Despite some denials, the tweet earlier from @EnricoCiccone is accurate. The Flyers are interested in Roberto Luongo.

@Michael J., Wow. Guess that means they would amnesty Bryzgalov. Why does Philly love overpriced past their prime goalies so much?

    Osaka Reply:

@CB14, They will have to carry both guys until the end of the season right? Amnesty buyout isn’t until the summer right? What a train wreck! I guess they get some cap relief since Pronger isn’t expected to play.

@CB14, You must mean goalies never were. Brysgalov is only 32 years old. Most goalies that are good to great hang around until their late 30s.

@Michael J., Does Vancouver still really think Luongo is their problem? They are crazy up there. He was so mishandled, being named a goalie capt for one, up there that it’s too lake for people not to blame him I guess.

    aKinginVancouver Reply:

@LA_1968, No one blames Luongo as the problem. It’s just time for a change. Everyone in Vancouver realizes their problem is lack of D and shaky offensive.

So happy the season is starting. Also, I thought it was funny that NY and Boston are starting off the season even though we kinda won the cup last year.

Like @Jeff_R stated in the last thread, looks like home opener on Saturday 1-19 in afternoon. Otherwise, they will for sure open on the road and not have a home game for a couple weeks most likely. I predict Cryotes @ Kings, 1pm, Saturday 1-19. I don’t even see how they’ll get the ice ready with the constant parade running through Staples.

Unofficially it’s jan 19 @noon vs Blackhawks. Clippers have Staples at 7pm.

Not confirmed yet as the schedule has not been made official. Apparently the ice was already done. Boards went up today. New glass with 8′ between stanchions instead of 4′.

@Mars, Not me. The moment the lockout began, I stopped visiting this blog altogether. And almost immediately, I noticed an improvement in my quality of life. See, without blogs to read, or hockey to watch, I started wandering the streets, almost aimlessly, at first. Then I picked up the pace and started running the streets, but with a little more purpose. See, what I did not immediately realize that with this change, with all this new “exercise” that was taking place, was that body was becoming strong and lean, that my core strength had greatly improved, and was, in fact, starting to be admired. By all the young gals in my new yoga class, no less. They stretched and bent over and drooled for this old goat of a Kings fan, I’m telling you. Even my wife sat up (okay, she actually managed to stand) and took notice. My normally steady diet of steak and potatoes (roasted, natch) was easily substituted with spinach and tofu. Gone were the beer and nachos. Carrots and celery sticks became the norm. I spurned the pancake breakfasts and started juicing, early and often. I worked out, feverishly. Sweating out all the impurities and memories of the weird twin redheads from Vancouver and the men in green. In fact, my health and my overall quality of life improved so dramatically that I started to get a little freaked out that the lockout might actually come to an end someday. And now, it appears, it has. And I’m freaking out. I’m telling you, woe is me, dudes. Woe is me.

But I think I might get over it. In fact, I think my wife is heating up some leftover steak and roasted potatoes as we speak. Hey, would I waste all my time writing on this stupid blog if none of what I just told you wasn’t true?

I just read an article over on TSN that was Bettman’s apology.
I am sickened. He apologizes to the players, the sponsors and the fans LAST.

No promises of avoiding future lockouts, raising the league to a new level, making up for all of his mistakes. Nothing.

No giving back to the fans. No making amends to the business and lives(workers) forever altered.

We all know of his crimes against hockey, 3 lockouts, staining the Stanley cup with a lost season, moving teams, bad placement, the dead puck era, Selling broadcast rights! placing his name on the NHL logo (really? what a conceded prick) The list goes on and on.

He must step down. If not he must be forced out.
Teams have fired GM’s and Coaches for much much less errors in judgement and bone headed mistakes.

He; while in office, is going down as the worst commissioner in sports ever.

