Darryl Sutter Post-Game Quotes

On his top forwards scoring: “Kopi was good tonight…The goal-scorers scored.  Carts had one too.  That’s what wins the game.”

On Jake Muzzin: “I didn’t know it was his first NHL goal.  But he hit the net.  We talked about that yesterday privately and [to the media].  D hitting the net.”

On the defensemen: “Our D is solid.  They  played good all three games.  The six of them.  We haven’t given up a whole lot other than on the power play.”

@Mars, This isn’t football. Sutter works on the PP as does Bernie. Kampon’s focus was on the PP but that doesn’t mean he designs what how the Kings execute. He was an assistant, the head coach is in charge of the PP, PK, and even strength.

I have been saying the same thing for two years. Any Bantam or Pee Wee knows to be active on the powerplay. The Kings’ players just don’t do it, possibly because they do not possess the skills to do it.

    Darryl Sutter Post-Game Quips

On his top forwards scoring: “Kopi showed up tonight … The goalscorers scored. And that non-scorer Carts got one too, jeez. That’s what wins the game, but it didn’t the last time we scored.”

On Jake Muzzin: “I didn’t know he hadn’t scored before. What was that Murray fella teaching him? But he hit the net … Well, he hit Babs’s glove, to be quite honest with you. We talked about that yesterday and the day before and the day before that. Finally someone listened, jeez.”
On the defensemen: “Our D is solid … if you don’t count 7, 8, 26, 27, and 44. They played good all 3 games, except the last 2. All 6 of ‘em, except those ones I mentioned. We haven’t given up a whole lot other than on the power play, and when the refs aren’t bailin’ us with those crappy early whistles.”

On why your post-matches are so short now: “That Hammond fella could keep you in the room forever with his inane questions. The new guy’s a bit of a soft touch … thank Christ, jeez.”

    Osaka Reply:

@Osaka, 20 goals and 100 PIMs is a 2nd or 3rd line power forward on most teams. First line on some. Depends the team depth and style of play. We know what style Sutter likes. Gagne is on the 4th and KC is on the second. Hey, if he could put up 30 goals and get into the Doan or Hartnell stratosphere someday……. One can dream.

    Duncanz Reply:

You know what, @0 sake? It really does boil down to self-belief. Cliffy has shown a couple of times now that he’s got it to be an impact player at vital times. The deal now is if he can convince himself that he has even more to offer than simply what a gritty checking liner can bring, vis-a-vis your Doans, Hartnells, La Perrieres, even your Otts and your Arnotts, he can cement his position as a King rather than just be that popular but tradeable bubble guy.
Big season he’s got in front of him personally, and so far, no small thanks to the lockout, he’s approached it with aplomb.

Have you noticed that Kopitar literally never ever tries a one timer … but he’s usually not in position for one … EXACTLY, he NEVER gets in position for a one timer. He also never passes immediately off the pass, he takes all day settling the puck, giving the defense time to get in the passing lanes as well as shot blocking position.

    Drives me nuts.

@harty, Richards had to know fighting Doan, was not good for his health, being much smaller he went after Him anyway, that’s a true leader, and great teammate, and In my opinion, he will wear kings C on his chest one day……. Maybe this season

    [Reply]

    Deirdre Reply:

@JD, Richars will always immediately go after anyone who takes a run at one of him teaammates, it’s part of what makes him liked and respected by anyone whose every shared a bench with him, a true leader.
But he’s always smaller than his opponent, they are always bigger and heavier, and he usually doesn’t win but it’s not about winning, it’s about standing up for what’s right. And knowing that he has the back of anyone on that team makes him the guy that everyone of those players will go to war for

    Stuart Reply:

@tornado12, I’ve been trying to tell ya! :)

    KC23 Reply:

@JD, As long as Brown is a King he’ll be wearing the C. That fight with Doan sums up everything right with Richards. More and more though it looks like Richards should be a 3rd line center, not a 2nd line center. Stoll looks more and more like a 4th line center.

After Kopitar our center position has a huge goal scoring drop off. That needs fixing. Richard’s contract has us with him forever which pretty much means Stoll is the odd man out or Stoll to line four and we pick up a center than can put 30 goals in the net and can play defense.

Stoll, Fraser and Richards are dragging the team’s offense right down to the bottom of the league and that just can’t be left unfixed.

