The Oilers tied the game in the waning seconds of the third period and Sam Gagner won it with a power-play goal at 3:01 of overtime, as Edmonton came from behind to beat the Kings 2-1.
Edmonton pulled their goalie late and Nail Yakupov tied the game with 4.7 seconds left in the third period. This came just after the Oilers had a goal disallowed due to a player in the crease.
The Kings finally opened the scoring 13:26 into the second period on a breakaway goal by Jeff Carter, his first of the season. Kyle Clifford earned an assist and now has points in all three games this season.
Power plays were the name of the game in the first period, but neither team could capitalize. The Kings had five power plays in the opening frame, including a full two-minute five-on-three advantage. Edmonton then had three straight power play chances, including a two-man advantage for 1:48.
Goaltending match-up: Jonathan Quick vs. Devan Dubnyk
Scratches: Kings (Gagne, Penner and Bodnarchuk), Oilers (Hordichuk, Potter)
Power Plays:
Kings: 0-for-8
Oilers: 1-for-9
GRIT!

@Gustavo, Kompon or Payne doesn’t make any difference. You have to have heart and guts to play this game and the Kings don’t have neither. If the rest of the team played like the fourth line is playing, they would be undefeated. The Kings have to reach down in Manchester and give some of the kids playing time in the NHL before the season is a total loss.

@xeropoint,
You’re nuts or not watching the games.
They have improved a LOT since Game 1.
Game 1..there was NO energy and no execution at all.
Game 2…there was some energy and no execution at all.
Game 3…there is a lot of energy and execution defensively! but, no execution offensively.
Also, Quick has improved tremendously each game as well.
Things will come together soon. I say middle of February is when all the teams will look like the teams we expected to see before the lockout.
[Reply]
We need to move the puck faster as well as the pucjk movent, especially with the man advantage. I believe we can play!

Gary Reply:

@Kingstane9,
just keep in mind about the lockout. Most of the Kings were sitting around and just practicing. The few that were playing in real games were mainly in Europe on big ice. That makes for bad habits on NHL surface.
I’m sure the team knows what they need to do. But, it will take some time for them to execute correctly.

@CanadianKing, I completely understand Richards laziness but having said that Stoll needs to wait till he’s at least within 10 feet of the bench. With only 4 players on the ice the chances are better that the puck will come right to you which will make it even easier for the refs to call to many men!

Stuart Reply:

So much to take away from this game.
Richards should be benched, he has been a total no show since the season started and that lazy skate back to the bench was the icing on the cake. Bench this guy now!
Clifford is our best player out there and the 4th line is the only line doing anything.
Kopitar, Brown, Richards, Carter(Carter’s goal was ALL Clifford), Williams TOTAL NO SHOWS!!!
I watched 4 Kings players skate right past an Oiler with the puck on the boards, the Oiler then skated right up the ice and set up a major chance at a goal only Quick’s amazing save kept it from going in.
Yes the PP is horrific but the bigger issue I see is the majority of the team play like pansies, no heart, no grit, no hits…Flyers are losing too but you know what, the other team sure doesnt have any fun winning against them…they are looking to hit everyone that touches the puck…I can stomach losing, its hard to stomach not willing to stick your nose in the corners, follow through with a check, or drive to the net…its a major problem with this group.
Also losing Mitchell and Greene’s nasty attitude on the blue line, and in front of Quick is a massive loss for this enemic team.

@Paul, I agree with a lot of what you are saying here…It is up to the top six to make the impact…and we have not seen that as of yet…it’s as if they think they should be respected now or something…whatever they are doing isn’t working…time for a new approach

THe Kings look like they will set another record for the only stanley cup winners to go the next season without winning a game.

On a night where our PP goes 0-8, Jamie Kompon’s “system” in Chicago leads to 3 PP goals in a 3-2 win.

@bmova, Jamie Kompon’s system also scored 3 goals for the Kings in last years cup clinching game, but that doesn’t change the fact that it sucked the rest of the season.
Also, doesn’t the Kings PP this season look exactly the same as last season? It looks that way to me.

@CB14,
That wasn’t his system. Prior to the playoffs, DS and Nichols took over and changed the PP system by simplifying it. Kompon was reduced to “video review.”

