    @FKA PakiFro, I wonder if Sean O’Donnnell would be interested in coming out of retirement for a year… On the UFA wire, pickings are slim, but guys like Kent Huskins, Brett Lebda, Colin White, Chris Campoli, and Pavel Kubina who may be available if they haven’t already signed with a team. But we’ll see… Drewiske should be ok to cover for now, along with Jake Muzzin, but some depth will be needed soon.

    So for now, it’s Doughty, Scuderi, Martinez, Voynov, Drewiske, and Bodnarchuk(sp)or Muzzin(?) with Mitchell whenever he is ready to return.

    I don’t see a leadership problem with Greene out, but I am a bit worried about the PK.
    Two guys are going to have to step up – Muzzin (this is his big break) and Voynov.
    They’re obviously not the same style as Matt, but they have to be good D-men to cover his loss.

    And to be perfectly honest, this kind of situation is going to test the Kings desire to repeat.
    Willie and Greene are out. Who steps up? They played like a TEAM to win the Cup, let’s see early if they can play like a TEAM thru early adversity.

    Big question – who gets the “A”?

    A Vet like Scuds, or scare the pants off him and make him grow up, Doughty?

    DesertKing Reply:

    @IceGuy,

    Good point about the Kings winning as a team. They did not play as a team on Saturday, but hopefully the loss to Chicago and now the injury to Greene will galvanize them and help them put that “team” concept back together.

    If it were JUST Greene I would say make due with DD2 and Muzzin. But now we had better trade a couple of spare forwards or maybe even Bernier or Gagne for a good stay at home defenseman. And I think DL is on it.

    @HockeyNerd,

    At this time with quick fresh off of surgery, I would be surprised to see Bernier go anywhere at least for the moment.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

    @jess, Not to mention you’d need a backup and Jones does not seem to be NHL ready. The question is how long is Mitchell going to be out? If its not much longer after all then I think I was wrong and DL just makes do with what we have now. This happens all the time in Hockey and Muzzin DOES have some NHL
    experience. What kind of hurts now is that we lost Hickey.

    [Reply]

    jess Reply:

    @HockeyNerd,

    Jones is pretty damn good, and I believe he has a bright future. But you’re right, would be a stretch to bet on him right now.

  6. CO Kings Fan says:

    I was shocked and aghast hearing Greene might be done for the year. The person this will hurt the most is Quick. I can’t remember how many times Greene stop a shot before it even got to Quicker. I hope he’s not done for the year but that seems to be the prevailing wisdom.

    I say give the A to Donuts and give him a chance to be a leader. He’s going to be here for a long time.

    Is Weber on the last year of his contract?

    Mars Reply:

    @CO Kings Fan, DD could be a good call, But So are Stoll Williams and Richards.

    I think Quick will good, he is a solid guy, maybe he can refer Greene to his back guy.

    Greener will recover well, tough guy, I just hope its quick, that is the pain subsides fast. I herniated 3 discs once, and I NEVER want to feel that pain again. (dont know what Greeners injury is, just going off speculation/reports)

    Finally, I thought I was replaced by Puck73 on here. Greene’s loss is certainly leaving a void in blocked shots and physical play. DD2 is the only guy with some game experience, but, he’ll have some big skates to fill, maybe we need to look a trade, sucks to do that this early. I don’t think you trade Bernier though, too little in the goalie vault at Man.

    [Reply]

    GUSTAVO Reply:

    @Happy Lappy,

    Roloson is available at goal. And despite his age, I’d take a chance on him backing up Quick. Specially in a shortened season. He’d play what…5, 8 games at most?

    [Reply]

    Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com) Reply:

    @Happy Lappy,

    Agreed. Too early to even consider trading Bernier, let alone anyone else. Lest we forget, Quick is still coming off his injury. The last thing we need is to lose a quality backup. Still though, the emotional loss of Greene coupled with his physical style of play cannot be matched by DD2. As you said, the perfect word is ‘void.’

    [Reply]

    jess Reply:

    @Happy Lappy,

    Yup, Bernier ain’t going anywhere.

    [Reply]

  12. GUSTAVO says:

    OK,

    Let the blog bean counters out of the barn so we can start speculating how much cap room DL has to make to get P.K Subban to LA.

    Greene is out for the season, or so it seems.
    Mitchel is still not playing and despite the blatant needs for his play and leadership he should not be rushed to come back. His age is a factor.
    Both Mitchell and Scuderi have to be replaced in the next year or so.
    So why not make a strong move for Subban?

    Sign and trade Subban for Bernier + Gagne? Do the numbers match?

    [Reply]

    California Royalty Reply:

    @GUSTAVO, Bernier and Gagne or Subban??? Price is one of the best goalies in the league. Bernier wouldn’t play at all and Gagne is on his last legs.

    [Reply]

    GUSTAVO Reply:

    @California Royalty,

    Well, if the ‘Canes took West for Stewart + 2 picks, I would imagine those arrogant Montreal Canadiens would be at least just as stupid to show Subban the door for not accepting their offer cheap.

    Subban is holding out and not even talking with the team. Samewith Benn in Dallas

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

    @GUSTAVO, The problem with dealing Bernier is that you would then need SOMETHING to back up Quick. It is doubtful Martin Jones would cut the mustard. And as mentioned above I doubt that Montreal would be interested. There are more than a few teams that desperately need a starter and would be willing to give Bernier a shot at it. They aren’t one of them.