@Mars, At least THIS time, when push came to shove and the season was on the line he exerted a minuscule amount of leadership. I’m more inclined to be upset at the other stuff you mentioned, add to that instituting a ridiculous point system that gives away a total of 3 points in same games and 2 in others, not showing any guts in the 99 finals when that goal CLEARLY did not count by the rules at the time (then mysteriously removing said rules), allowing a despicable display of sportsmanship in the WCF including a slash once the game was over, letting a player make a mockery of the rules by playing the puck from the bench with NO consequences to him, it goes on and on and on. This guys idea of dealing with a problem is denying it exists and taking no action. Hey, where can they pay me 8 Mil a year for that?

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@HockeyPhone, Then if he takes action he gets pilloried for butting his nose in, no?
The Kings and anybody could be pulled up for any number of indiscretions that slip by the officials.
Come on dude, we don’t want the wigs interfering with the game on a daily basis, and by and large these charges (against my Uncle Gary) are grossly unfair.
Which leaves the one gilded in gold fact; that he personally, single-handedly and individually salvaged our hockey season, all by himself in fact, and should receive a medal of valor from the Whitehouse for doing so.
Just watch, other sports will be lining up for his commissionership and wisdom.

    Well?

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @KC23,

Probably won’t renew my tickets next year. With a 10 game weekend pack, I figured I had a good shot at the season opener, since it is on a weekend, I have already paid for 10 weekend games (which isn’t going to happen)and I have had my tickets for several years. Per my rep, nope, the new full and half season ticket holders get preference. Best part – I renewed before we won the Cup, when we were guaranteed the same seats and same conditions as our original agreements. The Kings were on a losing streak, the playoffs were not looking good, and they were begging us to keep our tickets. Lost my seats, lost my priority, lost my innocence.

    [Reply]

    Dave from Torrance Reply:

@DesertKing, I’m in sort of the same boat Desert. I paid my down payment last season for the renewal of my 10 game pack to keep the same seats and then paid the rest in the hopes we’d have a damn season. So now that we are to have a season, I doubt seriously I will get 10 games out of only 24 home games? So I figure they’ll offer up some sort of 5 game, they select the game (s) package and then keep the rest of my money for either playoff preference or a down payment on my NEXT season 10 game pack. Or they’ll be gracious enough to offer a refund for the other 5 games and then I lose my seats. Is it worth it? Won’t get to see them raise the banner, but perhaps I will get to see Brownie blow up one of the sisters again. Lets see how the season progresses. Go Kings Go.

The NHL and owners have made no real apology or redemption efforts towards the fans
No efforts to the business’ impacted, employees whom lost work or jobs,
So while I know I am only holding back 5 ticket and countless mercy sales, I know they won’t
Get thousands of my dollars this season.

Honestly I wish there was more I could do to hurt the owners bottom line.

The bottom line is that whatever tickets you don’t purchase someone else will since every game will be sold out this season, so you are not really hurting anyone but yourself since you will miss seeing your Kings on the ice. You could really stick it to the owners by going to games and not purchasing any $10 beers.

    GKG!

  13. IceGuy says:

In reality, I think the best thing Bettman could do to demonstrate his sincerity now would be to actually fix the system. And by that I mean, change the NHL Board of Governor’s voting system. A “simple majority” of Owners should have the power to make decisions, not a minority.

Fix that, Mr. Bettman, then you personally, and the League as a whole, will demonstrate that the NHL is indeed committed to improving the the State of the Game. No team in the League is more equal than any other.

Do that, and there is a much better chance we’ll not see another “lockout” in 8 or ten years.

    KC23 Reply:

@Michael J., I still like the Richards line to stay intact. Let Loktionov, who has been skating well in Manchester and very ready to go, have a shot. IMHO he deserves it, especially considering his snub of name on the cup.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Michael J., I would temporarily have Stoll center Williams and Brown and Fraser center King and Lewis. Once Kopitar comes back someone would then have to be waived and / or sent down. I’d pick Westgarth since Clifford and Nolan can handle the rough stuff AND be used on a 4th line. I seriously doubt Toffoli will start the season in the big show. If you go with Lokti, which for just a week or 2 is not the worst idea in the world you have to answer these questions: who doesn’t make the team (you’re still a forward over if Lokti starts here) and IF Lokti plays well enough that you want to keep him up which TWO forwards do you let go?

