By The Numbers…

Here are some notes heading into tomorrow’s game vs. the Coyotes.  The last time the Kings were in Phoenix was Game 5 of the Western Conference Final…and we all know how that turned out.

-The Kings have earned points (6-1-2) in eight of their last nine games vs. the Coyotes (since 1-22-11)…The Kings have earned points (2-0-2) in four straight at Phoenix (since 1-22-11)…This is regular season only.

-Kyle Clifford has points in all three games and has figured in all four Kings goals this season (1-3=4).  The three-game point streak is a career high for Clifford

-Jonathan Quick has stopped 65 of 70 shots the last two games (.929 spct).

-Anze Kopitar has 38 points (10-28=38) in 39 career games vs. Phoenix.

-Dustin Brown is four games played behind Bernie Nicholls for 10th overall in Kings history.  Brown is scheduled to play in his 600th career game (all with the Kings) Monday vs. Vancouver.  Brown has also played in 271 straight games.

-Rob Scuderi has played in 219 straight games.

-Jarret Stoll is four games away from 600 in his NHL career.

-Darryl Sutter has coached 912 regular season games, two behind Toe Blake for 25th all-time in NHL history.

-The Kings are 13,359 in attendance away from 25 million total (regular season plus playoffs…NON neutral site or European games).  They should hit that milestone Monday vs. Vancouver.

    * Kings are 0-19 on the PP, tied for last in the league.
    * Yotes have 15 goals in 4 games, second in the league.

If the Kings forwards and the PP don’t wake up soon, this season will be a tough uphill climb.

Jeebus, Chicago has 17 goals in 4 games! San Jose has 15 goals in 3 games and St. Louis has 14 goals in 4 games. These are the teams the Kings are going to need to beat at some point and scoring 1 goal a game won’t cut it.

This team just won the cup. The majority of players are still very young. Just because you won the cup doesn’t make you any more prepared for the next season. If anything winning the cup will be a hangover since 29 other teams didn’t and are all coming after the Kings hard.

Give the players 10 games to get their legs and game together. Get Willie back and find sometime to practice the PP.

JQ looks in mid season form…he was the one player I was most concerned with.
Kopi thankfully looks ok and doesn’t appear the injury is a factor…but lets see?
DD looks more ready than I’ve ever seen him.
Brown carried this team on his back mentally and physically for many years…no excuse, but its hard to relight the fire. Give him a few more games. Doan might take care of that
    Clifford…man on fire!
King, Penner and especially Richards all look slooooow. Not sure if he is 100%

The Yotes will be a good test. Expecting fireworks tomorrow night!

    -no effort
-he should own the ice with his size, but no
    -most nights he takes off
    -no backcheck
-low points for such a big name player (over rated)

    PurpleRocks Reply:

@harty, I totally agree with you. Although it was cool to be able to say we brought back the same exact team from last year since it’s so unheard of I was actually disappointed when they re-signed Penner.

    [Reply]

    goldielocks Reply:

    @harty,

If you know something abut hockey, you should know how special Penner’s talent is. He’s not a fast skater for sure but he is a quick one. For example, diagonal skate in front of everybody to create the scoring chance. Yes, we saw this many times in the playoffs. If he is that slow like you claim, how is it physically possible? And how many others can do the same thing? Name more than 10 players.

And his another unique skill is he can play by not playing the puck. Watch the video from Carter’s first goal in Phoenix series, and Nolan’s goal in St. Louis series. It’s a hockey IQ which is very high to assess the situation in a split second, and more importantly being unselfish.

You are free to hate him but all those points you mentioned are so typical. Just because he is big, that doesn’t mean he has to be physically dominant. Especially when he has incredibly soft hands, he doesn’t have to be the wall to show his butt to goaltender all the time or the wrecking ball to crush people.

And no, I’m not related to the big guy.

    [Reply]

    Neil Shafton Reply:

@harty, Yeah Tim: Like people keep saying if you knew hockey then WTF does that mean anyway?

“If ewe knew hockey” I mean its not like you have a kid playing what was it Midget AAA, or that you have a relative who just had their name inscribed on the Stanley Cup, or that your neighbor is leading the Kings right now in points.

Seriously Tim, go and buy a book or something on hockey because Dustin Penner is just awesome and if he wasn’t on the Kings he’d be playing in some league over in Dubai or something.

The same can be said of Gagne, sorry but he’s not the same player anymore and his significant drop in production the past 3 seasons is partially because of post concussion related issues and physically and mentally he’s not the same player anymore.

But what do I know, I mean lets trade Bernier now because we need Martin Jones to come up and sit on the bench.

I keep reading how Toronto needs Bernier and those experts who post on TSN think Komaserek is who the Kings can get for Bernier straight up. Or how about the Bernier to Montreal for PK Subban, because you know the Kings need a headcase like Subban who is the next coming of Bobby Orr.

Seriously Harty must be the air in Ayr causing you hate on Penner!

    Happy New Year Tim!

    Brown: 0 goals, 0 assists -5

    Top 2 lines totals:
Grand total of 1 goal and 1 assist and a collective -18.

    Bottom 2 lines totals:
    2 goals 5 assists and a collective +9

And that is with Clifford helping the top 2 lines by adding a wonderful assist to Carter. The only single tiny positive thing that happened to the top 2 lines was created by Clifford.

Wonder what Gagne did to NOT be earned a spot on the top six in Oils game??? He and Richards had that pretty give and go against Chicago which almost turned into a goal. Has DS lost hope in him already????

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@rogiesbackup, I believe it was not about what Gagne did or didn’t do, but what Clifford did consistently for two games and it proved to be the correct call imho. Clifford is playing better than anyone on the team except for Doughty. Doughty is playing in mid season form, but his partner is playing like he is still in training camp.