    [Reply]

    tornado12 Reply:

@KC23, while i dont entirely agree with the idea that Richards is a 3rd line center, it is a very troubling one and thus far his offensive showing with the Kings has been subpar. DL gave up a lot to get him and he is being paid way too much to be a 3rd line center. I agree he hasnt shown the offensive consistency during his time with the Kings that he has shown in the past. I think with the Kings system it is too much to expect the second line center to have 30 goals, not even our first line center can do that. I think we need to see some improvement this year, but again it is a shortened season so I dont know if its going to be enough to fully judge. Next year, however, should be ample time for him to show his stuff. Lets all hope he can step it up and produce for what he is being paid because as you said it will be extremely difficult to move his contract if he continues to struggle offensively.

    CB14 Reply:

@KC23, It wouldn’t surprise me to see Toffoli brought up and Stoll traded if the offense continues to struggle like last season. Then move Carter to 2nd line C and Richards to 3rd line C. The reason why Richards was traded from Philly was because they didn’t want to keep paying MR 1st line money while playing on the 3rd line, and with Giroux and Briere, that’s where he was playing. Deano thought a new situation would help him return to form, but it hasn’t happened.

    IceGuy Reply:

    @KC23,
I don’t believe you should include Fraser on that list of disappointments. I think he’s doing his job. Up until last night, whose line produced more goals? Fraser is not on the team to log 30 goals. Every point his line adds is a bonus for the team.

    JD Reply:

@KC23, I don’t think the kings strip browns C, I just see last years per trade deadline brown out there, there is no shortage of GM’s lining up to get a shot at brown, this year I think DL might make the move.

    Stuart Reply:

@JD, IMO you’re giving MR too much credit this time… I think he knew Doan could be baited into the fight no problem after the hit (and plus MR was probably still smarting from that slewfoot take down off the faceoff in the WCF) and he figured he’s been an anchor on the ice so his 5 minute absence would mean much but to get Doan off the ice for most of the remainder of the game would be huge, so he went for it…

And I doubt MR becomes our 3rd line center… But maybe an extended IR visit…

    [Reply]

    Michael J. Reply:

    @Stuart,

Going after Doan and taking him off the ice for nearly the last five minutes of the game was Richard’s best play of the season.

It was fun seeing MR go after Doan for taking DB down like a rag doll after the hit. It should surprise nobody. MR played his whole career like that. He even took on 6’6″ Hanzal during the playoffs. Then again, it’s no surprise that MR had concussions that took him out of the line up for significant stretches.

With that said, I’d much prefer to see King, Nolan and Clifford be the ones making the Doans pay for their antics, not MR.

    [Reply]

    tornado12 Reply:

@Gustavo, I agree. He is all heart but is also pne bad concussion away from potentially ending his career. I also worry about Clifford when he fights due to his past concussion issues. Pound for pound from what I’ve seen Nolan is our best fighter and knows how to protect himself. That being said I don’t want to see anybody from the kings taking on renown tough guys like bissonnette, Scott and heavy weights of that ilk. Losing westgarth definitely left a hole in that department but as we all know it’s not imperative to have now a days to have a successful team. Does anyone know if the kings have any heavyweights in the system that could potentially fill that role if needed?

Watcing that failed 5-on-3, one thing I noticed was their three penalty killers were barely moving. They kept their positions all the time while the Kings were sustaining the pressure. They didn’t look like tired even though they were killing it for a long time.

I think what they need to do is drawing them out from their protective triangle to find the seam.

@goldielocks, Agreed. There isn’t an NHL coach on the planet that would say a player without a stick in that situation should leave for the bench. It seems the only half board players that play on the half board that will use the one timer for shooting and passing is Richards and Gagne. Kopitar always feels he has to settle the puck before he does anything with it which gives the defense all the time in the world to cover the shooting and passing lanes.

Here is a question to chew on for a while. Who do we sit when Mitchell comes back? Do we keep DD2 in the line up with more experience and outstanding PK skills or Muzzin with the upside of more offensive skills? Both shoot left and are about the same weight with Muzzin being 2 inches taller.

I’m guessing it will be DD2 because of experience and he’ll be replacing Greene who has just about the exact same skill set as Greene, DD2 payed his dues on the scratch list and is 6 years older than Muzzin.

I think Muzzin would be the better choice myself because we need offense in a big way and Muzzin doesn’t give up much defense in exchange.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@KC23, that will be interesting… judging by what has been said regarding DS telling DD2 that he would be replacing Greener, I’m thinking it’ll be Whiskie’s to lose… maybe they’ll dress 7 Dmen?

