The Kings team flight didn’t leave Edmonton until 1 a.m. last night…and the club didn’t check into their hotel until about 5 a.m. With that, they’re scheduled practice at Jobing.com Arena this afternoon has been canceled. The Kings are next scheduled to take the ice tomorrow at Jobing.com Arena for 10:30 a.m. morning skate.
We’ll pass along some notes throughout the day. Tomorrow’s game vs. the Coyotes starts at 5 p.m. (PT) on Fox Sports West, with the pre-game show “Kings Live” starting at 4:30 p.m. (PT). All games can be heard on KTLK AM 1150 and along the Kings Radio Network.
Does anyone have any idea why the Oilers were not given a bench minor for the fans littering the ice last night? They made the announcement not to throw things at least 3 times.
63.4 Objects Thrown on the Ice – In the event that objects are thrown on the ice that interfere with the progress of the game, the Referee shall blow the whistle and stop the play and the puck shall be faced-off at a face-off spot in the zone nearest to the spot where play is stopped. When objects are thrown on the ice during a stoppage in play, including after the scoring of a goal, the Referee shall have announced over the public address system that any further occurrences will result in a bench minor penalty being assessed to the home Team. Articles thrown onto the ice following a special occasion (i.e. hat trick) will not result in a bench minor penalty being assessed. Refer also to Rule 53.6 when spectator interference occurs during a breakaway.

@GailWeb, doesn’t the new CBA have restrictions on practice days and day-off days based on when they get in and the number of hours thereafter or something?… maybe that also has something to do with it…
… that all being said i trust DDS for knowing the pulse on his team. The Kings had enough practice time for the pp, it was during the game and it came up blank (and a post shot or 3). Rest is good.
On a sidenote, the offense is not there for the top 6 (although Carter and Clifford look good) but the defense feels good.

If they’re not going to practice anyway then why not get a decent nights sleep and travel to Phoenix today? That late night flight must’ve sucked with everyone tired and angry after the game.
I hope the Kings noticed the Oilers post-game celebration last night. It was obvious they were jacked-up for the game and beating the champs meant more to them than just another win. Hopefully this is the wake-up call the Kings need to make them realize that things are going to be different this year. Every team wants to fatten up their resume by beating the Stanley Cup Champions.

@stagger, I’m pretty sure changing their travel schedule on the fly is an almost herculean task. There are so many variables to consider, not the least of which are rooms for everyone, which I believe were already relinquished and checked out of as well as the flight itself. That and much more takes time to plan and coordinate. We’re talking about a lot of people.

Yeah, I know. I travel for work very often with large groups of people and gear. However, I believe the Kings travel by charter, no? Which means it’s just them on the plane. So, depending on other obligations for the plane/crew, they should be able to postpone the flight until morning.
[Reply]
Player leadership needs to step up and show up on the ice. Brown and Kopi had a few good shifts last night but not consistently. I expected them to come out firing, seeing that they were active during the lockout.
No real panic on my end because I did see some good Kings hockey last night, some things just didn’t workout(hit the post a few times). Hoping they get into a groove by game 12
[Reply]
Here’s my thought…
There are many similarities to another early season game last season, against the Dallas Stars. A late tying goal, an overtime loss… A faceoff outside the zone with 4 seconds left, impossible for them to score, yes?
Instead of Richards pulling the puck back safely it is pushed beyond him into the Kings’ zone. A quick 2 on 0 and the game is tied… Crowd goes crazy, Dallas gets the win, we are all depressed… Yet in the end the Cup is ours.
Give credit where credit is due. Dish out the blame, lost the faceoff with 10 sec to go, Scuderi cheating towards the middle instead of shouldering Yakupov, Quick leaving a juicy rebound… The penalty for too many men in OT, a thread-the-needle pass…
What matters is the point in the standings gained on the road, and the realization that our veterans do not yet have their NHL legs. This is a work in progress, and it is still too early to conclude anything.

I thought the celebration was appropriate for the game at hand…Kings are crying like they are entitled..they arent…my worry is they look like the team they did and have for years and maybe the playoff run was a total fluke…it was almost too easy…I want a contender every year, not a flash in the pan cinderella story.
I watch other teams that lose all the time and they are willing to at least hit the other team, our top six have always been up and down in the grit dept…when we play simple old time hockey good things happen…we need to trade some people Im afraid, especially after losing Greene and Mitchell. Clifford is effective cause he hits the other team and is a pain in the ass to play against…where is Brown?? Richards just hurts to watch with his lazy crap.

