On all the penalties: “It’s got to be a record for no five-on-five play. That’s got to be a record.”
On his team’s overall play: “Oh I thought we played well…we hit three posts. It’s 1-0 and we had all those chances to make it 2-0…with all the power plays. It’s tough to win on the road.”
Looks an awfully lot like last regular season all over again. Start the Brown trade rumors to light a fire under the teams ass again!

@LB, actually that’s not what he said. He wasn’t hunting and fishing every day, way to embellish. And he said he didn’t go to Europe because he was resting from the injuries he’d received last year. He worked out every day and went to Winnipeg during the week to skate with the Jets. And the whole top 6 isn’t in game shape, not just him. But by all means, make him the whipping boy, ignore the fact that the top line hasn’t produced either. And he wasn’t the one who lost the faceoff last night and was totally out of position when the game tying goal was scored.

These first 5 games is basically like pre-season games. While some of the players, who played during the lockout, are doing fine….Those that didn’t are having a tough time getting back. While I agree that he deserves it, the problem for DS is – you bench Penner and you have multiple options to effectively replace him (Gagne, Clifford, King, Richardson even). As bad as Richards has been, they don’t have anyone else to slot into that spot short of bringing up Lokti.

This is a tough team to figure out. The way they’re playing it’s like the last 20 games of the regular season last year and the entire playoffs never happened. (Thankfully they did) This team looks exactly like they did at the beginning of last season, JQ and nothing else. Yes we hit 3 posts, which means we were close to scoring 3 more goals, but as the old man from the Mighty Ducks movies said, you were also close to missing the net entirely.
The PP set-up the Kings have been using looks exactly like the one they used last season. Not a lot of movement, DD and Kopi passing back and forth to each other before one of them finally shoots and either gets their shot blocked, or it goes wide. I don’t understand why they’re doing the same thing that didn’t work last season with the same exact players.

@CB14,
No, I’m not really back. CB I consider you one of the most knowledgeable people who blog here so I just wanted to share some thoughts….The players are the same as last year but the team is NOT the same team. The league has changed. The tempo of the play is even higher this year than last. This is a trend that has been going on for awhile. Some of the older players like Scuderi, who is still an above average player but just slightly, and JW along with Penner, and Gagne are simply not as good as they once were and with bigger faster players in the league they can’t excel as easily. All of those players I just mentioned have seen their better hockey days.
The Kings absolutely are missing Mitchell and Greene on the PK but are actually a better team without them five on five. Martinez is ready to become a top-two defenseman if given the chance and Muzzin has top-four written all over him if the Kings don’t panic and bury him on the depth chart. DD1 reminds me so much of Ray Bourque and like Bourque, Doughty tends to struggle a bit when attacked by exceptionally speedy forwards like Duschene in the Colorado game- where you correctly mentioned Doughty-Scuds struggled. Doughty will be an all star for years to come and Voynov is also a top-four guy so the Kings have four D-Men 25 years old or younger capable of being top four defensemen. DD1, Martinez, Voynov and Muzzin. The NHL is moving more and more toward D-men who can skate and move the puck. The Kings are in great shape there. BTW, DD2 has been okay. TM destroyed his confidence so he will probably never be as good as he could have been but is proving he’s capable as a seventh D-man.
The Kings need to fix the PP and fast. Yes, it looks too much like last season. Stoll should never be on the PP despite his faceoff ability as he destroys the puck movement and can’t finish. Maybe Loktionov should be brought up to play the PP. He’s the best passer in the organization. Brown has to wake up so maybe Nolan should move to the first line with Kopi and Brown for awhile as the Clifford idea on the second line was exactly what I was hoping for…more agression on the forecheck and going hard to the net. Kopi didn’t look ready in his first game but was better last night and will play better. People are on Richard’s ass now but he’s a player you win with in the end, not one you lose with.
The Kings may not win it all again this season but if they’re smart about the young D-men and bring Toffoli along properly, they can be at or near the top of the league for years to come.
@Puck73, I’m not really back so please don’t start texting me again. Not sure I’ll be posting the rest of the season! Just happened to see some of the games with free Center Ice but probably won’t buy it this year so may not be following the Kings or the NHL when free Center Ice vanishes.

