Honestly Darryl and Dean may have waited too long to change things up………..

They are very good hockey minds but people just going through the motions out there need to be highlighted and dealt with immediately.
Too many to mention are just filling a jersey this season and not going for it every shift…….
Players that do that need to sit, com’on Fraser has gone 5 games too many without sitting out…….next should be Richards, Williams and company………
There’s no time to pause and give anyone time this year……48 games with 39 left we need to win often now to compete…..

Lets go Kings get this ship going in the right direction.

@harty, by your logic, the whole team would need to be benched…

This game is a good measuring stick for our defense. If we still can limit their number of shots on goal that means our Ds are doing their job. But if they out-score us with limited shots, that means we are not executing the system properly(most likly our forwards are not contributing defensively) or the goalie is not doing his job.

    [Reply]

    Robyn Reply:

@goldielocks, Or it’s a combination of everything as it has been in the past. Here’s hoping the Kings get their second win of the road trip…

    [Reply]

    goldielocks Reply:

    @Robyn,

Yup. Those stats with shot-on-goal and block-shot amazes me as to how the Kings manage to limit the shots without so many shot-blocking. Offensively, the first goal will be more important it’s ever been.

@goldielocks, Hopefully, the instant success of the new line combos, defenseman and defensive pairings is not to

  11. Russ Dynda says:

Hmmm. I know there is this feeling that Richards-Nolan-King had some success last year. But we’re trying to increase our scoring. Richards is a playmaking center. He’s supposed to set up King and Nolan to score goals???

And let’s see–Carter-Williams-Clifford. Where’s the playmaker on that line?

I know there is an immediacy in turning our season around. But I hope we’re not taking a step backward. Sometimes it takes a little time to recover offensive chemistry. We know that Kopitar-Williams-Brown had it last year. And we know Richards-Carter-Gagne have had it in Philly. I expect them both to begin scoring again soon if we leave them alone. I hope Sutter is not setting us back.

Through the first half of last season the Kings were setting an all-time record for the worst team shooting percentage since the statistic had been kept. Something like 4% at one point. The same disease has returned with a vengeance. They could end up with 50 shots here and just the one goal. Territorially, LA is dominating games they are losing. I should think ‘the book’ on the Kings is simply to play rope-a-dope. You may only get a handful of chances, but burry a couple of them and you steal a couple of points.
Way too many Kings’ shots being blocked, as well. Too many first shots are ON goal– there needs to be more opportunity for something creative on the perimeter.

    Shuchuk Reply:

@JCarson17, Bernier would be better off if he were given some notice before he gets a start and given time to prepare. I know that a pro goalie (especially one who wants a starting gig) should be 100% prepared/focused at all times, but the reality is he must be real used to watching Quick play every minute every night.

    [Reply]

    JCarson17 Reply:

@Shuchuk, The TEAM let down Quick that’s why we lost. I rather have an All Star goalie start over an unproven backup who allowed 5 goal against the Ducks most were very stoppable.

If the Kings offense was on point the score would have been 6-3 easy. Too many loose rebounds with nobody driving to the net. This loss is on the Kings!! Worst offense in the league and painful to watch.

We didn’t get the two points, but we played way better than we have been. Keep playing like we did today and we’ll win more than we loose but if we go back to The Kings of the first 9 games we wont.

That’s just our system and I’ve drank the kool-aid. We’ve seen what they can do when they put in the work. Today we saw the beginning of it, Kings need to keep rolling it and we’ll win more than we lose.

Any system can have a game here and there stolen from them and like I said we’ve been giving away points, today we had them stolen from us. It still sucks but shows promise.

Kings didn’t look good? Go get your glasses back from MacGoo. Low to high on the power play, people moving their feet (pp or not), forwards hustling back to play D, a second period that was nothing but a Kings forecheck.

We did, nobody will argue we got robbed but DD’s play is an individual lack of effort and hockey is a team game. Our forwards were rolling and coming back to help on D which is huge for our system. We got robbed but this still was a good moving forward game.

True, probably better to eat the puck on that play than send it up the boards blind. But that was the least dangerous aspect of that situation. One of the forwards has to be ready to get up the near boards to get the puck out or take the point man. It just has to happen and I understand why Doughty assumed he was making a safe play.

    LomitaKingsFan Reply:

@King Kopitar, The season is not necessarily over yet. But Quick needs to return to form. Failing that we need our offense to step up and start putting away second and third opportunities. About the only move we make that makes sense is to go get another top 4 Dman.

However, Quick is not playing like the Vezina finalist he was last year and Bernier is going to be rusty so he’s going to let in lots of goals. The offense did MUCH better today. There was a lot of hustle and effort on their part.

Our back end is hurting. Our D is going mediocre but our goal tending is just pathetic. It’s hard to argue that the goal tending has been anything less than “eh” at best.

