Loved seeing Brownie go out there and hitting bodies again. Thought the defense stepped up really well. The one goal came from a bad situation (4 on 3, I mean if you can’t score there, then you really must suck or you’re facing the best goalie in the world).

Kings played so well tonight. Loved it. Now it’s time to roast some Duck on Monday…

@Forum Gold, interesting because when I checked the Kings’ NHL website, the game is listed as 7:30. Some comments on the board were that Bob was having an “off” night, maybe they made a mistake? The TV schedule says 7:30…

@soo-do-nihm, I know huh? Wonder if a 4-on-3 is actually a higher percentage average than 5-on-3, because it sure seems like it.

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,
The radio announcers were saying it’s more dangerous cause of all the extra space on the ice, and the offence feels less of a need to pass and is more likely to take shots.

@Wilmonde, So, it makes you wonder who’s the first team you’ll see put four players on the ice for a 5-on-3…

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Wilmonde, What’d be REALLY interesting about that is how they could confuse teams when changing penalty killers from a four-man squad to a five-man squad….it’d drive assistant coaches nuts!

    Robyn Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, You know, it’s interesting, it seems that 4-on-3 is a lot tougher than 5-on-3 as I’ve seen the Kings kill that penalty before. Hmm, I wonder why…

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Robyn, 4-on-3 seems to be such a high-percentage situation, and it’s like a 4-on-4 with the advantage, as Wilmonde was saying the radio guys said there’s a lot of room on the ice. Almost makes you wonder if the 5-on-3 could be structured like a 4-on-3 with a guy playing like a “safety” or something–more so than at the point.

    Robert R Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, On Kings Talk, I stated the contention that 4 on 3 is more dangerous than 5 on 4, and neither Nick or Daryl disagreed.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Robert R, It SEEMS more dangerous than 5-on-3. I don’t have stats to back that up, though.

    Robert R Reply:

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, For a 5 on 3, I’d put one man in the very low slot. That forces the defenders to collapse in, giving room to the point men to move in closer and tee it up.

Speaking of that–pass this KINGS trivia question on to the night crew.

What KINGS player scored half of his career goals via the penalty shot.

Hint: The penalty shot was considered “shorthanded” because it he was taken down on a breakaway while the KINGS were killing a penalty.

Bonus question–Name the goalie he scored it against.

Hint:The goalie was playing for a team that came into the NHL at the same time as the KINGS

    [Reply]

@trytodethroneus, Not sure what the answer is but sounds like its either:

    3) Someone who just had a “cup of coffee” with the team.

Seeing a game live always birngs a different persepctive on things. Here are some observations following today’s game:

    1) Lots more hitting. Avs were barely able to get into any rythym
    2) Carter is incredible. Faster than he looks on TV, bigger too in that he doesn’t have to hit opponents, he just out-speeds and out-muscles them. He moves so well without the puck that you never know where he is until you see that snap shot comes flying out of nowhere and into the net.
    3) Overall team passing is greatly improved. Very crisp, on target and creative
    4) Lewis is out of control. He is going all out and no one can stop him. I think he took my advice about hanging out with Carter to learn how to finish
    5) Quick is back
    6) Team chemistry is gelling. The 11-23-14 line looked the best they have all season and te 10-22-77 was on the same page all night
    7) The 1 powerplay we had was awesome. Lots of movement and most of it towards the net
    8) Got a free Mcflurry and Lappy puck
    9) Crowd sucked. Have of them didn’t know the Kings goal song, couldnt stay in their seats more than 5 minutes, or when to cheer and when not to. It was rather embarassing. Freakin’ bandwaggoners.

The team looked real good today. They came out ready to play today.

@DesertKing, Next time you’re at a game and you need someone to cheer with, I’ll be happy to scream loud enough so the whole damn building can hear me cheer from sec. 107 (row 12) :)

I had a different vantage point so I noticed some different things:

    1) The defense is a lot better than they look on TV. It’s hard to tell, but tonight they were covering the puck well, digging it out and clearing it out of their zone very well.
    2) Carter is damn hard to track on the ice and his wrister is so amazing, that it’s hard to track until the puck literally sling shots out of the net (at least when he scores on the other end of the ice as I’m right behind the home goalie)
    3) Our goalies are 10x more amazing than they look on TV. They’re somehow able to track pucks and make excellent saves through lots of traffic
    4) Over the last few games, I’ve noticed that the Kings score best in the second period on a breakaway as it seems to catch the other teams by surprise
    5) While watching a game in person is extremely exciting, there’s something missing without being able to listen to Bob and Jim
    6) The guys seemed to come out extremely focused tonight
    7) As you mentioned, day game crowds suck

    Forum Gold Reply:

@DesertKing, Enjoyed reading your post. It seems that as the 11-23-14 line goes, so do the Kings. Much higher compete level from everyone. Day game crowds just seem less into the game and it seems to rub off onto our team. I think Lappy had a lot to due with our quick start today. Up until last week I thought our lack of passing ability was why we were doing so poorly. Big 2 games next week and I am looking for a playoff type atmosphere for both. GO KINGS GO!!!