1 point in 3 games is a bad stretch, but it’s magnified because of the expectations and because it’s at the beginning of the season so that 0 in the W column looms large. But the team has played a little bit better in each game. Hopefully, they’ll get over the hump against the Cryotes. That’s the first game against a playoff opponent. Last season when Richards came back from his concussion he spent about 20 games passing to no one, missing assignments and generally being lost.. much like he has been so far this season. Since I’m fairly sure he’s not suffering concussion symptoms now, maybe he’s got a motivation problem.
Stoll, there’s 9 seconds left..I understand Belanger has for a long time been one of the top guys in the league on draws, but cant you at least tie him up a little and not lose such an important draw SO cleanly?
And oh, the memories of the Kings last season making every goalie (including many back-ups) look like George Vezina by shooting the puck right into their mid-section.
Speaking of memories… the 2011-2012 PP is back, especially on the 5-on-3s. No movement, no quick shots… all super deliberate. And when they DO free a guy for a one-time shot with an open look, the pass is always in the wrong place and the guy has to settle it and the opportunity is lost. I’m hoping it’s just rust, but as Yogi would say:
It’s like deja vu all over again.

@tornado12,
If the Kings were the Lakers and had the highest paid talent that was also considered the best line-up in the league, then yes, the expectation should be a division and conference championship. The Lakers were built to steamroll everyone from start to finish (which isn’t happening due to poor coaching and no team chemistry).
The Kings are not the Lakers. They were built for the playoffs. DL put this team together with the intention of winning 7 game series by wearing down opponents and outperforming them with teamwork. We have a couple of great players, some really good players and some journeyman players. No one will ever say that the Kings are the most talented group on the ice. But when they play together as a team and sacrifice for each other, the sum of their talents exceeds the sum of the talents of the superstars on the opposing team.
That is DL’s strategy. It did not work the first 2 trips to the playoffs because we didn’t have the right coach or team chemistry. DL founf the right coach and made a couple of player chemistry adjustments and guess what? Success and a big shiny silver Cup.
IMHO, the goal of just making the playoffs is the right one. To expect this team to turn in a Presidents Trophy type season is not practical. Vancouver can beat any team, on any night, in a 1 game match-up, almost all of the time. Put them in 7 game series, where the other team gets to figure them out and can wear them down, and they fold.
Pride, Passion, Power and the word we learned last year, Grit, is what wins Cups. Just make the playoffs, then let DL’s strategy run from there.
Michael J. Reply:

@DesertKing,
No that I can agree with (the part about Vancouver).
I’m as pissed off as everyone else with the lack of vicories so far, but it’s way too early to hit the panic button and start benching everyone who has a bad game.
They didn’t play a bad game at all last night. I thought in the limited amount of 5 on 5 play, the kings dominated the majority of the tiny little bit of time.
The officials unfortunately had their whistles stuck between their lips and couldn’t remove it.
Most of the penalties were penalties, but you can’t call everything you see. If you do, you end up with a game like last night.
The Kings PP was terribe. I thought the previous game they had good movement on the PP and had quality chances. Not the case last night. Pucks bouncing over sticks..DD played a terrible game. He needs to QB the PP and he do it at all. Did not like any part of Muzzin’s game last night. He’s on the PP unit and I’ve yet to see him put a shot even towards the net. We need a better option on the 2nd pp unit. Mitchell should provide that when he returns.
I hope some people have leearned it’s not the coach, it’s the personnel and the execution. Now you see what Kompon was up against.
The PK was outstanding for most of the night and Quick wasa s sharp as he was during the playoffs. There were good signs in last nights game. Hopefully they carry it over to Phoenix and get the 2 points that they desperately need..if not for the standings, at least for their collective psyche’s.
I liked Kopi’s game last night. It was a big improvment over the previous game.
I’ll continue to drink from the glass half full side of things..It’ll get better..it has to!

