I just posted a comment, but the link I included apparently isn’t allowed, so it’s in moderation land. Who knows how long it’ll be there, so I’ll write it again without the link.

According to Forbes, the NHL made $250 million in profit last season. The top earning team was the Maple Leafs with 81.9 million in profit, while the Coyotes were at the bottom of the league with a loss of 20.6 million.

You remember in the current CBA negotiations how the PA wanted significantly more revenue sharing between the teams, 260 million total, while the league didn’t? Well, the Maple leafs made more in profit, 81.9 million, than the Islanders took in total revenues, 66 million. But no, we don’t need more revenue sharing.

I’ve heard of alot of athletes being charged with a DUI, but this one is special. Detroit Red Wings prospect Riley Sheahan was pulled over in Grand Rapids Michigan and registered a .30 on the breathalizer. That’s nearly 4 times the legal limit for an adult, but he isn’t 21 yet. The .30 blood alcohol level means he was being charged as a “super drunk”. The 20 year old either borrored or stole his 23 year old teammates id, also a Red Wings prospect, and claimed it was his own upon arrest. And to top it all off, he was wearing a purple Teletubby outfit. It doesn’t get any better then that. :)

But, he did forget Bettman and Owners want to crush the players spirt. Personally, I am beginning to think Union decertification is the route. The anomosity that has developed will likely lead to it playing out in the courts even if the NHL offers reasonable deals once its in the courts. I won’t be loosing any sleep if the players get paid 70 to 300% for the lockout term. Bettman and the owners have earned this in my book.

The trade of Larry Murphy was a real low point in the Kings history. LM was a great player that could play in any era & was the type of player you build a team around, not trade away.

Regarding the lockout, at this point I just want the season cancelled. Screw both sides this year. I really don’t want to be part of a bogus 40 game season cash grab by these you know whats! Cancel this season & work on a deal that is longer than a measley 6-years. We fans should not have to even think about any more NHL labor issues for at least a decade!

wow… haven’t chimed in in a while…but i see, it is business as not as usual…where the NHL.com doesn’t have any news about the on-going lock-out…it, along with NHL network and other major sport networks…just a blarb on the bottom line about how mediators have concluded that both sides are too far apart…so obviously, the NHL is not a big enough major sport to warrant a huge amount of coverage on labor disputes everyday, like what happened in football or in basketball recently…For this, I have stopped trying to pimp the sport…for this, I am ashamed that the sport I love so dearly has such a hard time playing the game at the highest level…the only level, in my opinion, that makes this sport a spectical…ie,…the only level to watch…

…so, I am left with horrible whl games on NHL network…or, when they are supposed be showing Stanley cup action from last year…I get to watch the Caps and the Rangers…or the Devils and Florida…or even worse…the year before…when Boston won it all…Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t the Kings win the Stanley Cup this year?

…and that’s just it…I am still waiting for that banner to go up in Staples center…and still I am waiting…That will close the book on that chapter so the Kings can go on a write another…but because of labor strife I am left here to sit and ponder…and when I ponder i think things like…”why do I even waste my time caring about this”…what’s in it for me? NADA…I am the ultimate pawn in this game between millionares and billionares who need to take their collective heads out of their arses and quick…or you will lose me

    [Reply]

  32. Cortex949 says:

So I haven’t been here for a while (other than to read) but I thought I’d add something here to the discussion.

I could go on and on about the lockout and make myself more angry but I won’t. I even stopped looking everyday at noon to see if it has reached a conclusion thinking I was jinxing it. What I will comment on is an observation I just made about the last few weeks of hockey we have seen.

    I (as I’m sure many of you are) am watching the replays of all the kings post season wins which they are replaying on fox sports. Actually I’m putting them on the DVR and watching them each at least twice. I have found that without the stress involved in the first live watching I can see and appreciate a lt of stuff that was missed in the first run through. Here are a few points I hae noticed, any thoughts or opinions are welcome;

Drew doughty was absolutely stellar on the latter rounds both defensively and on the rush. He broke up a few clear cut 2:1s where the opponent didn’t even get a shot off. He directly created two goals in one game vs phx (scored one) just when the team needed it. Also everyone remembers his end to end goal but seeing it again is always fun. I was with everyone when they were calling for more from him early on in the regur season but I really liked his game in rounds 2-4.

Second point is how good Trevor Lewis was throughout the playoffs. He really played like a player 30lbs bigger than he really is. He took a bunch of HUGE hits to make plays and lost some blood on more than one occasion. Also I must have been watching one of the games vs phx in a bar with no sound because I just heard something the announcer said for the first time. He was quoting Shane doan (I know I hate him mostly too) saying that he really likes “this Lewis kid”. Good to have a compliment from a veteran of his skill level (all antics and poor sportsmanship aside).