Just took a good look at the schedule, and March is going to make or break their regular season. There are three weeks in March they’ll play four games each week, and in each of those weeks, they’ll have games back-to-back Monday and Tuesday. They’ll have another Saturday-Sunday back-to-back. So, Bernier will probably get plenty of starts–at least I hope he plays in those. I guess part of being on the road all this time has been playing to others’ schedules, and now they’ll be making up for lost time at home. Let’s hope they “stay hot” through March. That was a vintage (and by vintage I mean May, 2012) Kings performance – aggressive forecheck, finesse cycling, guys finding open spots and linemates finding them when they got open, and of course Quick making the big saves when called upon. I had said after the Detroit game how deja vu similar the situation was to the Detroit game last season that the boys blew in the final minutes and how this one would turn the season around as that one did… and it has.

The Kings has now allowed a mere eight goals in their past six games and the tempo control has returned. And what a treat seeing guys shoot off the pass instead of trying to maneuver for a better shot and getting it blocked.

Now just keep the pressure on the Ducks and knock them down a peg – they seem to think they’re ‘elite’ now they’ve won a dozen games to start the season. Let’s launch them on a losing streak on Monday.

@bbb7, I read some comments earlier that either the Kings start playing well in the 3rd week of Feb or you’re right about the Detroit game. Either way, I hope the Kings definitely take the Ducks down a peg, especially after they schooled us last time we saw them in the “Freeway Faceoff.”

One thing I noticed tonight is that the Kings were extremely poised and in control. There were 2 really good opportunities for the Avs and they were only able to capitalize on 1 because Scuds the Stud was there to save Quick’s bacon by fishing the puck out of the crease and clearing it before the Avs got a second chance on it. The forechecking and the backchecking were also superior to the Avs by far. Avs didn’t stand a chance tonight.

If they bring this game to Staples on Monday, Ducks are going DOWN.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Robyn, The Kings need to play THEIR game on Monday. Everybody backcheck, clog up the neutral zone, play the game in the Ducks zone as much as possible and when that doesn’t happen keep traffic out of the front of Quick’s net. If they do those things we will be fine. If we get impatient and / or trade end to end rushes against the Quack Quacks the outcome isn’t going to be pretty.

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Exactly. Tonight they were able to do so well against the Avs because the Kings were playing THEIR game and not letting the Avs’ speed dictate the pace of the game. As long as they don’t do what they did before (which is trade goals every time someone goes to the sin bin), then they’ll be golden. Their confidence has got to be so high right now – oh but if you ask Stoll, he’ll give you a speech about how confidence is a tricky thing so maybe they aren’t that confident ;)

Great game today, listening on the radio gives you such a different perspective than actually watching the game.

The crowd, to me, sounded just as loud as usual, but I do remember the place being rather tame the one time I attended a day game. That was about 7-9 years ago, though, so I’m sure it wasn’t a sellout, being that they were still rebuilding, and I think Andy Murray was still the coach.

Couldn’t really tell if Doughty had a good game or not, the only time I can remember him being talked about specifically was when he made a pass instead of a shot (forget what period) and the radio guys sounded disappointed. I was kind of hoping the vintage jerseys would wake him up. Remember that hit last year on Hall in the vintage jerseys. Brutal. =D

Carter sounded ridiculously dangerous today, and has for most of the season. Richards seemed kind of quiet, but I guess when you’re setting up great plays it doesn’t translate to radio as well. I do feel like Carter is carrying the team along with him right now, though, and from watching the highlight reels on NHL.com, it looks like he’s enjoying it.

I don’t really have anything too awesome to say about Lappy, as I don’t remember too much about him playing with us (Didn’t pay too much attention to individual players as a kid), but he seemed like a really genuine, Dustin Penner type personality from all the Royal Half videos, and from what the radio guys were saying, he gave it his all every game, and for that, I can say he’s awesome.