    [Reply]

    GUSTAVO Reply:

    @HockeyNerd,

    I agree that M Jones may not be ready for this shortened season playoff style intensity. But I like Dwayne Roloson. Despite his age he has the experience to back up Quick for the few games Sutter will use him for.

    Thought there were a couple more Defensemen up the AHL rankings than Andrew Bodnarchuk. Hopefully he can help fill the void.
    They can’t panic and trade away talent to fill a void. It’s gut check time and time for some young defensemen to get their opportunity ahead of schedule.

    I don’t know much about him. He’s small, so replacing a body like Greene’s with a smaller body is a little confusing.

    I think Nicolas Deslauriers would be a good call up. Big body who has a similar style to Greener`s

    I used to feel real confident with our D farm, but lately i am thinking we aren’t as strong as we thought/used to be. With Martinez and Voynov already graduated to the big club, Muzzin and Bonderchuk are really the only ‘playable and ready’ prospects which doesn’t include the young guy like Derek Forbort who is still a ways off but is the right play style. Im just scared the type of D we have lost haven’t been sufficiently filled with the right type of play with our callups. Amart mobile, muzzin mobile , bonderchuk mobible ( which is good, but we lack grit). That is our M.O… I agree with moving Bernier or Lokti for defense if that is even possible in the thin market. Everyone needs D.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

    @Michael_DD8, We lost Hickey and that now hurts. But most teams would love to have our problems — we still have Doughty, Voynov and Scuderi and Quick in goal. We have some assets DL can use if he decides a stay at home he wants is available for the right price. I don’t think Bernier is one of those assets though — unless you think Martin Jones is NHL
    ready or that we can sign Roloson.

    @GUSTAVO, That’s overexaggeration. Scuderi is still right there and Muzzin has some previous NHL experience. And Drewiske is perfectly fine to fill in for a while also. If I’m

    That’s seriously like trading Drew Doughty for Colby Armstrong, Travis Moen and Raphael Diaz…

    jess Reply:

    @GUSTAVO,

    100 bucks say bernier is going no where for a while.

    Quick is fresh off of habbing from surgery, not only that, back surgery. If Quick god forbid goes down for a while or the season, Bernier is the best insurance policy we have to tend that net.

    Agreed. They can’t trade Bernie now.

  18. CB14 says:

    It’s not time to panic, but this hurts. Does anyone know what Mitchell’s real timetable is? At the start of camp it was rumored to be a few days, then it became 7 or 8 weeks, and now Waves said he was practicing again. Either way I think you give Muzzin, DD2, and Bodnarchuk a few weeks and see how it goes. If they don’t work out, and Mitchell is still out, then you’ve got to consider making a move with one of our forwards. I wouldn’t trade Bernier unless you can get a decent veteran back-up, and a solid d-man in return. Trading him for just a d-man weakens the team too much IMO, especially with Quick still coming off back surgery.

    [Reply]

    Mars Reply:

    @CB14, Agreed. We have depth. Time to put it to use. They need the training and experience.
    It is not just about the NOW, but the future too. Sadly this is normal. We just dont like to see it happen.

    We will prevail, we have plenty of depth to come up and fill the void. Also it is time for the current D corps to step up and prove their mettle, time to shine guys!

    I hope Dean stays away from Subban as he is trouble both in the dressing room and on the ice. If Greener is out for a lengthy period, the “A” should go to Richards because of his leadership qualities
    and because he plays in all situations, and a true leader in the locker room… Hopefully, Dean is looking around for a D man that we could trade for some of our forwards as we have an abundance of forwards on both the current LAKings and in Manchester..

    [Reply]

  21. HockeyNerd says:

    The wild card is this: how long is Mitchell really going to be out? Not having ONE experienced stay at home defenseman is not a catastrophe. But if BOTH Greene and Mitchell are out DL needs to do something. There are assets who would be useful to other teams that probably don’t have much of a future here. It may be time to use them. Dealing Bernier is problematic though because them you better get a proven NHL backup. DL may just decide to se how DD2, JM and AB handle it. I trust what he decides. This is concerning but truthfully last years relative lack of blue line injuries was unusual. We’ll be OK.

  24. AJ says:

    The injury problems are compounded by the compressed schedule. Working Mitchell back into the lineup when he is ready might mean playing every other game for a week or two. Kopitar is in a better position, both because his injury was not as severe and because he played overseas during the lockout, but exercising caution with him is wise as well.

    The personnel problems are also affected by the compressed schedule. Lombardi should not (and certainly will not) panic and rush into a bad trade. But with every game and every point magnified by the short season and conference-only play, the Kings cannot afford to lose very much ground in the standings before making a move to correct any problems with the composition of the roster. It will be a delicate balance for Lombardi–not moving too quickly but also not waiting too long to address roster issues.

    Finally, trading Bernier is not the silver bullet, and it is most definitely not something that should be rushed into in the first week of the season. Based on the experience of the last lockout, teams will be out of playoff contention quickly and will–in an effort to cut salary going forward–make players available that might not normally be on the market. Moreover, if a contender loses a goaltender to injury or an unexpected contender needs to strengthen its goaltending, Bernier’s value will skyrocket. Those should be the scenarios in which Lombardi should consider using Bernier as trade bait; otherwise, it would be a waste of the team’s most valuable commodity.

    Despite the early season injuries and the forgettable opener, thank God that we’re talking about actual hockey rather than hockey related revenue, salary cap formulae, and how best to divest the league of Bettman’s presence (OK, I wouldn’t mind good suggestions on the last one). GKG.