Penalties in overtime are deadly–4 on 3 is tougher to kill than 5 on 4. If you gotta take someone down in OT, it had better be to stop a very high-quality scoring chance.

DS summed up the officiating. Awesome! Lackluster play by the Kings aside and two blown penalties at the end, Doughty cross checked from behind and the fans repeat throwing of objects on the ice and the Kings probably still would have found a way to lose.

Everyone knows what they can do, and they can’t make excuses anymore. It ‘s a catch 22 either way. To me, the season so far has boiled down to the damned power play and the inability to finish scoring opportunities. The defense is holding its own considering the loss of the top guys. Quick is playing well.
But come on, zero for forever on the man advantage, with several two-man advantages? WTF?
Same story from last year. Can’t score on the PP to take advantage of what the other team is giving you. Unfortunately, it’s a short season, so there isn’t a lot of time to tweak and try to figure it out. If they get into a longer losing streak, they stand a good chance of not making the playoffs since other teams appear to have come ready to play.

Most players have not played in 7 months. The ones who did played a much different game in lower leagues or overseas on much larger ice. It’s been a total of 3 games people. We have 1 point out of a possible 6. We have a target on our back being the defending cup champs. There is no magical switch they can just turn on a be the team that steamrolled their way to a cup last season. It takes time. Why do you think no team has repeated as champions for so long? We are only 5 points behind the division leader at this point. It’s not the time to panic or throw players, coaches or management under the bus.
The first 3 games have been ugly and player performance is not up to par but the season is not close to being over. For all of you who thought this would be easy, you were sorely mistaken.
[Reply]
Also, Kopi should have taken that draw on the tying goal. He was a beast on the draws last night. Stoll always seems to win draws when they don’t mean as much.
[Reply]
The Kings still get one shot in the zone, usually blocked, and then it’s back out to mid-ice. There’s no sustained pressure. This is on 5 on 5 and PPs. Heck, we had a 5 on 3 last night and Doughty was shooting it from the point. Watch any good 5 on 3 and every shot should be coming from close in with no one in the shooting lane.
And if you want to talk about invisible, how about Brown? In the playoffs, Brown was laying someone out and wreaking havoc in front of the net within the first 5 minutes. Right now, I don’t hear his name more than two times the entire game.
[Reply]
And as many have said, I don’t understand why home fans throwing trash on the ice isn’t a bench minor penalty. That delay gave the crowd time to get really riled up, got the Oilers team time to regain their composure, and put the Kings on ice in a game that was all but over. That entire scene was just ridiculous. And that stands for my team too. If I ever saw someone throw something on the ice at Staples Center, I’d make sure the person got an earful and a visit from security.
[Reply]
We deserved to lose the game last night. When you get as many chances as the Kings did last night you must convert. Simple as that. The lockout hurts us! The Kings sat around with the extra time soaking in the Championship. Some players played over seas and some kept in shape. These first few games were basically preseason games in the players minds. They are still trying to find their rhythm. We look a lot like the team we were last regular season. If we don’t correct our wrongs, we will be the laughing stock of the NHL once again. Can you hear it now… The Kings Championship was a fluke. Thing is we don’t have the time to wait around and sneak into the playoffs. I still believe that we can beat any team in a 7 game series, but these regular season games of relying on Quick will catch up to us. Panic, Hell ya Panic. I DO NOT like to see the Kings lose. Hopefully this Cup thing is behind them and they can focus on this season. 1 win and everything will be back to normal. Not until we see a goal from our PP unit. I’m OUT!!!
[Reply]
When you raise the Cup you essentially have raised the bar.
This season will be the toughest in team history. Nobody is taking the Kings lightly anymore. In fact, everyone is highlighting the Kings on the calendar, everyone is measuring themselves against them, everyone wants to knock them off the pedestal. Just showing up doesn’t get you a “W”, there’s no hiding under the radar anymore. The guys need to realize the price they paid and sacrifices they made to win it all.
Every game is now Game 7 of the Finals..drop the puck!