Let’s go tear up the Ducks on Monday and show the Pacific Division and the Western Conference exactly what a Stanley Cup Champion team can do.

    Go Kings Go!

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

@Wilmonde, Doughty was the “invisible defenseman” but in a good way. No, he didn’t make any spectacular, stand out plays today (that wind up shot has GOT to go, though!), but he did really well covering the puck in his zone, had really crisp passes, etc. Really, all the defensemen did well today – even Muzzin and Drewiske (though they made a few glaring errors, but then again who hasn’t this season).

I think the radio guys were disappointed because Doughty had a shot (not a really good one), did his big wind up, then gently passed it to someone else (I think Carter but I don’t remember).

All in all, everyone had a good game. Jeff “en fuego” Carter (as so named by Penner) was, of course, the star of the game with another nifty wrister that is giving goalies absolute hell this season. Kopi, Brownie and Lewie all put one in the net. So our “top” lines finally made an appearance tonight. And Quick looked like his old self back in the net today. So all around superb effort on the Kings’ behalf this afternoon.

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Wilmonde,

Doughty was hammering the Avs everywhere on the ice, throwing some big hip checks and separating players from the puck. On the non-shot, I think he did the big wind up hoping to draw someone to him. It was pretty obvious that he intended to pass and never intended to shoot.

Kings r 3-0 on what I thought could b a 7-2-2 streak. Of course the first 3 were not the toughesg part based on opponents record’s but no trip through Canada, esp with a back to back is easy. These next six r much tougher but the way the whole team played, esp Quick (I think he’ll start 5 of the six) it’s a good possibility..

    [Reply]

    soo-do-nihm Reply:

@linny, Simply based on the schedule, I think the goalies will probably be splitting the long home stretch. Guess we’ll see. This isn’t baseball.

    linny Reply:

@soo-do-nihm, it may not b baseball in a literal sense but take a look at what Orel Hershiser did in 1988. In conference finals he started 3 n pitched relief in another. Then in the World Series he started 2 more, pitching in 6 of last 12 games, n had 2 or 3 shutouts. The Guy was playing out of his mind mind so they used him as much as humanly possible.
I think Quick is really close to being the dominant goalie, n “SMYTHE” winner we saw last year. If so I think he’ll play as much ad DS originally intended…which based on one quote in particular was “every game’ (paraphrased). I really don’t think he was serious but he implied, most of em, at the very least.

Everyone was on fire today, Muzz was the only one I slapped my face watching. He cost us one goal, but in the end wast that bad, hopefully he can take it as a serious learning experience.

I imagine DS wil be working on scramble drills in front of the net now.

A full 60, for and back checking game is key to winning.
More importantly Brown hitting = wins!

The team must maintain this ferocity, hunger and desire to continue winning.

I cannot wait for Monday now.

@Mars, That slashing penalty seemed if-y to me, but it is what it is. Isn’t this also the second game where Muzzin’s actions led to a goal? Oh well. He vastly improved over the first period throughout the game, though. He didn’t seem quite as timid and scared of the puck.

But you’re so right: Cap’n Crunch Brownie = games won.

Wish I could go to Monday’s game but alas, I’ll be obsessing with everyone else who isn’t going. Monday will be good., It’s time for revenge against the teams that beat us earlier in the season (of course with the exception of Chicago, but a win wasn’t going to come easily against the #1 team in the league).

Let’s be honest. Colorado played a bad game. Penner had way to easy of a time to make that pass to Kopi. Richards looked like he was in warmups gathering pucks before sliding it over to Carter for that goal. Bad goal by goalie.

I think the players know that was sorta a gimmie game and to not expect that against the Ducks.

    soo-do-nihm Reply:

@LA_1968, True, BUT the Kings played very efficiently tonight as Foxy pointed out. They were solid, cohesive and confident. They could easily have let Colorado’s subpar game dictate a subpar game for them (as happened with Columbus) but they didn’t. So yes, Colorado played badly. Yes, Calgary played badly. Yes, Oilers played a mediocre game. No, none of these teams should scare the Kings but that’s not the point. The point is that they looked good tonight.

