February 19 postgame quotes: Darryl Sutter

On whether this was the best Jonathan Quick has been early in a game:
“Well, he was really good in Chicago, also, in the first period. The big thing is rebound control and getting faceoffs. That’s the biggest part of the game that he had to work on – rebounds, too much quality opportunities against. Hopefully that’s a step in the right direction…a step forward for him is winning games, finding ways to win games. So it’s not just about Jonathan Quick. It’s about us all. We’ve got to work around it.”

On the heavy shot discrepancy in the team’s favor in second periods this season:
“Well, we had to weather the storm for six or seven minutes in the first period. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. That’s more of an ability to stay with it. If you look at it, other than the first game of the year, even when we went into Anaheim – we lost with the empty netter – we kept coming from behind, and it’s not like we’ve weakened during games. “

On whether the second period shot discrepancy is a byproduct of a heavy road schedule:
“No, I don’t think so. I think we’re just trying to have good starts and good shifts, and then good periods, and then between periods reset the game plan. So that’s all we’re trying to do.”

On the performance of Colin Fraser’s line:

“Well, they didn’t play much, but they scored a big goal and they could have had two or three. We talked to them this morning about it. Jordan Nolan’s really struggling with parts of his game, and hopefully this gives him a little confidence.”

Off topic:Just got back from the Blackhawks/ Canucks game in Chicago so I’m catching up on how the kings game played out but I sure hope Hossa is ok. The forearm to the back of his head was awful from Hansen….and seeing him lie motionless for a minute or so was not good. I can’t believe it was only a 2 minute penalty but it should result in a suspension.

Great time tonight at Rexall Palace. Woooot!

On the Oiler’s postgame radio show they thought the Kings took over half way through the second. I agree although there were some patches where we did get hemmed in our own zone.

@LA_1968, I sorta thought the FIRST half of the second was theirs, and they kinda faded down the stretch (of the second.)

A lot of drunks went home quiet tonight. We were right in line for the Lewis Carter play. Needless to say, we were very pumped on that goal.

It has been a junket for the books. Fantastic. Thanks.

  8. Wilmonde says:

    The boys sounded good tonight.

Defensively, it seemed like Quick wasn’t allowing too many rebounds, and the ones that he did give up, the Kings were preventing the Oilers from getting the second chance.

Offensively, the tone I picked up from from Nickson and Evans was that the Kings were getting much better chances, but they still need to work on driving to the net.

Didn’t Hear Brown or Kopi’s names too often, which probably indicates uninspired play, but Clifford, Carter, and Penner seemed to stick out a bit, and I got a feel that Penner was trying to make some plays out there. Other than the goal, Fraser wasn’t heard from too much, and after the Carter goal, it sounded like Lewis was pretty active tonight.

So, the real question is: Will the Kings be tired for their next game, or will the win give them the confidence to beat the Flames?

  9. On why Sutter put Lewis out with Carter and Richards on the game winner:

Oh wait, that question wasn’t asked.

Interesting, i thought nolan had been doing his role well this year so far, seemed to be the only one hitting, although he also stepped it up tonight. Decent performance, very glad to see lewisb play great and penner actually looked like he might be picking it up. Not the prettiest, but two points is two points, although the high pace edmonton play might mean we’re tired tomorrow

Nolan has had the fumbles in our zone a few too many times.

  11. Duncanz says:

Although it’s may be hard to tell for some, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen DS have a significant meltdown in any interview or press conference.
But Tortzilla yet again went into a paint blistering rant tonight at his postgame saying NYR’s (8-6-1) game with the Habs (11-4-1) was one of the worst games he’s ever been involved in and that both teams were terrible before abruptly terminating it and walking off the platform.
So you’re left with the thought of what a passionate and intense coach this gentleman is. I’ll bet he could get any team in the league into gear. His players must absolutely adore the energy and desperation he exudes.
You wonder just how well he could do in Western Conference hockey ……

    Gustavo Reply:

    @Duncanz,

I suspect DS is just as much of a chair throwing, screaming, cussing coach behind locked doors as Tortorella is a primma donna, dram queen in front of the media. I have no doubt the players know DS has passion.