    [Reply]

    Michael J. Reply:

    @HockeyNerd,

I send Nolan down or trade Richardson.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Michael J., A reasonable answer.I don’t think Richardson would fetch very much though, and he’d be good to keep because he can play all 3 forward positions and fill in for anyone on any line (for a short period of time anyway).

If only 1 forward had to go I’d pick Westgarth. Clifford and Nolan can handle the rough stuff anyway, AND they can actually play on a 4th line. If Lokti stuck (which would really surprise me) or another forward made the team (and I’d already let Westgarth go)…. Wow, now it gets tough. I wouldn’t want to send Nolan down (even though I wouldn’t lose a player to waivers that way) because I’d want him around as a “backup” for Clifford to handle the “physical stuff”, lol. That gives me (and DL) a really tough choice (which is I think why Lokti doesn’t stick and Toffoli or someone doesn’t make the roster). I guess that leaves either Fraser or Richardson. I’d probably let Richardson walk. So there you have it and you didn’t even ask me, LOL.

    Save, Hrudey! Reply:

    @HockeyNerd,

Clifford and Nolan can handle the rough stuff?? You did see Clifford get punched to the ice the last few times he tried to “handle the rough stuff,” didn’t you?

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Save, Hrudey!, It’s not about what happens in a fight or for that matter even when, who and if you fight at all. It’s a matter of having enough size and character so that your opponents will not take liberties on the smaller skilled players. How many minutes did Westgarth play in the playoffs. Go ahead, look it up. Teams sure took advantage of our not having anyone around to handle the rough stuff, didn’t they?

Voice in Engineering: I’m warning you dude, beam Quick to these coordinates or I download one million posts of how Bernier is a better Goalie to your computer!

    Kirk: Spock, is he bluffing?

Spock: I do not believe so, Captain. I have accessed the blog files and there are indeed well over 1 million posts of his taking the illogical position that Bernier is a better Goalie than Quick.

Kirk: Can he damage our computers?

Spock: Affirmative. Although our systems are very sophisticated in comparison to 21st century technology they undoubtedly will cease to operate once they parse text of what this “poor man” agreed to do if Daryl Sutter turned out to be a better coach.

Kirk: Uhura, keep trying to reach Duncanz on the blogs.

Uhura: I’m trying sir. The lockout has just ended and there is substantial interference due to people wanting actual information when the post topics are old coaches, Hockey movies, and old interviews.

Kirk: Keep trying to raise him. Doctor, any recommendations besides telling us something you aren’t?

McCoy: Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a blog poster!

[Huge Hockey stick appears on the view screen]

Uhura: My God, what is that?

Spock: Apparently, Mr. Bettman has powers as NHL Commisioner beyond our comprehension. I should have anticipated this Captain. He can allow a player to use a stick even though he is not presently one of the 5 players on the ice.

Kirk: Sulu, set course for the Goal Crease and fast! If we have a skate in it the Goal won’t count.

Spock: Captain, I should have anticipated this as well. Bettman mysteriously changed that rule 14 years ago even though the goal should not have counted. We are about to be slashed.

Kirk: Shields up maximum power! Spock can you make out the name and designation of that Hockey stick?

Spock: I believe it is a “Goalie Stick” belonging to “Mike Smith”. And it is refusing to acknowledge our handshake protocol.

Uhura: Incoming transmission from the Hockey Stick.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@lakingbob(chi), Rich chose to leave out of principal. Since that time the NHL rules haven’t changed and the fact that the Kings have to answer to the NHL hasn’t changed. So unless his (Rich’s) position on whether or not the NHL can dictate what he can and can’t post has changed he isn’t coming back. I’m sure the Kings organization would love to have him back any time. For that matter he didn’t have to leave and probably could have come back during the lockout PROVIDED he compromised his principals. To be fair, this is all only speculation on my part but I believe it is accurate and I think most people here would too.

By the way and for what it’s worth I agree with and admire Rich for sticking to his integrity and his understanding of what he was and wasn’t allowed to do. Screw Bettman and the NHL. Was that interview they deleted that critical in resolving negotiations? Give me a freekin break.

