Campbell to Kings; Bodnarchuk to Manchester

The Kings recalled 6’4, 206 pound defenseman Andrew Campbell from AHL-Manchester on Wednesday, assigning defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk to Manchester.

NHL.com

Campbell had six assists in 27 games for the Monarchs, including a plus-11 rating that led Manchester defensemen. He was a third round draft pick by Los Angeles in 2008 and is a veteran of 325 AHL games.

Campbell was a teammate of Jake Muzzin’s with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where he also played alongside Wayne Simmonds, Jiri Tlusty and Andrew Desjardins. He provides a sizeable, left-shooting option on the Kings’ blueline.

Bodnarchuk, who appeared in five games with Boston in 2009-10, did not appear in a game with the Kings.

Muzzin could probably use a night off to assimilate what he’s learning on the fly at the NHL level. He’s a little sketchy right now, but you can see some potential there too.

    @Lake Forest,

My guess is it’s more about getting Bodnarchuk back on the ice than Campbell being a better fit. This is Campbell’s very first call up and it’s been a long time coming. Just as I said below, my guess is it’s more about culture than anything to do with actually playing on the Kings right now.

    @Lake Forest,

Here’s my take. Bodnarchuk hasn’t played a game in 3-4 wk, so he has to get some game action. Campbell replaces Bodnarchuk and I it remains to be seen whether he’s any more likely to replace Muzzin (or anyone else barring injury) than was Bodnarchuk. A confident, experienced MUzzin is what they want and need, and he doesn’t benefit from being swapped out just to give the 7th D some game. He needs games in. As for the other D, they all won a Stanley Cup and, with the exception of Voynov, hadn’t played in over half a year, so they’re all going to be cut some slack, even if it is a shortened season. Aa a King’s fan, you should be encouraged to know that, on the whole, Bodnarchuk and Campbell both played as well or better than Voynov and Muzzin in Manchester, even though they all differ in the type of game they bring. AS well, they’re all 24 or younger.

Good for him. I was beginning to think he would never get a taste of NHL life, let alone a game. He has flown so far under the radar he’s almost stealth. Maybe that’s a good thing for a defenseman.

At the end of the day though, I don’t believe this is anything more than a move by DL to continue building the new Kings culture. I love it.

    IceGuy Reply:

    @Bradapiller,
I said last season that if need be – I was pretty sure that AMart (fellow Miami University alum) was good and smart enough to to learn “stay at home” duties on the blue line. That doesn’t mean he has to be a huge hitter, fighter or never go with the offensive flow when the situation calls for it. Voynov seems to be finding his groove recently. DD is taking on a huge responsibility and performing well.

Being real – Scuds, Willie and Greener are not going to be the future of the Kings. DD2 can be a third pair stay at home. AMart may well anchor the 1st or 2nd pairing. That leaves room for attack defensemen Doughty, Voynov right now Muzzin. Think about it, 3 years from now DD, AM and VV are going to be the grizzled “vets” on the blue line: average age – just under 27! And there’s another real big kid playing in North Dakota at the moment, too.

Let’s see how Campbell reacts to “the show”. Welcome AC!

Not “for certain” at all. There’s zero reason to believe he’ll play. In fact, everything points to he won’t play. Kings won, Muzzin is here for a reason getting valuable experience and Campbell has never played 1 second in the NHL. Seems very unlikely, let alone certain.

Don’t expect to be wowed or amazed at Andrew Campbell. He is a younger version of Scuderi in a manner of speaking. Steady, stay-at-home style play, good size, decent hockey IQ, and decent gap control.

He was a -31 in his first two seasons of pro hockey with the Monarchs, but made incredible strides in his game and the following two and a third seasons was a combined +37.