In the first period, Colorado was there but when you score in the first minute of the game, your opponent’s balloon just deflates (we know from experience, sadly…) and they just mentally checked out after the first period (even with their goal early in the 2nd)

perhaps the thing that shocks me most is dustin brown …………. always valuable as a hitter and intimidator perfect for a long playoff series … but the kings , of course could never make the playoofs to take advantage of that kind of play until recently ………. as far as his offensive ability – he was always a guy who could pick up garbage , score on the occassional wrister and do things like that – pretty average offensive skills ………. and as many would say (myself included) pretty below average actually

but however , i must say …… ever since the trade deadline last year , i have absoulutely what has happened to the old dustin brown ……… the one who would continually bobble and fumble passes , fan one timers , and just display some of the worst hands in the league . which is why he was below average in my mind as a scoring forward

but ever since the trade deadline this guy is the most improved player in the national hockey league ………. all of a sudden now he catches passes cleanly , shoots off the pass effortlessly , and has actually turned himself into a very good offensive player

i dont know if after the trade rumors last year at the deadline it sparked him to work after hours on his pass recieving and one timing ……. because i do not know if i have ever seen improvement like this in my 33 years of watching hockey ……. its like night and day ……….. totally different player ……….. and now combining that with his playoff intimdation hitting style , this guy is actually turning himself into one of the better players in the league

i dont know what u did dustin , but kudos to you …. keep up the good work

It’s true he was affected by trade rumor but if you’ve been following his progress closely, you should see he’s taking care of things one at a time. Each year, he gains an asset to his skill and is getting better and better. Most recently, he found the play-making skill that benefit his line mates as well. Maybe not a quick learner or born to be a superstar but he has all the ingredients to be the one. It’s fun to see he is now becoming a captain America and someday maybe a superstar.

    linny Reply:

@phil sykes, WRONG Phil…just flat out wrong. Your “opinion” is not an opinion when it is refuted by f a c t s! Using basic math I ran the totals for goals by year. Brown was just below (by 1 or 2 goals) the average his first 2 years on the Kings 2005/6. Since then he is above average or well above average every year. I’m sure it will b the same for assists n total points. These r called ‘statistics’. You cannot simply claim that EVERYTHING you state as ” your opinion” cannot be refuted. e.g.: you cannot state that in your opinion the earth is flat or that the sun revolves around the earth because something most of us know as “science”, has proven otherwise. So if you continue to claim it is still your opinion on this specific issue, it becomes meaningless and a specious argument, simply for the sake of argument. Later on I will also explain to u why your claim that an opposing player who moved Quicks goalie stick away, didn’t necessarily deserve a penalty because its up to the ref’s “judgement”. That one is also factually incorrect.

@phil sykes, His first preseason home game as an 18 year old he scored a hat trick. I don’t know how long you have watched Brown or if you only choose to remember the bad, but he was fairly skilled from the start and improved in one or two areas every year and now he is in his prime years as a fully developed hockey player. He scored 33 goals in 07-08 and 22 or more Goals and 29 or more assists every year since. I am sorry but even in the Offensive East a 50+ pt/yr player would never be considered average? I would suspect if you poled GMs over the last 5 years he would be in the top 60 forwards in the league 250+ hits, 20+G, 29+A, 50pts year only a rare few have averaged that type of output over 5 years. Has he improved and maybe gotten hot and found a way to turn it up in the playoff format? yes. Did he get hot with the rest of the team after the trade deadline minus the JJ+/- minus and add Voynov + +/- and Carter’s scoring and added scoring threat depth? yes. Should this be expected? Yes.

@tomb, Yeah, Schenn and Simmonds on top line with Giroux. Pretty amazing. I’ll take the cup(s). Richards is one of my favorite players. Simmonds was hot and cold in my book on the Kings. He’s better now in his constant net front role.

@tomb, Also please don’t overlook the fact he is playing in the East. Granted he is a very good player, but the softer play in that conference makes it easier to put up numbers. Oh, and we have that shiny thing and a banner in the rafters. Wish we could have kept him but I hardly think we got hosed in the transaction.

    @tomb, different team different system

    Our system = cup

Flyers system= lots of scoring and being scored on a lot.

How can anyone say we got hosed when that trade happened the year we won the cup?

…….crazy talk. Do you not remember 7 months ago?

@LA_1968, because u mistakenly said the word stuck ………. which made me think …. “”well then it cant be the goal im thinking of where he tied it late with the bank shot ….. cuz he said stuck and by the ear . as if it was the college play …….. so thats why i didnt say i immediately remembered the play because i thought u were talking about a different one ….. or now wasnt sure …. so i watched the video – and yeah , it was the play i was thinking of after all – nothing special about that bank shot play

    [Reply]

    LA_1968 Reply:

@phil sykes, FYI, I just wanted to bring up that goal. I didn’t mean to disagree with your post on DB’s improvement after the trade deadline. Not my intention. That goal was sweet. I hadn’t seen it in years. Not about the bank shot. It was quick, retrieve with back hand, forehand lift, roof. Tight quarters, goaling coming accross, time running out etc. I think you calling it “not special” is a mistake too. Hehe :-) Besides, 26 goals a season for 5 years doesn’t lend to having bad hands. Can we just agree to disagree then?