@Jeff_R, Thats what I was thinking, but I know how sometimes they line up the Ex-Philly guys. Ex-Philly Line of Gagne-Carter-Williams especially with a short camp lines that may have played in the past would have better chemistry in theory. One thing I don’t like is Brown going back to RW he just seems to play better as a LW, but you make do with what you have.

    @luc20rules,

I believe that once the CBA is “official” we will be seeing alot of player trades. My sense is that the Kings not only want to repeat as champions but position themselves for the near term future beyond this season. Mike Del Zotto (D) of the Rangers is an unsigned RFA looking for more money than the Rangers can afford next year. The Kings have room if they do not resign Scuds who is a UFA next year. The Kings also need to sign one or both of Martinez and Voynov. I think the Kings might acquire Zot, trade Green back to Edm and bring in Muzz next year to replace Scuds. Just my guess. As far as the front lines, I still see one too many left wings and in my opinion, Gagne and Penner are redundant. I think the Kings would help themselves out alot if they would shop Bernier for a 2nd line right winger who can play behind Williams and Carter as a 3rd line RW.
Then again, the Kings could do nothing and just win again and then have the same lineup again for a three-peat. Hey, I’m just glad that hockey is back.

    [Reply]

    luc20rules Reply:

@UglyinLA, NYR actually are 6 mil under the 70mil cap for this year. So they could sign Del Zotto and just use a buyout-exemption on Wade Redden’s 5.6 mil/yr next Summer(Chris Drury’s old 1.677 mil/yr Buyout comes off the books in the summer too), or just make another decision this summer. Unless NYR’s GM is high on illegal substance I don’t see Del Zotto moving. IMHO. Nice thought though Del Zotto is a nice young player. As for Voynov & Martinez they are very good players, but shouldn’t break the bank as RFAs both together shouldn’t add up to more than 3 mil/yr until they are UFAs.

Dallas I really feel sorry for. Time to move that team to Canada. Good to see some of the players and I do think by having our complete team back will only help our chances. Team that worries me the most… The Blues! Since there is no more Rich, what team worries you Insiders the most. Not what team will win the Cup, but what team will be the Kings biggest foe. Yes every team will be gunning for us, but as we know the Sharks are pissed and the “yotes”… Man this is going to be wild. Oh no not the Wild!!! Well peeps looks like it’s going to be one heck of a season. Hopefully the Kings hire someone to run this blog site. If not we are going to have to do it ourselves. The team that scares me the most is Edmonton.
There’s no denying their talent and most of them spent the lockout playing together in OKC In the AHL.
The only question is their inexperience and maturity level.

    [Reply]

    Duncanz Reply:

@Nykingfan, Edmonton have started rebuilding very nicely. Unfortunately, that building has only been up top.
They’ve been doing it the opposite to the blueprint and you only have to look as far as the Kings to see what that is.
They don’t appear to have strengthened any in defense from last season and definitely don’t have a sturdy goaltending unit of the likes of Quicker and JB that’s capable of standing on its head for a season (even a 48 game season) and keeping the team in the hunt.
Sure they’ll pick off a few of the high flyers and tally some thrilling, pretty goals, but mostly this season will bring more tears and agony to those poor, long suffering Oilers fans.
Thankfully, those days are behind the Kings.

    [Reply]

    Kenny44 Reply:

    @Doubtinz
Why do you gloss over the hit shot free agent defenseman they signed out of college? He’s tearing up the AHL, which is fairly representative of the Northwest Dision competition.

    Duncanz Reply:

@Kenny Hill, Are you talking about Schultz, the guy the luckless Ducks drafted but he didn’t sign?
The guy looks very handy and might well end up doing better in the league than ‘the New Niedermayer’, Cam Fowler.
Shoots plenty, scores Gs & As, good shooting %, healthy +/-, doesn’t get injured.
Oilers certainly haven’t had an offensive D like that in sometime.
Question on him perhaps is he lacks size a little so will he be able to foot it with the big boys? He has 6 PIMs in 34 games which is ungodly low.
As far as the team goes, it’s well and good to be developing all these offensive whippets but they don’t have enough big, tough reliable Dmen so I still see them struggling until they address that.
Although several of them are aging, they have a surfeit of Fs so (unless some of their young D develop fast) they’re going to have to dangle 1 or 2 of those if they’re going to solidify their blue line in the short term.

