    Welcome aboard Jon..don’t screw it up! :)

    Tough to analyze last nights game. The Kings did a lot of really good things defensively, but offensively they have to find a way to get the shots thru. change the angles, do something, but get the friggin puck to the net. When they actually got pucks to the net, they had absolutely no net presence. Hence the 1 goal outburst.

    I really liked the play of the D. I am slowly becoming a believer in both DD2 and Muzzin. Both looked very comfortable on the ice and made smart, heady plays.
    They really haven’t missed Willie Mitchell all that much. They obviously miss his leadership, but the kdis are doing more than enough to lessen the loss of both Mitchell and Greene.
    it’s going to be tough and perhaps not fair that one of them will be sitting in the press box when Mitchell returns.
    Doughty continues to show his maturity and leadership more and more every game. He’s making smart end to end rushes when things become stagnant.
    All 6 D’men are playing at a high level. The future is bright on the blueline for the Kings for years to come.
    Great game by Scuds last night. I thought it was his best game of the year.

    As for the offense……

    @nykingfan,
    You are right about the defense. Even Foxy was pointing out the subtle little adjustments and moves Muzzin, AMart and Voynov were making. But the O …

    Bob and Jim pointed out – several times during the game – how many blocked shots the Preds have, and what that means in terms of where your shots are coming from: Outside. I’ll give the Preds their due, they really did work hard to pin forwards to the mid-wall throughout the game. But if you force the play that way, there should be someone open on the far side. Someone has to cut through the crease, crash the net, quite simply – move.

    Doughty made one of his trademark end to end rushes, and no one followed him in. That says a lot I think. For whatever reason, the offense seems slightly out of sync. Brown’s goal was a “right time / right place” moment. I’m glad he knocked it in, but that was not an indicator of how the O is going. Someone has to strap their line on their back and say “follow me” and go inside, or at least feel the puck on their stick and wrist it in faster.

    The time it takes to look before you shoot is equal to the time it takes for their defense to close gaps and adjust.

    This is deja vu all over again. What is going to have to be done to the this team fired up again? Fire the coach and trade somebody?

    The part that’s frustrating is that for the most part, the effort seemed to be there. The offensive pressure was there, the fore check was good (for the most part), Quick wasn’t his best but still wasn’t bad. However, it’s the same problem as last season, put the damn puck in the net! This game shouldn’t have ended this way.

  6. vplaza says:

    Some thoughts:

    * They need to send out search party for Justin Williams, Dwight King, and Fraser.
    * Quick played well, but he had a couple of shaky plays during regulation and he looked almost spooked during the shootout. Very uncharacteristic of him.
    * The PP will be the death of this team, causing it to either make or miss the playoffs.
    * Unbelievable how many shots found a Predator skate, stick, leg, arm, etc.
    * The Kings are trying to get each possible game outcome and now only need to win a game in OT to complete the cycle since they’ve already lost in regulation, won in regulation, lost in a SO, won in a SO, and lost in OT during the young season.

    “Jonathan Quick has a 29-16 lifetime record in shootouts.”

    That is pretty awesome. Especially when you consider the Kings skaters are not your typical shootout prototypes.

    And welcome @JonRosen! I admired your reporting on the Kings before this new gig. You always had information that I didn’t know even though I read everything possible on the Kings.

    @LA_1968, The scary thing is Quick was like 90% in shootouts 2 years ago. Last year is were most of his SO losses started. His SO save % dived last year to about 65%, and to make things worse Handzus a very good SO guy not resigned last year, JJ traded midseason also a good SO guy, and Stoll & Kopi have trended down in SO%. So it really is a combination of all things.

    Was at the game last night. Got my ring and that was pretty much the highlight of the night.

    Stoll: How long are we gonna put up with his zero offensive skills?
    Richards: 2nd line center has to put up more points that that.
    Brown: Dead last in plus minus still on a line with Kopitar and Willams.
    Gagne: Welcome back to the bench.
    King: Looking slow like his first stent with the Kings.

    I’d say, Nolan, Carter and Clifford are the only King forwards that came into the season ready to play. I’ll give Kopitar a pass due to injury.

    Sure wish there was a way to see Toffoli up here.

    [Reply]

    Deirdre Reply:

    @KC23, Gagne was fine and should be in the 2nd line, the shifts he took with Carter and Richards showed that.
    Kopitar – 0 shots on goal again and didn’t have a good game.

    Gustavo Reply:

    @Deirdre,

    What game where you watching?
    Gagne was an absolute negative every time he was on the ice. He has ZERO physical presence and his puck handling skills seem to have deserted him. He made one good pass that went nowhere, but got run over every other time he touched the puck.

    I don’t know what’s going on between Penner & Sutter, but at this time I think DP is worth another shot. Bring up Toffoli, perhaps?

    [Reply]

    luuc Reply:

    @Gustavo,

    Funny how two people can watch the same game and see two totally different things. I actually thought Gagne had one of his better overall games. He handled the puck better, skated ok, and actually created a couple good chances. He had a great chance to win the game near the end if only he could have picked the corner a little better.

    @Kinger,

    My only criticism of Quick is that he’ll need to adjust somewhat for the shutouts. Shooters around the league know how well he covers the ground and how fast he is moving sideways, so they shoot high.

    Other than that, I think you need to reconsider making such a nonsense comment about Bernier/Quick.

    JQ already is today what JB aspires to become some day.

    Quickie seemed lost out there. Did we have the scout report about the shooters in SO? Who was that goalie who used the iPad in the bench before he faced the shooters? Do we have the iPad?

    I guess it doesn’t matter when we can’t win against the team who had only 11 shots on goal in regulation. It was almost like we were waiting them to block the shot. They didn’t own us in our own zone by all means but they owned us in their own zone.

    Small change can help like put Penner in and call up Toffoli.

    Sure, why not? The NHL allows players to use their sticks while on the bench, then lie about it on national TV, so why not use an iPad? The Preds were probably looking up the “My Little Pony” website or getting the operating hours for LegoLand.

    This is how I see the season going. We survive the first third of the season (so far, 6 points in 6 games). We then go on a tear in the middle third racking up a couple of 5-6 game win streaks. We then play slightly above average in the last third, guaranteeing us a #7 or #8 seeding. We roll in to the playoffs as the underdogs, again. The Kings find that playoff gear after lsoing their razors. Anticioating another month of complete Stanley Cup debauchery, the team focuses completely on another Cup run and repeats. Anheuser Busch is saved by the Kings Stanley Cup repeat and fuels the economic recovery of our nation. Jon Rosen becomes internationally famous for his incredible coverage of the Cup run and the ensuing economic recovery under a Bud-Light haze. When confronted by Bettman for reporting the truth, that the Kings are the repeat Stanley Cup champions despite Evil Load’s best efforts to deny them the repeat, Rosen quotes the most famous Laker fan of all, “You can’t handle the truth!”, thus desroying Bettman since even he can’t argue with Jack.