The report says Dean is still looking for a veteran D. But with watching Drewiske and Mazzin playing really well, shouldn’t we give them some more time to see how it develops? So far, their losses have been on their top 6 forwards. Not supporting D or being lazy or drawing poorly, blowing coverage … etc. What they need now is, tweaking forward lines to make them work. Based on their performance so far, Richards, Williams, Stoll, King, Lewis, Penner, Gagne should be either demoted or benched. ‘Bring it or watch’ was the exact words from their coach. But with so many not bringing, what Sutter can do? Perhaps a new blood will help? Why not bringing up likes of Toffoli to send the message like ‘Hey, just because you won the cup, do not think that you are safe in the lineups’?

If you show panic after 3 games, and bringing up Toffoli does signnal panic, what does that say to the Stanley Cup champs and what you think of their heart and mettle?
They played a pretty good game last night. Kopi was a lot more involved and Quick was on top of his game. The PK was awesome.
The PP sucked and the officials didn’t give them a chance to play some true 5 on 5 hockey.
It’s tough to play that type of game against a skilled, but soft Edmonton team. I don’t think they can compete 5 on 5 with the Kings or a lot of other teams. they’ll excel in specialty situations for the most part.
I think we’ll turn it around quickly. It may be the 1st bump in the road this year, but it won’t be the last. You got to go with the ebb and flow even if it’s only 48 games.

I’ve been watching other teams games as much as I can since the season started. And I can fairly say that the Kings are one of the most unprepared teams in the league so far. It’s true the other teams are gunning on us, and it’s been just 3 games in. But being physically unfit is easy to tell with watching only 1 game. How long does it take to be normal fitness? Do we have time for that in 48 gae season? The long rest may have been costing us but at the same time they had a long time to prepare. Being ready for the action is completely up to each one of them. I say we should not wait for the guys to come back but bring the guys who are prepared and ready to go.

@nykingfan, Look at what the Los Angles Angels of Anaheim did last year…didn’t bring up their prized talent from the minors until almost a month into the season by which time they had already given up a lead that they never were able to overcome. that talent in the minor, Mike Trout, went on to win the rookie of the year and almost won the MVP award for the AL. I say why leave talent down in the minors if they are ready for the big show.

Somewhere, Alan Iverson is happy….”Practice? We talkin’ ’bout practics…”
On a more serious note, what does DL do with his top forwards that appear to be still in a funk? The only guys with any type of jump are Clifford, Fraser, Nolan, Carter, and maybe Stoll. The rest, well, you could notice how very little Bob Miller mentioned their names since they didn’t seem to be touching or doing anything with the puck.

I thought the post said extra practice today and that made sense to me, now I’m left scratching my head.

With this season being a bust anyway (dang, most teams need 48 games just to get in synch), why not shoot for the cellar? We’d get some better draft picks, and in the meantime we could trade off attractive bench decorations such as Bernier, Gagne, Penner for some scoring punch and a few more higher draft picks. Don’t think that Deano isn’t secretly wishing my 2013 Season Death Wish, too. Sometimes you have to plant a few dead fish in order to renew the crops…Tonto!

Buck up Kings fans!! We have the Cup, we are the Champions. Sure, we are starting slow, but when have we ever really started hot? Sure, we are a mediocre team during the season, but we turn it up in the playoffs. Sure, we are on a losing streak right now, but better early and finish on a high note with a win streak at the end of the season. All is not lost! It is merely Kings hockey, but with a twist. We have more than a “hope” as we have had in past years. We have an “example.” We have the Cup. We have been there, and done that, something several other “prominent” teams cannot say. The regular season means nothing other than weeding out the completely weak and setting up the playoff schedule. Keep the faith, keep the support, keep the Cup!!

It is simple not acceptable that players like Richards, Penner, Williams, Carter, Brown and Stoll do not perform with the same intensity they did in the playoffs. If they’re injured, get off the ice and get fixed. If they’re out of shape, get benched or demoted till you get in shape.
I trust DS will be making more embarrassing line demotions like he did to Penner. There is no effing excuse for even the slightest shred of ‘coasting attitude’ from anyone in a shortened season.

If they gave up their ice time today, I don’t care–they should take a tennis ball, find an alley near the hotel, and work on the power play.

@Robert R, just passing the ball to each other and having the guy keep the ball on his stick would be nice, these guys can’t keep the puck on the stick. Brutal so far. Did you all see Sutter telling the guys early on when they couldn’t get the pp going. He was telling to settle down. They are acting like a bunch of spazz’s out there.