Kings did not deserved to win, but 10 seconds away from 2 points and loose…PP is terrible. Kompon or no Kompon still same sh…t. They should be ashaimed of themselves. All of them (excluding Quick)!!!! Well, I guess they desided that Kings fans could wait another 45 years..So much for management saying that we will be like Detroit, playing for the SC every year. Amazing, how team can change from one of the best ever,to pathetic loosers. Sutter should do something quick, or this season is over.

At least 50% from last year playoffs. ..They just need kick in a butts from coaches and front office. That what I would have done.

No reason to panic people…if the Kings were capable of doing what they did last year in the playoffs…then I’m not going to worry about a few losses. Sure things didn’t look good tonight…pp sucks…etc etc…let’s wait until the kings are 0-10 before we starting having nervous breakdowns.

no kidding…where is MR…where is Brown…where is the effort, shift in and shift out…
I love my team, but this is not the way you show the league that last year wasn’t a fluke
[Reply]
The problem is not only do we need depth on defense, but we need guys that can chip in on the 3rd line and we need a scoring LW. Our 3rd line may do the right things and play solid D, but let’s face it, they don’t score consistently enough and our top 2 lines aren’t producing. Penner and Gagne in my opinion are not the answer. As the season goes along, if this scoring problem continues, DL is going to have to look to make another big time trade for a high caliber scoring LW. There is not enough time in the season to wait to solve the problem. 3 games in, we know what the problem is, it was the same problem we had last season before the playoffs started and that’s scoring consistently. I really hope these issues get addressed by DL sooner rather than later and I really hope that each and every guy on this team, especially the boys on the top 2 lines, get there butts into gear and start to step it up and put the puck in the back of the net. Plain and simple.

@OCKingsFan, we have plenty of capable goal scorers on this team…we all saw what this team can do when they put their mind, body and soul to it…every shift has to matter now…every game is important…”Validation” should be the team chant now…this is no time to rest on your laurels…sure …I would love the third line to pitch in and score some goals…but the bottom line is, this team is not going to the dirty areas…not sacrificing themselves to get the opportunity to score…nevermind scoring…they are not even making it hard on the goalie because they aren’t getting to the net…nobody!…no one is doing that!
[Reply]
It seems to me that most of the players figured they would just pick up where they left off last year without really having to put forth maximum effort. Well, reality check time….
[Reply]
Clifford looked good again. He made a few nifty passes, including that assist to Carter. Carter and Richards seem to have more time and space out there, and Carter was doing good things with the puck. MR is still a ghost.
Kopi is not shy about contact, but still doesn’t show that jump and separation gear.
Nolan did exactly what he’s here to do all game.
Muzzin looks like he belongs. I think he’ll stay when Mitchell comes back. Voynov and Martinez look good. Doughty is playing like he did in the playoffs. Scuds seems to wilt a bit late – early season conditioning issue.
Quick’s best game so far. That is very encouraging.
[Reply]
If there is one true fear I have with this team right now, it is that they seem to believe they can “turn it on” when they need to. Not so, boys. You should have been playing hard from Game 2. The “vets” are surprisingly the problem. Richards stroll to the bench. Still going out early. Stoll not winning face offs. Brown & Williams are AWOL. We’ll see if the Captain is going to close the door and name names – his being first.

13 has points in every goal for the kings this year. Very happy for him.
The rest of the team is just like last year. I am surprised that so many are surprised by the lack of goal scoring. They want on one of the best playoff runs EVER but did that really make everyone believe that it would continue for this season too?

Dear Stanley Cup Champions, You have my blessing this season to play however you want and obtain whatever record you want as long as you make the playoffs. I do not want to listen to those “people” on NBC or ESPN or NHL Tonight utter the words “fluke”, “hangover”, or “one hit wonder” all season. I know its a short season and the playoffs will soon be with us, just get in and all will be fine. You are the most talented team in the league. Oh, and Mr. Richards? You go ahead and keep playing the same way you did at the beginning of last season because all I remember about your season last year was your 2 assists on our first 2 goals in the final game 6. Go Kings Go. TiredOfIt out.