Anyone who disagrees should look and see how many minutes Westgarth played in the entire Stanley Cup playoffs and armed with that information explain why teams DIDN’T win by taking liberties on our smaller skilled players but will now. TM would have kept him around. DS will not.

If I’m wrong (hey it wouldn’t be the first time, LOL) then it is reasonable to send Nolan down. There is logic to that since he will get more playing time in the minors, he’s waiver exempt, and when someone gets hurt or the roster expands right back up he comes.

@DesertKing, I can see them (the Penguins) being picked high. Fleury won the cup in 09 so he’s not incapable. Arguably that was a deeper team with a better blue line though. But why pick them ahead of the Rangers and Vancouver. Vancouver still has pretty much the same team from the last few years. And all New York did was add Nash after already leading in points.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@DesertKing, Most of the preseason predictions and rankings I’ve read rate us high, but 4th or 5th. I’m kind of not understanding why we aren’t getting more respect. Sure, no team has repeated since 1998 BUT we steamrolled through the playoffs AND have every single person back. Plus unless you believe winning a cup makes you less hungry which I guess a lot of people do the fact that it hasn’t happened in 15 years has nothing to do with NOW. What is somebody going to find to beat us that 4 teams in April, May and June COULDN’T find? How many goals is anybody going to get against Quick and our deep defense? Why would a team that has Gagne healthy and Carter the whole year suddenly regress to the silent offense of a different coach? I’m sorry, but the experts are NOT the experts here. I can understand picking Vancouver or New York ahead of us, they have deep rosters, did extremely well last year, and haven’t lost anybody major. But St. Louis? Pittsburgh? Boston? Washington? Chicago? Please tell me what those teams did to improve, in fact Pittsburgh lost a key player (Staal), Boston isn’t going to have Thomas, Chicago has very shaky goaltending, St. Louis is NOT going to lead in goals against again, and Washington….I don’t see what’s so special about them. I think these experts get “star struck”. They like Crosby, they like Ovechkin, they like the Sedin Twins and they look past the DEPTH that REALLY makes teams win, the 3rd and 4th lines and the 5th and 6th defenseman. We don’t have a better top 5 or 6 than anyone but we sure as heck have the best TWENTY THREE players. And these clowns don’t see it.

@HockeyNerd, That’s the answer to the question you asked, but if I were to wager (which I don’t) I believe it will be New York. The best record on the east last year and then they add Nash. Their blueline isn’t as good as ours (nobody’s is despite how much that Button moron has mind controlled everyone) but their forwards and Goaltending is comparable.

Last season ended with a bang, with the Kings pulling off what most hacks described as a “Cinderella Season”. We Kings fans were calling it destiny. Well, we were right. destiny rode into LA town (on a white Arab Charger, no less), and the rest is history. But that was destiny. Now it’s time to focus on the dynasty. The Kings are here to stay. To begin their rule over the NHL. We have the talent. We have the coaching. We have the fans. We have the faith. We have GOD on our side! Okay, maybe that’s taking it a bit too far, but you get the general idea. It is our time. Let the reign begin.

@Michael_DD8, I am in the same boat, needing to downsize my Jerseys, The larges are too big.
    Its for a few reasons.

    1) Lockout – More free time to cook better on non game days
1.2) Lockout – Not eating Fast Food/Staples food going to games
1.3) Lockout – Not drinking during games (staples or home
    2)More time on my hands
    2.1) More gym time
    2.2) More me time
    3) After losing some weight and with the lockout, I actually started to try too lose more.
    4) 35 Year stress relief. WE WON THE STANLEY CUP!
    5) Stance: Not letting the NHL and Owners take my money.
……. I am not mad at the players, but the only way I can show the NHL/Owners I am NOT ok with the lockout is to stay home and save my money for something else this short season.
I will return next year. But they lost me for the short season, and it hurts me too. But I feel it is the only thing I can do to actually show my disgust for the lockout.

