Jarret Stoll Quotes From Practice

On things the team needs to improve: “Little things here and there…bounces, getting to loose pucks…it’s timing.  Those power plays we’ve hed.  We have to score on some of those for sure.  We just didn’t capitalize.  We got to work harder for that and be smarter.”

On things the team needs to keep doing: “Everything we did in the first period last night…rolling four lines.  We were skating, we were up on the fore-check.  That’s what we need to do.”

@puck73, When 1 line has been on the ice for all of your teams goals, you have to move those players to different lines.

Sincerly, Leslie Neilsen, and now, Bitter Beer Face guy aka Darryl Sutter.

Like it or not – Penner has to go down, simple as that. And if so, someone has to go UP. It’s a little embarrassing when your #4 Wing is the big gun on the team.

    luc20rules Reply:

@IceGuy, Ducks probably aren’t embarrassed that Daniel Winnek in there leading scorer at 2-0, but then again if the Ducks aren’t embarrassed about the origins of the team well they are likely good about anything.

I made a comment about putting Cliffy on the second line but I think he would outwork Richards and Carter and it would screw up our only scoring line, how about making our 4th line our second? I know…players pride would be hurt….sniff,sniff.

  4. brian spain says:

You don’t need to change anything, if the other three lines work as hard as the fourth line. Lets go guys vacation is over, no time for figuring things out, skate hard, fore check like it the playoffs and shoot the puck. They tend to want to pass too much instead of getting the puck to the net and banging it home. Look at any of the n16 wins from the playoffs and you have your answer to how to win.

@California Royalty, He will play there for at least 1 game. Its a message to the rest of the team play like that guy or your mins are in jeopardy. Carrot on the end of a stick type thing or just the stick?
That said I’m not sure I go that way. I would maybe just insert Gagne or Richardson for Penner to match Edm Speed, and since the 4th line has been the best this year reward them with 5 extra mins shaving 100 secs off the other lines.

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @California Royalty,

Why did Warren Rychel skate with Wayne Gretzky in the 93 playoffs? Skill players often thrive with a big body who can skate and open up lanes. Penner’s effort has appeared spotty, but his linemantes haven’t been moving like freight trains either. Maybe somebody with more consistent effort will bring out more from those two. Maybe Penner is my 12 year old son who needs to learn the same lesson over and over and over.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Kenny44, Penner may be a problem but Clifford is not the solution for it. Yes, your skilled players need to play with big players who can go onto the corners but those big players also need to have a scoring touch themselves, otherwise the chances they get by playing with the skilled players are worthless. C’mon now is Clifford really a regular season 20 goal scorer? And as for your example I can only say Barry Melrose was a lousy coach and did a lot of dumb things like that. Size alone does not score goals, a lesson he never learned.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Great analogy about Barry Melrose. Obviously you were paying attention. And besides….Any coach who thought Sydor was better then Zhitnik deserved to have his Ass canned!

Well, I agree with you Strollsie, it would be nice to capitalize on the PP. It helps to put it on net, so let’s practice that,eh? This rides just starting, but these boys look as disinterested as they did at the beginning of last year. I hope DS can get their attention, and don’t really care how he does it. If some established players get butt-hurt, tough noogies.
    A coupla first impressions:
Where the heck did Penner’s quick 1st 3 steps go that he exhibited in the Playoffs??
Why did Santa ignore my wish to bring Trevor Lewis some hands for X-mas? WHY?
Someone tell JQ that without your top 2 box-out, shut down D men, maybe you don’t charge every shooter and leave the net open behind you.
I’m confident our boys will rediscover their fire and turn this around before it gets ugly.

Well, actually, there were a couple of them, and now there is that Erin whats-her-name, you know, the Pro-Biotic girl. I mean, when your nickname is “Strollsie”, you live on the beach, you can drink more alcohol than a whale, and you have a realy bug cool silver Cup to drink it out of, well hell yea I’ve been scoring.

  21. Dominick says:

It’s a little unfair to be comparing Sutters line changes to Murrays. Other than Clifford everyone else practiced about where they normally slot. Also, I personally don’t see the Clifford move as a shake up or anything. Probably has more to do with an adjustment to that lines strategy and the fact that right now Clifford is accomplishing assignments given to him. Probably won’t be permanent if Sutter uses it like that at all. Murray didn’t change strategies. He wanted everybody to play the same and he mixed the players up to counter different strategies. That’s why he always said “play the same way”. Sutter will adjust.

Good for Cliffy to get recognized for the work and results that he’s had in the first two games. Not quite sure if those practice lines should stick come game time, but Penner definitely needs to take a look at his play in the last game and realize that won’t cut it.

In the last game, it just seemed like the Kings played the first two periods that way you want, but then inexplicably, decided to coast.

And again, what else can be said about the dreaded (or dreadful) PP? Do we have to wait until the playoffs again to see this thing score goals in any meaningful manner?