Just getting a chance to watch last nights game with some observations:

Overall, the team is playing much better and more aggression
More people spending more time in front of the net
Kopi’s knee is about 90%,definitely getting stronger based upon his time spent in front of the net
    Carter is already at 100%
    Doughty is at 100%
Quick is about 90% (just needs to work on his focus alittle more)
Williams is about 90% His game is all about great timing and that is almost there
Richards is at 80%. His game is about competing and his increased compete level reflects better better conditioning
    Voynov is at 100%
Penner is at 24%, aka “Frolov Level.” Not sure what he is or going to do but I will always have a warm spot in my heart for him for scoring the goal that put us in the SCF
Brown is about 80% He still needs to work on his timing and need to see him start hitting more
    Scuds is about 95%
    AMart is about 95%
Gagne is about 85% He doesn’t look as lost as he did a few games ago
Lewis is 100% (yes, but we don’t ask much from him)
Fraser is 80%. Needs to work on his timing and hitting people
Drewiske is 90%. Looking pretty good, just needs to work on his reads.
Stoll is 90%. Starting to hit more people, and his shots are..welll… in the rink.
King is 85%. He still looks a little slow and lost, and not hitting people
Nolan is 90%. He needs to start hitting more people and crashing the net more.
Clifford is 100%. He looks like he lost weight and his timing and compete levele are already there
Bernier is whatever @poorman and other supporters think he is minus the hypotenuse of a triangle multiplied by the prime rate as established in November of 1977.
    DS is 100%
Bob and Jim are about 90%
    Nick and Darryl are 100%
Jon Rosen is about 75% and improving rapidly

Overall, the team is getting better, and yes, I know this game was against the BJ’s, but last year these guys gave us fits.

    I love the 24% Frolov level…

Also while Rosen is at 75% I like his level of compete. This guy is gonna be good for us. He plays a hard game. Good shot/post mentality.

Which by the way is one thing which needs to be mentioned: during the lockout and early part of the season people talked about this blog dying and losing its mojo when the reality is that not having a new topic on a daily basis to talk about (i.e. playing games) means that even the best writer will find it difficult to conjure up topics to keep readers coming back.

Basically the elements I look for in this blog are the following:
    1) consistent posts (which was of course lacking post Rich, while Bob, Jim, Nick, & Daryl tried to pinch hit)
    2) content which you can’t get at other places (I mean this is called “the Insider” for a reason)…otherwise why am I coming here?
    3) being about to comment in a respectful manner (while we had a huge influx of new people with the Cup run last year I think those who post generally are quite good at this… and of course the thankless job of moderating behind the scenes)
    4) open and accessible to all (remember that post Rich had about considering Facebook account linking? Tar and feather him!)

While the Kings may not be able to directly monetize my usage of the blog, I will say that when done well (which Rich was great, and so far Jon you’ve done a terrific job in my part… call it like it is and be unbiased!) the blog adds to my personal connection to the Kings as a franchise/family and it encourages me to keep on “consuming” the Kings product. I.e. I feel good about being a fan, even when things on the ice aren’t always great, and it makes me buy Kings products, tickets, etc.

If I may add a few suggestions…which since you’re in Nashville for a few days Jon maybe that’s a blog post idea while you’re recording video of Bob singing:

    1) an edit button (which apparently over the years I’ve heard is harder than landing a man on the moon)
    2) a calendar link on the side panals of the blog where people can post ticket notices for upcoming games or away game meet-ups (like the infamous ones in Phoenix during the playoffs). I think part of the blog’s role is to create and maintain a sense of community amongst a hard core fanbase. A central place for people to talk about meeting in enemy territory or extra tix (we can call this @Puck’s Corner) would be huge. As a fan in NY I try to attend east coast games whenever I can, so this would be neat. Right now comments like that are mixed in with other comments in unrelated posts (when we readers go off-topic as per usual)

Just ask Muzzin that question, the Duck stepped right around him in Anaheim.

the skill at this level is gap control in the nuetral zone, containment as mentioned above, and can they move the puck with any accuracy. Bingo if you can complete the ask by answering “yes” then you will remain in the NHL as a defensemen, if not…..here’s your ticket to Manchester kid.