So if anyone has a Medium KINGS Jersey they are willing to sell, especially the older styles, that are in good shape, let me know. Or some Kids ones too, my boys are 6, 8 and 9.

I know a lot of people are upset at the NHL and Bettman. I am too. In fact, “upset” is way too mild a word. I am livid. But I have to say (and don’t take me wrong, everyone needs to do what they feel is right for them, us FANS were not the ones who caused this) that I don’t see any point whatsoever to any boycott. Why cut off your nose to spite your face? It’s over. It’s settled. Hockey was, is, and will always remain the greatest sport in the world despite what these absolute MORONS who call themselves owners and commissioners have done to TRY to ruin it. They don’t care about the fans and never have. In 8 or 10 years this very scenario will occur again, boycott or no. You can’t “send a message” when nobody is reading the email, answering the phone or looking at the fax.

And worse yet you know who REALLY got hurt these 4 months? No, not us. The ticket agents, parking attendants, vendors and hundreds or probably closer to thousands of people whose livelihood DEPENDS on Hockey being played and DON’T make millions a year. Were they able to find jobs to support their families in an already crowded job market? Are they ALL going to be able to come back? What will happen to some of them if fans DO stay away in droves? Do you really think the NHL will care about THEM?

Yes this is the 7th or 8th time I’ve posted the same thing. It’s well worth the annoyance of having to do it on an iPhone. As I said upstairs, I cannot fault any fan for being angry and feeling like they need to do SOMETHING to make these clowns care about us. But they haven’t, they don’t, and they won’t. So as for me I will be there when I can, buy what I want and continue to spend my hard earned money on the sport. Because it is too great a game to be ruined by owners who think they have to protect themselves from themselves and a commissioner that thinks everyone needs to have a 41-0-41 record and that the way to deal with a problem is to act like it doesn’t exist.

So like you i will be spending my money also. My season seats are already renewed and I can’t wait to add to my jersey collection with new ones featuring the Stanley Cup Champion patch! GAME almost ON!

    [Reply]

    Mars Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Plain and simple for me, they didn’t start on time, had they, even missing camp and per-season I would have been fine, but at this point, they haven’t shown me they care, Bettman’s apology was weak. The owners haven’t said a word. So I am staying away. I will keep my money and not let them have it. It is less revenue for them, the players will not make less.

I doubt there are many like me doing this. But I am not going to just take it. I am not mad nor forcing my opinion either. I feel it is the only thing I can do in protest.

Had I thought of it sooner at the start of the lockout, I would have created a website listing Teams, owners and their business that we could have boycotted. hurting their other products. A day late and a dollar short I guess.

I will gladly go to a restaurant or bar and support the business’ there, but I cannot support the NHL and owners right now. So for me, I am going to watch away from any arena.
It may be a fruitless effort, they are only missing out on a couple thousand from me, but I feel I have to stand my ground on this one. Giving in and going back to business as usual does not feel right for me.

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@xeropoint, A. We steamrolled through the playoffs and everyone came back. Someone has to repeat sometime. How long has it been since everyone came back from a Stanley Cup winning team? In fact some recent teams like Chicago in 2010 lost a HUGE number of players.

What I DON’T expect is that we will win the first 3 games of each series and do as well on the road. And some teams if and when we play them will be very tough opponents. Particularly Vancouver and the New York Rangers. Kings over New York Rangers in 6, with having to play significantly more games this time around.

Incidentally the pressure is on in one respect: we MUST have a much better regular season. We aren’t going to go 10-1 on the road again. We cannot afford to give up home ice in all 4 series.

But don’t worry about Al’s immortal soul. It’s not permanently confined to the nether world, just down there looking for Russell’s career and the Kiffin contract.

I must say I’m pretty happy about the schedule for half season seats. 14 games which is over half of the 24 games includes home opener banner raising fun.

    Let the repeat quest begin!!!

@KC23, Agree 100%….Very lucky to get the banner game for half season holders, although there must be some unhappy mini-plan members. Sorry as I can be for them. If not for a few fortunate circumstances last year I would be one…..Very lucky….