@LA_1968, yes , first of all . youve got frequency kenneth who has been a dustin brown apologist for years …. whenever i make a critque of him or anyone in this kings organization , the guy feels the need to jump down my throat – as if to say or imply that i am not a true kings fan or that my opinions are idiotic

first of all , they are opinions , and dosent seem to understand that concept

so back to u 1968 .. thank you for realizeing that my original post was meant as an extreme compliment to dustin brown …… something frequency fails to realize …. all he sees is the words “bad hands” or “below average” and he wants vengence – because how dare someone question anybody who has ever pulled on a kings sweater …. he fails to realize its my opinion …. but seems to think he can change my opinion – because after all , im way more intelligent than this guy phil sykes

so anyways 1968 …. yes we are great kings fans me and you , and we go way back obviously …….. and thats exactly how u disagree with someone – the way u just did

just say we agree to disagree and thats that ……… i think before the deadline his whole career he had bad hands – but you dont ………… and thats perfectly fine – agree to disagree

u thought the bank shot play was special – but i dont ….. and thats perfectly fine – agree to disagree

we both have our opinions and thats that – we drop it

but this frequency kenneth guy just dosent get it

and as far as judgement call on quicks stick … u let that play go and just let toronto handle the goal or no goal reviews – exactly the way it is set up now …… its obvious thats what my premise was ………….. if u and hockeynerd want to pick apart the whole point of my argument simply because i mistakenly or maybe not mistakenly used the word judgement , you shuld really do better things with your time ….. its obvious what my stance was on the whole thing so quit nitpicking

@PhilSykes…so Phil…after u read my comments above re: your opinion about Brown n the blown call by the ref re: the interference penalty that should have been called for moving JQ’s stick, please read the following:

As to your qsuestion about why I continue to post here after criticizing the site in general, (which by the way, I realize is a polite way of saying ‘if you don’t like it here u can leave’, please note…

I am still here because there r still some people around with whom one can engage in some great debate about many issues related to hockey, such as general strategy, pp n pk issues, thoughts about why certain players r under (or over) performing, line combo’s, etc…

Also there r several people still here who know quite a bit about the minor league affiliate and the king’s payroll. I generally don’t have much time to analyze the payroll situation so I defer to those who do n appreciate their work.

Finally I think I’d like to stick around in case someone, such as yourself, makes a statement about statistics being meaningless n uses that to state an “opinon” that Gretzky was only an average hockey player, I have the opportunity to tear that opinion into confetti using stats or anything else at my disposal. Furthermore, I and anybody else here, even u I surmise, use our time as we wish, not based on your “opinions”.

Finally, if for nothing else I like to stick around n c what people such as yourself r saying. Because if u really feel that stats r irrelevant, n use that comment to state “your opinion” that Gretzky was an ver-rated player

@KC23, I do not think, with the system we play now and the identity that the Kings have established as a big, bruising skilled, wear you down team, that Yellowhorn and Kozun will see much playing time in the show. I acknowledge that there are great skilled, small players who have done well and are doing well but I don’t think that is the identity of this team.

Pearson seems like a much better fit for this team ala King, Nolan.

@KingCharles of SaltLake, Ducks will be a good test. Clearly playing better than the Kings early on, but we’ll see. We will be able to hide Muzzin and DD2 a little better having last change. Muzzin, DD2 and Martinez were all brutal that game. Doughty and Scudes also didn’t look good. I’m expecting to see Quick in net.

The dux game was definitely a gimme to them.
Look at bonino’s night–4 pts that game. Talk about a fluke
He has 4 pts in the other 14 games they played.
He’s the only forward on the team that’s a minus (-5)

I believe that colorado will beat them tonight, because of all the extra space
and time they will have that the KINGS took away from them yesterday.

I didn’t read every post here, but did anybody else have no crowd or ice noise on NHL network for the first several minutes of the Avalanche game? It was awesome finally getting Bob & Jim on a national broadcast, even if it was NHL network. Regardless, for the first time this season the Kings looked like the playoff team of last year. Granted the Avalanche are struggling, but great momentum going in against the waterfowl. I loved the energy picking up losse pucks and the Kings seemed to have someone at the right place & time over and over. GKG!!!
