lewie is all over the ice. He works so friggin hard it will be difficult fr him to pick uo the O while maintaining the D.

@KC23, gah I really wish NHL would make their site mobile friendly! I don’t have access through my work computer and I really don’t feel like looking stuff up when I get home!

Yes Lewie is a good forechecker and could score some goals, but like I said that kind of a player belongs on the third or fourth line. It doesn’t seem that his percentage in finishing a play with a goal is high at all. He seems to be getting rewarded with lucky goals.
I still think it’s to the Kings best interest to get Gagne going therefor needs to be in the line-up regularly. The fact that he’s a known goal scorer puts more pressure on the opposition defense man. I can’t see Lewie or Cliffy scoring in bunches, and frankly I don’t think they’re part of the equation when the opposition has to worry about a “sniper.” They play with heart and hard work but even then, they won’t and haven’t scored all that much. We need more “known” snipers in the line-up. Let’s get Gagne going!!!!

@ItsAKingThing, Ah…you must’ve the early part of last season when he was averaging a goal every other game, including that high lobbed Kopit fed to him on the right wing and waited and waited and slipped the puck past the goalie.

@ItsAKingThing, We still need more “threats” other then just 2 or 3 players.

@rogiesbackup,
DS has been searching a complementary players to get our tope guys going for a long time. And Lewis perfectly fits that role on the 2nd line. To be honest, I never thought of Lewis fits that role but like DS said ‘hell with it’ and good thing happened.
As off-wing role, Lewis now has better vision of the ice because he always stays open to the middle. And by using his speed, he can rush in to the offensive zone and establish the a position to make plays.
I’m not yet sure about his production but in last 2 games, he started to show some soft hands which … hugely lack in the past I must say. He doesn’t have to be a goal scorer in that line but that kind of role maybe makes him relax a little bit, and he might end up with scoring more goals than ever.

@rogiesbackup, he doesn’t like to et his hands dirty now after the injury. We now have another Frolov on our hands. Wish it twasn’t so….

I’m will be watching DS closely tonight.
For what…..panic moves, frustration and quick to pull the trigger.
All of these types of moves will not instill long term confidence in players or line combinations.
Players have to be able to play with errors at times, its part of the game and part of their growth especially with youthful players.

Tonight the Kings start playing “playoff bound” teams. It will be interesting to see the next four games: Ducks, Red Wings, Canucks and Preds. I see the Kings being more solid as a team, but not flashy. And that’s OK. GKG!