On the negative side I noticed a few too many lazy or “wishful thinking” plays by Richards and carter that led to outnumbered attacks for the opponent. I play in winter league myself and have for years so I know that sometimes you have to take a chance to make that perfect play. I also realize that with how quick was playing its sometimes a risk worth taking but I just saw a few too many that looked lazy. Hopefully when we get back on the ice (probably 2015 hahah) they will be back to their old scoring selves again.

Any thoughts from whoever is left here?

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Cortex949,

Reference DD, yes, he showed he was worth the big contract.

    Reference Lewis, completely agree.

Reference Richards and Carter, they brought us just what we needed, great offesnive capability with just a touch of unpredictability which doesn’t always work, but works more often than it doesn’t. When you have the best goalie in the game and the best defense in the league behind you, you can afford to try some “wishful thinking” plays and I have a feeling that DS told them that.

    [Reply]

    Stuart Reply:

@Cortex949, Agree with your comments but must add:

Dwight King was beyond his years in a lot of those situations. I’ve been watching those games like one a day every day and his puck possession and decision making was outstanding.

AMart was more physical than I had ever seen him.

Greenie was his most determined… i enjoy watching our 3rd pairing rough people up!

Kopi was a beast in all zones!!! laid the body all over the place and took some big hits as well. His passing and defense were top notch!

as I watch those games I find myself marvelling at all the little things done by so many p’ayers that were done the right way. so many little chips, or seals, or sticks in lanes…

overall, such an impressive run, and if it turns out to be the last playoff in NHL history, SO BE IT!

Needed a day to think about this. The passing of David Courtney is another tough blow to us fans. After having to go thru this lockout, the resignition of Rich Hammond, and now the passing of DC, it is really starting to rain on our championship Euphoria.

Growing up in So Cal in the 1970′s. John Ramsey was an institution around here. He was the PA voice of The Rams, Lakers, Kings, Dodgers, and Angels…He was everywhere! His voice was so iconic, kinda like John Facenda of NFL films. I honestly didnt care for Courtney when he first took this gig in 1989. But he grew on me more quickly then I would have imagined, and now, like Ramsey, I cant imagine a game without him.

A big regret now is not listening to him when the NHL resumes, in particular on opening night when the Kings raise the banner, and receive their rings. My condolences to his family and friends, and the many Kings, Clipper, and Angels fans who will truly miss his voice and presence.

Any speculation as to who is going to replace him…..at least for the Angel’s season?

Larry was a very gifted player who fit in well with all the Kings and I think raised them all to a much better game. I was really sad when they traded him for no reason, Maquire could of given him a better offer but the NHL would not of supported it. I’m happy Larry is still with the NHL in his capacity in Toronto.

no offense to NICK, DARYL and JIM….but…

not having a separate thread on the passing of MR. COURTNEY so that we, the fans, can pay proper tribute to him and his remarkable career is unacceptable…

i realize that there’s a gag order stifling any NHL employee to talk about the lockout…but this has nothing to do with that mess…this is solely a humanity issue, something that deserved this site’s attention…

i cannot think of one reason why (other than at the request of MR. COURTNEY’S family) nothing has been mentioned on here by the “editorial staff” about his passing and what he meant to not only the kings, but to the entire sportscasting landscape of los angeles…

i enjoy the fluff/features/podcasts/articles written on here by all of the contributors during this never-ending “ïnterim” blog transition and lockout…

but not acknowledging MR. COURTNEY’S passing on this site is just plain wrong…and very surprising…i just don’t get it…

DAVID COURTNEY deserved better…and so do we, the fans…

this was not a time to bury heads in the ocean sand and pretend that he didn’t mean anything to the organization and fans…this organization is better than the way they have handled his passing…it’s a real shame and inexplicable…

and if the NHL mandated that this site couldn’t even report on one of their own family members passing away, what does that say about the league and its character…?

    it’s very disappointing and disturbing…

Lockout: Sadly, it’s looking more and more like there is not going to be a season. It is good that some outside mediation is being brought in but unfortunately with nothing said mediators suggest being binding on either the NHL or he NHLPA I’m not holding my breath for hockey at this point.

Larry Murphy: It’s easy to “Monday morning Quarterback” this trade some 30 years later and call it a bonehead move but the sad truth is at that time the Kings could not have kept a beachball out of their own net. Something had to be done to improve that situation and Engblom was among the best defensive defenseman available. Now obviously there were other factors (the goaltending was God Awful, Edmonton was in the same division at the time, score first and backcheck only to protect a 4 goal lead was the style of the day) and the trade backfired big time but I just can’t see it as a case of management should have known better at the time it happened.