    Duncanz Reply:

@KC13, It could’ve actually been a combination of rewarding the deserving Big Red for his solid start to the season and sending a message to the other left wingers; Penns, Gags & King that if you aren’t producing you might drop down the pecking order.
DS already stated that DP & SG either play top 6 or they don’t play at all but it’s got to be a little galling for two skill guys like them to see a recognized depth forward not only hop above them but knock them out of the lineup altogether.

    [Reply]

    rogiesbackup Reply:

@KC23, I mean giving Gagne only 1 game is hardly giving him a chance, at least put him in the line-up!!!!

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@rogiesbackup, Bottom line. Our bottom two lines are not the problem and DS is not going to punish any of them while giving top forwards not ready to play anything they don’t deserve. I’m 100% behind DS on this issue.

Interesting reading tsn.ca blog about the King’s game. You’d think they won the Cup. Never seen so many Canada fans get so psyched about beating the Kings in the 3rd game of the season. I’m betting the Kings are going to destroy the Oilers the next time they meet.

Vancouver making short work of the Ducks. Monday’s game should be interesting.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@KC23, It’ll be Canucks 3rd game in 4 nights (@SJS on Sunday) so Kings have got no excuse not to outwork them, having had the more forgiving schedule going in.
They do look really fast and sharp on the counter though.

    luc20rules Reply:

@Duncanz, Shorthanded on D even if Mitchell does get back he would likely not be good for more than 20 mins until he gets into game shape. Even if the Canucks are tired they seem to be working with better timing. Unless the Kings really improve over the next 3 days that maybe a tough game to watch on Monday.

    KC23 Reply:

@luc20rules, It’ll be a couple of weeks back in the line up before Mitchell is Mitchell. We have a long way to go before he’s really back.

  29. HockeyNerd says:

I’m taking the middle ground here. No the sky is not falling and we weren’t going to go 48-0-0 but there are some surprising concerns. Would not have thought DS would bench BOTH Gagne and Penner and would not have thought the top 2 lines would be playing so lackluster. PP should be doing a lot better based on the talent we have. People are not moving around enough and are not getting shots on the net. And taking a lot of penalties ourselves kind of implies too many players aren’t in game shape and have to trip, hook or interfere to compensate for it. If I’m DL I’m not worried so much about the defense as the fact that either Penner or Gagne HAS to produce on a top 6 basis. If neither can, make a move. Clifford is not the long term answer there.

    [Reply]

    Osaka Reply:

@HockeyNerd, It is the first week of the season, first two weeks of any season you can’t read anything into. I know it is a short season and points are important. Doesn’t change the fact for all teams in the league, don’t read too much into the first 2 weeks of the season.

Why is Clifford not the long term solution? He is the reason DL could move Simmonds. Growing into a second line player like Clowe or Fisher is exactly where I see him long term.

    [Reply]

    harty Reply:

@Osaka, agree Clifford left here all season could equal what Penner, Gagne could do.

Leave him up there for 10 games and see what happens………….

make the 4th line Penner, Fraser, Nolan

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

@HockeyNerd, I wouldn’t be so sure that Clifford is not the long term solution. No one can say that of a guy so young. You probably have the odds in your favor, but certainly not a fore gone conclusion. Some guys (especially bigger power forward type players) take a bit longer to mature.

    luc20rules Reply:

@granados13, That would be a bit too late for this years chances. I am inclined to think this team won the cup last year and deserves the chance to defend it, but DL built the Kings to be a dynasty and I don’t think he will sit idlely if it becomes clear that a player or 2 has become content with just last years championship.

on Brown Last games missed were 2 games in Feb 2009. 24th and 25th.
Starting from there. Game #61 in the 08-09 season…… (2008 was his first year as Captain)
2008-2009 22 games No Playoff appearance.
    2009-2010 82 games 6 Playoff
    2010-2011 82 games 6 Playoff
2011-2012 82 games 20 Playoff (BTW, They won the Stanley Cup!)
    2012-2013 3 so far…..
For 271 Adding playoffs makes 303

Marcel Dionne holds the Most Consecutive Games played at 324.

For Brown to make 325 because of the lockout, he has to play 100% of this season (45 games to go as of now) and the first 9 games of 2013-14.

While I would be bummed to see my favorite Kings player of all time lose a long standing record, I will be happy to see my Second favorite King to do so.

    Brown must retire a King.
I know there are haters out there. Under his captainacy the Kings only missed the playoffs his first year, but he brought the cup to the Kings.

Fitting for 15th Captain of the Kings, youngest Kings captain and 1st American Kings captain.

    GO BROWN GO!
    GO KINGS GO!

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@Mars, Agreed, I actually think it will be Browns play that kick starts the Kings. Offense will come and go, but Defense is effort and strategy. We know the system works so at this point its the effort. I think that to many opponents have found themselves free and unchecked in front of the net. Quick has played great the last 2 games, but we need to score at least 2 goals to expect to win. We won’t win that many 1-0 just because teams will always keep pushing hard if they think they can win. A 1 goal lead just won’t demoralize a team no matter how good Quick is playing.

    CNL Reply:

@Mars, Completely agreed about Brown staying a King forever. However, Marcel Dionne already lost the consecutive games record. Kopi was at 330 in the game he broke his ankle in 2011. So, Brownie has to shoot for 331 (and then some more).

@Osaka, Clifford has earn his spot on the 2nd line, but at the moment Brown is certainly is not earning his spot on the first line. So much talk about Clifford (top scoring forward on the team with the best plus minus) being on the 2nd line and no talk about Brown being -5 on the top line LW.

Brown needs to get his act together … now.