I’d be a lot more upset at Dewey for not eating the puck in the corner, but he did throw my favorite hit of the year so far on Datsyuk in the 1st period. Kings keep putting that kind of pressure on the goals will come, and so will the wins.

a better record against Nashville so why was he not played. I don’t

rely on1 goalie. Let Bernier start a game from the beginning. If this
season had started on time we would have had to play Bernier & a
backup from Manchester because Quick would have been sidelined.
Quick is good but come on – he has come off of back surgery, then
they had to go back in & remove a cyst – his timing is going to be
off. Yes, he needs to play but not every game. If no one is comfortable
with Bernier then trade him because we need help.

Could have been doesn’t get 2 points though. When you combined that with a net minder who is playing comfortable ( playoff MVP / New long term contract) it doesn’t even get 1 point. I have always loved the fact Quick played like an unsettled, on edge hungry keeper! I am not seeing that this year…. I am seeing what we’re once saves turn into trickle in goals and long range wave at attempts. He doesn’t seem to be challenging. I am not placing our lack luster start on him, but he isn’t stealing any points for us this year. He has been average at best. I know he is our # 1 guy, but maybe if we give Bernie 2 or 3 starts in a row Quickie will lose that feeling our comfort and security and regain that fire that carried us last year.

This giving up softies and taking the wind out of our sails blows, and it will only make our offensive players try to play more defense and not focus on scoring. I don’t really give a flying fig if he gets butt-hurt, sit him down and give Bernier a legitimate shot. What have we got to lose? We’re in LAST PLACE for Chrissakes!

Brunner’s goal was stoppable and should have been stopped. I’m not even going to go over the last minute, everyone here’s analyzed it pretty well. The Kings played well enough to win and should have, but keep in mind everyone wants to beat the Stanley Cup champs, and that is what everyone is doing.

@Cesar, I ain’t “sugar coating” it. If we would have played like crap then Detroit would have blown us out. The Kings had 38 shots in 2 periods. Probably about 6 or 7 quality scoring chances that Howard stood on his head to make. Howard was in a zone today and stole this game for the Wings. This is the best game I’ve seen the Kings play this year. A couple of breakdowns, a couple of soft goals and a hot Detroit goaltender cost us the game.

    @Goring 19,

Most of our shots were from within 2 feet from his pad, and he didn’t cut the angle himself but we did cut the angle by ourselves. Going hard to the crease doesn’t mean you get the goal from the initial shot but the rebound. That’s what TM preached to this team. We may succeed one or two goals but that’s about it. We don’t need to bring back that philosophy ever again.

    Quick’s a bad goalie?
    He gave up:
    1) A power play goal from an offside sniper on a breakaway who put it off the crossbar and into the net.
    2) One softie from outside the faceoff circle.
and 3) A screened shot he was in position for the trickled through him.

Man, if a goalie can’t give up one goal a game he’s really not giving his team a chance to win.

The 12 forwards have been letting scoring chances slip through their fingers and not getting back to tie up trailers. How about 6 secs. left, DD with the puck, a defenseman with half a brain freezes the puck against the boards or puts it BEHIND the net. What does the great Doughty do? He sends the puck out to an open point where the Red Wings have their only chance to put a shot on goal! Yeah, Quick sucked, gave up one bad goal, while the Kings shot 45 pucks into the pads of Howard. Unreal, even on Quick’s worst day, he’s still the best player on a very bad Kings offensive and defensive team!

    Goring 19 Reply:

@Happy Lappy, nope. That was a great shot by Zetterberg after he splits the defense. No question about it. The Brunner shot, well, IMO Quick should have had. I’m not going to make Doughty the scapegoat for this loss, or the offense, or the defense. I pin it on the great goaltending of Jimmy Howard. He stopped everything we threw at him.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@Goring 19, I think if Mitchell was even on the bench this game. Voynov drifts to the middle closing the lane for Zetterberg. VV has been solid this year, but that was a mistake you can’t give a player like Zetterberg a speed and a shot in between the circles. Its really hard to take because the Kings out played the Red Wings, but couldn’t get any standing points. If they would have force OT I would still be upset, but on the road you don’t usually get the breaks. The Kings on Offense just need to finish better and also all skaters need to spend a bit more time in the film room to improve their positioning on offense and defense. 4 blippin seconds really?

@phil sykes, The Kings dominated this game and deservrd a better fate. 2 seasons ago The Wings COMPLETELY DOMINATED THE KINGS with over 50 shots on net, and Quick pitched a shutout in a game we had NO BUSINESS WINNING 5-0.

@puck73, yea , so what ….. i know we dominated the game …………… it dosent change the fact that kopitar is useless on one leg – unless u like him playing like a third line center …….. and that injury is not going to get any better till the offseason

and dosent change the fact that keaton is worse than randy jones and denis tsgurov from 20 years ago – ellerby is the worst player ive ever seen

and also dosent change the fact – that yes we played great ………… but now the hole we are in is starting to get way too deep to ever climb out of ………………………. if we had a healthy kopi , and greene , and mitchell – then yes, i believe there still would be plenty of time , but with kopi playing on one leg , and having both those dmen out (not just one) its not going to be as easy to pull ourselves out of this last place hole

it dosent look good , but hey , im not giving up of course , the mad genius sutter had some great line combos today and it worked like i thought it would …. but the injuries are probably going to kill us …….. with the kopitar one being the biggest one in my opinion

Can we PLEASE see what Bernier can do for a couple of games! What can it hurt? Worst case scenario, Bernier plays as bad as Quick and we still lose games. Best case scenario Bernier plays great and gets us some points while adding to his trade value and Quick gets to view the game from another angle (the bench) and gets a rest while he works through his problems and comes back refreshed. Come on Sutter before its too late, and none of this Bernier if for one out for 12 BS.