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@Stuart, I doubt DS would ever not use 4 forward lines, but especially in a compressed 48 game schedule. Perhaps for a game to see where Mitchell is at though, you never know.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@KC23, you’re probably right. I doubt even for that first game since it seems DS feels Mitchell should already be playing.

    tornado12 Reply:

@KC23, I think we need to give Muzzin more of a chance to see what hes got at this level. Though DD2 has been impressive thus far this season, Mitchell is an upgrade there. simply put, Muzzin has more upside at this point.

    KC23 Reply:

@KC23, And oh BTW, Suban shoots right. :)

    Duncanz Reply:

@KC23, The injuries to Greene and Mitchell have been dual blessings in disguise because it has caused these two to get thrown into the thick of things and, being early on in the season when instant performance and results are less vital, this is the best possible time for this situation to occur.
At some point 2 and 33 will be retiring/moving on/injured again so this rehearsal time is invaluable as far as the team and 6 & 44 are concerned.
It really is a win-win-win for everyone.

  29. KingMe20 says:

A lot of positive signs can be pulled from what we saw last night. Here’s a few things I’ve seen during the first week:

    1. The difference in Kyle Clifford’s play between this year and last year can be summed up by the word “confidence.” Clifford looks like he believes he should be playing in the top three lines, but hasn’t forgotten the work ethic of a fourth-line player. The time he spent with Ontario has served him well, and he’s putting pressure on a couple of veterans (Gagne, Penner) to fight for their spot on the roster.

    2. Carter and Doughty appear to have really worked hard during the lockout to stay in shape, and it’s showing on the ice. We’ve all heard the doughnut jokes about Doughty, and we’ve all heard that Carter’s reputation is that he relies solely on talent to get by, but doesn’t work hard. Their play so far tells me that these guys cared a lot about staying in shape so that they could be ready to go when the season began, and the effort that each has put it is really paying off.

    3. These kids on defense are alright. Voynov is Voynov, and Alec Martinez is probably the most underrated player on this team. I’m really happy with how he’s stepped up with Greene and Mitchell out. Jake Muzzin hasn’t looked out of place at all, and it was great to see him get a goal. I also think Davis Drewiske played his best game as a King last night. It’s gotta be pretty tough to spend nearly an entire year in the press box and then be asked to play like he’s been playing this week.

    4. Good to see the top line clicking again. Williams was outstanding last night, and Kopitar is back to normal with a little nasty left over from the playoffs. I like that he’s hitting more even though it’s not something that he has to do. Brown made a really nice pass on Kopitar’s first goal, and he had a goal taken away from him in Edmonton the previous game, so I’m hoping that he’s starting to heat up as well.

    5. They still haven’t scored on the power play, but I thought they moved it well on the 5-on-3. Still standing around a bit too much though, and Doughty should think about using more wrist shots to catch goalies by surprise when they’re screened. The big, long windup just makes shots easier for the defense to block, and the goalie can also hear it coming.

Quick has gotten better every game, but I think Bernier should get a start this week. He owns Nashville, so they might as well throw him in there for that one.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@KingMe20, Agree with all of that except one thing: this whole “Bernier owns Nashville” thing is nonsense. Does everyone here really think Bernier knows something he isn’t telling Quick or Nashville knows something about how to score against Quick the other 28 teams don’t know? Try the following experiment: take 29 pieces of paper, divide them in half, and write “Bernier” on one half and “Quick” on another. For each section flip a coin 10 times and call it a “win” if its heads, a “loss” if its tails. I GUARANTEE you “Bernier” will have a far superior record to “Quick” for one of the “teams”.

And thankfully, while TM would not have agreed with me, DS does.

This is not to say that Bernier shouldn’t be given a start, and Nashville isn’t any worse to so it than anyone else. But c’mon now if we play Nashville in the playoffs would you really advise DS to start Bernier?

I especially like to see links on the other teams media to find out what their fans, players, coaches and management are saying.

If you’re on your computer, holding ‘ctrl’ when clicking opens to a new window. You can also ‘right click’ to do the same.

So the Sharks are looking mighty scary, at this early stage at least.
Taking care of Canucks in the 1st Period here, although the back-to-back might catch up to them later in the game.
This year they’ve added Stuart, Gomez and Burish and this young Dman, Matt Irwin looks really handy.
Four beautifully balanced lines and the 1st line is on fire like New South Wales right now; Marleau, Thornton & Pavelski leaving burn marks in the ice and lighting the lamp like Christmas.
Clowe beating up on all-comers and Douglas Murray ‘lurch’ing around in front of Niemi who’s handling things ok so far.
Boyle and Vlasic look in top form, and they’re doing without Brett Burns (IR) just fine.
Mercifully Kings don’t have to face them until March 14th, so hopefully they’ve gone off the ‘Boyle’ by then.
