@Munchrat, Bernier is not the answer, not unless you want to see the Kings slide further down the standings. Well, they probably can’t slide any further. When quick get his game back, and he will, this will be forgotten. There is a way better shot that Quick will rebound from this, than there is Bernier stepping up.

Getting him into action should serve to increase his value to this team in many ways, whether it be through a trade or by getting us some W’s

@Spencer Maze, This is exactly what everyone here was saying after that Detroit loss last season – and it DID hurt a lot, like yesterday’s loss – but the tide flows in and out every season and you just need the bigger picture.
Do we have the squad to compete? Of course. Do we have the goalie to be top tier? Of course. Are we hopelessly out of the playoffs? Unless you consider 5 pts out, two games in hand and 38 games to play insurmountable, NO.
Chin up! You just gotta have faith!

@bbb7, Last night hurt a lot. The reason it hurt was because when the Kings tied it, it felt like “finally, the monkey is off our back–we’ll at least get a point here.” They played well enough to win, in general, but they played more hard than smart. I hope THAT is the message that Sutter brings. He should appreciate that they’re working hard, but remind them that their fundamentals are off. Most importantly, they gave away the slot too frequently, which made Quick look bad on a night that might have been his best this season.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, I agree. Watching the game yesterday, I had to ask myself… does Ziggy Palffy play for every team we’ve played so far? What I mean is… Ziggy made a career out of skating right down the middle (with speed) seemingly untouched and then scored from 3 feet in front of the goalie. The King’s are allowing too many Ziggy Palffy type of chances from the middle. And just the opposite, when they enter the zone with speed, they seem to ALWAYS peel off to the half-wall or dump instead of continuing their attack from the middle.
@Munchrat, couldn’t hurt at this point. While Quick made some great saves yesterday, it was that last critical one that I think earns Bernier a start. Besides, our starting goalie could probably use the rest

@Robyn, Quick has been significantly less than stellar this season, but last night wasn’t one of those nights. His team gave the Red Wings the best chances of the game. I’d sit Dewey before I sat Quick–except that’s where the team’s really short right now.

@Neil, Few seem to have noticed that Quick benefitted from the same basic six defensemen for the equivalent of almost a whole season, and now two of the three pure defensemen are missing from the lineup. The whole team needs to play a different style to adjust for this, and there are mental adjustments for Quick, too. I’m inclined to agree with Sutter when he says the surgery has nothing to do with it. After all, he was playing in pain all last postseason, and he’s not now. I think it’s more fundamental, and not so much is actually Quick.

According to the advanced stats peeps, the Kings are the best in the league. If Quick’s save percentage was just average, this is a different season. History points to Quick improving (He’s never been bad, quite frankly). But if he keeps letting softies, Bernier’s got to go in to give Quick some time to recover mentally. Perhaps he just needs to see the game from the bench? Perhaps the different D-men are harder to adjust to for him? Either way, I think Bernier should start tonight. (like a lot of you do)

@FKA PakiFro, Where are the stats for clearing the puck, or making saves behind your goaltender, like the Wings did a few times more than the Kings last night? What Quick needs is guidance in adjusting to the differences in the defense in front of him, and I’m sure he’ll do fine with adjustments from Ranny.

@Duncanz,
Read your comment below. We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one, because I don’t think Datsyuk had control when he crossed the line. I think him having to reach behind to get the puck is evidence of that. However, I want to emphasize that I don’t believe that is an excuse. I think that’s a shot (wicked as it may have been) is one that Quick has to stop, as was Brunner’s goal (I blame Doughty on the final goal).

It’s all good. I’m OK with everything that is happening this year. I’m good with the Ellerby trade because its a trade with the future in mind.
We won a cup, Quick is Human and tweaks have to be made. We’ve shown glimpses of being a very good team this year but I do think we are easy to defend against. If we win a cup or 2 over the next 5 years, I’m good with what is happening now. It’s not easy being King.
I believe the plan this year was to get to within striking distance of a playoff spot and then start pounding bodies 10 games out. It is too early to start pounding but if the boys want to repeat, they’re going to have to start racking up the hit count.

KingMe20, @kissmyborschtyskates,
The dealbreaker in this situation is the clause contained in the third paragraph of the Rule that is handily printed right beneath that still shot in the article, in fact:
NHL Rule 83.1
However, a player actually controlling the puck who shall cross the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered “off-side,” provided he had possession and control of the puck prior to his skates crossing the blue line.
Datsyuk (deftly) controls the puck with his right skate before the puck reaches the blue line, even though he actually crosses ahead of the pill.
Therefore, despite the blogger’s subsequent commentary, the linesman is perfectly correct to wash out the offside and the goal is good.