Now we’ll c how good (or bad) a GM DL is…a cup champion should at least b able to make the playoffs even with the injuries we have. If we’re not deep enough it is DL’s fault

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

Can hardly blame DL for where we find ourselves, @linny.
He won the Cup and did what we all craved in keeping the squad together, a minor miracle.
Wise contracts were offered and signed.
Stewart and Ellerby were acquired at very little cost.
Now it’s up to the Coach and players to reorganize and dig a bit deeper in the face of injuries and dropoffs in form.
DL won’t stop looking to improve the team but you can’t expect sorcery or instant elixirs.
This season is going to be a serious test of composure and resolve – for us fans as much as anyone!

    [Reply]

    linny Reply:

@Duncanz, I’m not blaming him though I thought we were deep enough to handle 2 serious d-man injuries. But that’s not the whole problem. But I always have a hard time understanding the “players aren’t stepping up” quotes by coaches. I mean its the same group that won the cup minus WM n MG of course. I think that’s more likely the problem. But if the players aren’t stepping up what can b done?

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@linny, But MG & WM are two of the three ‘shudown’ guys. That’s the heart of your defense right there!
They are very experienced team leaders and exceedingly physical and aggressive and these are all qualities that their replacements are not so abundantly endowed with.
Which brings up the point; if you’re DL just how do you replace two perhaps irreplaceable Stanley Cup winning shutdown Dmen and what do you do if you find it’s not possible?
I think it’s only just dawning on fans who were formerly complacent and dismissive towards Greener just how critical he was to our success last season!

They don’t play like a team and I think DS isn’t getting through to them, we are last in scoring, crappy on D, lousy in special teams and complete no compete when it comes to heart. There is no excuse for a team with this much talent and and experience to play like this. It’s almost to the point that I don’t want to watch this underachieving team, save my BP from going up, maybe I should wait until they pull their collective asses out of their butts, no but I’m a good and loyal Kings fan and I like this abuse, sheesh. @puck73,

Maybe start shopping Bernier around, he’s going to be traded regardless next year before the 13-14 season so why not get something now? I know we hoping to wait for Martin Jones to prove himself capable, but there is no sense is waiting till the end of the season if we don’t make playoffs this year, I say trade Bernier now, get something we can use immediately in return, that gives us a shot a making playoffs. It’s a shortened season so it’s coming up on do or die for the kings. If we risk not getting a back up in the trade, so what. Shortened season means quick can play nearly all the 38 games we have left, if he gets hurt then were out of the playoffs. And we have the whole off season to trade for a appropriate back up if Jones doesn’t prove himself to be a capable backup. If we don’t trade the one piece of commodity that we have, (who doesn’t add to our current team dynamic) when other teams want him right now the we are being too cautious. To win the cup we must take risk and I don’t see how this risk isn’t an all or nothing play. I think it’s the only play we have for a chance at all?

@Naturallawyer, also, to clarify, .one cup is good enough for me personally as a lifetime fan n financial supporter of the kings since inception, regardless of who was gm. Going deep into the playoffs n another cup final or two n 3 cup wins in 12-15 years would make him great.

Still time left but tHings need to change quickly. The lines were good. I wouldn’t change that. Gagne didn’t play that badly. We shot ourselves in the foot at the worst possible time. WhNe was the last time we tied something up in the third? It was a loss thaT hurt but we played better than the last several games.

Go with Bernier now and you take away any chance we have. Keep taking it up a notch in intensity but play smearter hockey. For Kings style hockey, it doesn’t get much better than today unfortunately. Keep the intensity. A little more finesse and a little less slop-fest. Drive the middle – you don’t have to park everyone there and make them collapse.

Don’t know what game the naysayers were watching but we outplayed the wings the entire game. Howard stole 2 points much like Quick did 15+ times last year.

You just can’t replace Greene AND WM with DD2 and flavor of the week…won’t work for 48 games and won’t win you a cup! Martinez and Voynov look solid but they are being forced to step up and that wont’ last all year. DD and Scuds are being forced to log heavy minutes and play every other day = mental mistakes will happen. Kings won the cup last year because they were balance up front and on the blue line.

Today’s game reminded me of so many games last season. Kings dominate and outplay their opponent and don’t come away with any points.

One positive note….the new line combinations looked very solid. Anytime you can push Stoll down to the C4 spot that shows how deep this team is. Richards between King and Nolan (best game King played all season) looked very good but no speed on that line. Not thrilled with Carter at center…would like to see the following

    Clifford – Kopi – Brown
    King – Carter – Williams
    Gagne – Richards – Nolan
    Penner – Stoll – Lewis