@DEH, Doughty’s play so far has really impressed me as well.. Its almost like he is maturing into the player he is being paid to be. Were mot off to the start we all expected but its the finish that matters.

Team hasnt had practice with the new PP coach..so thats why it looks like last year…also Kopi is not 100 % and we are missing WM and Greene. Have you ever notice if a call goes the Kinks favor that Foxy will comment..”Its Close” He will never come out and say that the Kings got a break… like on the disallowed goal last night….

@neil, Fox is one of the best, but he is paid by the Kings. At the same time he has obviously made it clear to you that the Kings got a break just not in those exact words – which is a lot more than more commentators do…

The Kings are the Kings, no different except for some extra rest, and a shine of a cup past, they gave LA the cup, now its time to move on and so as always yes we are slow starting out of the gate and who knows what will happen, but it was good to see Quick after two games getting back to true form, what a great player he is turning out to be, along with (13 ) and others too, keep going forward boys!
Go Kings Go!
Great to hear and see Jim and Bob and Daryl and Nick again, missed them very much!

@GailWeb, Thinking back to many past seasons…when the Kings start off hot they often end up flat. So go ahead and start flat, because I’d rather have them go through diversity early. Don’t hit the panic button yet. I put my panic button away this season. The Kings finally won the cup after the worst possible first 1/2 of the season last year. It was amazing. They have a cup hangover still. No big deal.

One good thing about tomorrow night in Phoenix, is we might get Labarbara in goal as Smith is injured. If anything can cure the Kings offensive woes it is Labs.

@Jeff_R, Or we might just make Labarbera look like Terry Sawchuk

Thinking about last night’s game and coming to realize that it could have easilly been a 3-0 win and all would be fine once again in the Kingdom.
Some things to consider:
1) Edmonton had half their team playing together in Oklahoma City
2) Some Kings players are not in “game shape”
3) Missing Willie and Greener
4) Kopi played better
5) Quick was awesome
6) the Kings did outplay Edmomnton for most of the game.
I’m not giving up.

Richards, Brown and Williams have looked terrible. Team’s power play has been brutal no movement very stagnate out there. Still lots of games to go but right now it doesn’t look good.

A sad performance by Richards who is still relishing in the hangover mode. DS please sit him along side Penner for Saturday. Scuderi got caught watching the paint dry on Yaki’s goal ….ooops. The special teams look abysmal. Maybe getting WM back will be a settling for the blueline as DD #44 should start his healthy scratch stretch and DD#8 can play his position instead of trying to play all over. Poor JQ rough start and should have gotten a W last night to build on instead of the letdown… Lockout then copout…get your act together.

My issue with this season so far is that you have a coach playing his top players 20+ minutes a night at the start of a shortened season that had very little training camp. Many of these top players have not played in 7 months. The best line so far as been the 4th line and they are only playing 8 minutes a night. I just do not get it. The Kings can roll 4 lines as well as any team in this league, but the coach just won’t do it. If there is a time in the history of sports when you need all your players going, it is now…the start of a shortened season that had no training camp after a very long lockout.
Let me see: Do you think the Kings struggling in the 3rd period of each of the last 2 games has something to do with the legs not being there yet of our top players? Do you think that these top players having played minutes greater than normal has something to do with this late game struggle?
I am sorry but some posters have said you cannot blame DS for the slow start this season. Wrong. He could have done a lot better managing player minutes in these first 3 games and we would have likely had another point or two already.
Please DS… roll 4 lines and you will see a team that can play a full 60 minutes and win most nights.