I have to say D, I watched that in super slow mo and to be honest, I think PD got the rub of the green on that call. He was not in control of the puck until he crossed the BL and after the puck hit his skate he had to reach back to collect the puck off his skate. Great play all the same but a homer decision.
FKA PakiFro Reply:

@Duncanz,
I think the blueline is still onside. Its if the entire puck is in the neutral zone. D-men hold the puck on the line and the linesmen never call it because its legal. Now, if the puck was not on the blue line after he was fully in the zone then you have an argument.

Duncanz Reply:
February 11th, 2013 at 11:17 am
@FKA PakiFro, All considerations of position of skates and puck are erased if the puck is “controlled” and in “possession” of the player before it crosses the blue line, per Rule 83.1.
I was shocked when the same type of play happened involving Corey Perry earlier in the season and it didn’t get called. I asked on the blog about it and @Kenny44 brought up this clause
At first it doesn’t seem to compute, but when you examine the wording, it’s plain that the call made yesterday was the correct one.
bbb7 Reply:

@Duncanz, I don’t think you can ‘control’ or ‘possess’ a puck with your skates, any more than you could with a leg. If you use your shin pad to stop the puck and you enter the zone before the puck you are offside, just as you would be if you batted the puck down with your glove and then over-skated it into the zone. ‘Control’ infers more than just having touched the puck, IMO.

Duncanz Reply:

@bbb7, Check it out. That’s how the rule is written up and that’s exactly what he did.
Give me a controvertible definition of controlling the puck. I mean, you can’t carry the puck in your hand, can you…
By any definition of ‘control’, Pavel Datsyuk did so skilfully yesterday and the liner was completely justified in not blowing it up.

Me and my brother invented a term for this a long time ago ITS called a classic KINGS MELTDOWN lol classic because we are used to them and used to disappointment. funny thing is last season i attended the game vs Detroit at staples and it was one of the best games ever and i HATE DETROIT more then anyone. all kings fans should know why so yes it was a bad loss but there is still plenty of season left (kinda) hopefully we make some moves.

- @puck73 is once again the heart and soul of the blog, and his generosity knows no bounds.
As far as the Kings go this is my take:
This is a defense first team that has lost 2 of its 3 top d-men. I think this is causing the team to have an identity crisis. With the guys that are out they can’t be a shutdown type of team, so then what type of team are they? This change in personality is exposing weaknesses that were not apparent last year. The Kings have not been an offensive power house in a very long time, but have been able to get by because they could shut pretty much anyone else down. Until the Kings embrace this change and find a way to adapt I’m afraid this is going to be a very disappointing and frustrating season.

@vinny, Well, I’m not sure one decision pertains to the other here.
Since Datsyuk was never offside in this situation anything that occurs subsequently is judged on its merits and independently.
Incidentally, check the tape at 12:51 of the 1st Period. Exactly the same sort of thing occurs involving Mike Richards (opposite wing, other end of the ice). On that play, the puck caroms off MR’s sweater in the neutral zone and follows him in across the blue line.
Although ‘control’/'possession’ there seems much more debatable than in the Datsyuk play, again nothing is called.

@Duncanz, thanks for the response. I’ll look up the richie play too, thanks. and i do think the two are the same because for a penalty shot to be called, as far as i know, the player, i want to say has to have control of the puck, while the penalty is taken, just as the player has to have control to enter the zone, apparently..but thanks again, i feel like i have a better grasp of what control means to them, and obviously a better understanding of a play i thought was so black and white
Datsyuk was definitely offsides on the first goal. The Kings are giving up too many good scoring chances. While we outshot Detroit by a large margin, the majority of the shots were from the perimeter with little chance of scoring. Detroit had many more quality chances as their skaters barged right down the middle on us. Thus far, the Kings bear little resemblance to the Cup winners of last Spring.

@IN King, Hopefully Mitchell will return soon. I’m not sure the absence of Mitchell and Greene explains the difficulty the Kings are having moving into the offensive zone with speed and flow. It seems as if game after game they are being slowed to a near crawl coming through the neutral zone. They need to develop a sense of urgency to avoid a Lakers-like calamity. I believe that is Sutter’s department.

@john,
The offensive problems are nothing new though. That was here last year, even before Sutter took over. What’s changed are the guys on the back end that were so good at keeping the games close so the offensive struggles didn’t hurt as much.
Where I agree with you is I beleive that it’s Sutter’s job to help this team find a new identity. That’s what great coaches do.
Quick is good but he can’t play all 48 games & the playoff. In a shorten
season a team has to play the backup for some games. We are the only
team to start the same goalie for every game ( yes Bernier played in
Anaheim but only after Quick was pulled). If the organization has
lost confidence in Bernier then trade him & get a different backup
goalie & get Quick some rest. I find it very funny how I keep hearing
we need to keep Bernier in case Quick’s back injury flares up but then
never play him & run the risk of injuring Quick by over playing him.
If they are never going to play the backup goalie then trade Bernier
& bring up a rookie goalie to warm the bench. I just feel this gas
been badly managed by the Kings organization.