David Courtney: Wow. So unexpected, he should have had another 25 or 30 years ahead of him. A fitting end that his last Kings game was the cup winner. (And please, please, stop getting all wound up “that there is nothing on this blog about it”. Because 1) Rich Hammond would have been on top of it but unfortunately he’s not here, 2) give it a chance he *just* passed away, and 3) they are allowing US to post which is the most important thing, albeit not the topic of the thread.)

Furthermore if you go to the main Kings website, the news is there and there is a statement. and since this is a blog, we are allowed to speculate and hypothesize – that’s what you, me and mostly everyone else does on here….

as far as not having a full-time person running the blog, i estimate the time to post the same statement on here as they chose to do so on their site would take about 2-3 minutes…i don’t think you need a full-time employee or reporter to handle a single post…

to me, it’s more about respect than anything else…if the kings management felt that its site was sufficient enough to address the loss, i disagree…

we have established a bonafide community of kings fans on here…you know that many visitors solely rely on this blog for their kings information…in fact, at times, more people visit this site than the kings official site…so there’s validity to my stance…

  48. CB14 says:

It appears the commisioners of the 4 major sports keep trying to top each other with their stupidity. First Gary Bettman locks out the players while the NHL owners made 250 million dollars in profit last year. Then Bud Selig allows the Miami Marlins to desecrate their entire team, and what little fans they had, by trading away mostly all of their best players in an effort to cut costs, a year after they moved into a stadium built for them by public dollars under the promise that they would increase their payroll in an effort to try and put a winning team on the field. That promise lasted for about 9 months. Next, David Stern fines the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 because a 4 time champion head coach chose to rest his star players for a game. According to David Stern, a head coach doesn’t get to decide who plays and who doesn’t, that’s the commisioners job now. Lastly, and most sadly, Roger Goddell has decided not to postpone the Kansas City Chiefs – Carolina Panthers game after a Chiefs player killed his girlfriend and then drove to the teams stadium and took his own life in front of his Head Coach and GM. There is no reason to play this game, none what so ever.

    [Reply]

    Michael J. Reply:

    @CB14,

The problem with the Marlins is that the owner’s son is the GM and he is clearly not qualified for the job. I know some people who work for that organization and the agree that the owner’s son is the downfall of the franchise.

The Chief’s thing is difficult. They might have postponed the game until Monday, but it has to be played. It sucks, but that is life in a 16 game league.

Didn’t Penner tweet something about Sterm being the dunbest commissioner? And he knows about dumb commissioners!

    That’s my uninformed statement ;)

    Neil Reply:

@Michael J., agree with Stern….You owe it to the fans(just like the NHL and owners owe it to us to play Hockey)S.A. only comes to Miami once a year….I was looking forward to watching that game till I found out who wasnt playing. Think if Crosby came to town and pitts burgh rested him….It sets a bad precedent in Sports…Imagine if all the Basketball teams started doing that …Lakers in town tonight and Kobe,Howard etc are not playing….At the prices the fans pay you expect to see the stars….

    [Reply]

    DesertKing Reply:

    @Neil,

If Pittsburgh came to town and scratched Crosby for the game, I would actually be happy since I would prefer to see my team win rather the other team’s superstars do well.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

    @Neil, uh, NO.

The only thing the fans are “entitled to” is to see the players THE COACH CHOOSES TO PLAY. What do you think would happen here if say, we had a road game in Toronto and Bettman “ordered” Sutter to start Quick because “the Leaf fans paid good money to see Quick”….. and Quick got hurt and was finished for the season? We’d call for Bettman’s head (everyone does anyway but that’s not the point here) and as well we should!!!!!

The fans do not get to select who gets to play any more than the commissioner does. Sorry, but that’s how it works. If team A feels they can afford to rest certain players when it visits team B maybe team B needs to get it together and improve.

    Neil Reply:

@Neil, It like going to a play…if an under study is performing you can get your money back.NBA is a league of stars and if Iam going to a game ..I want the stars.Could you imagine if you have a son/daughter and went to see Lebron play(and you paid top money and was only once that year he was coming to town)and Lebron was sent home to rest….I would be pissed. The fans support the league and should NEVER be forgotten about…

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Neil, You are comparing Apples and Oranges. That may be what a theater CHOOSES to do. Sports is different. When you bought those tickets there was no promise of a refund if Lebron was hurt. You are guaranteed to see at least 14 players, of whom each team has deemed 7 of whom worthy to play in the NBA. That’s the only Guarantee you ever got and that’s the only guarantee you SHOULD get. Otherwise, you are opening up a Pandora’s box. Who then gets to decide if the visiting team played “enough” of their star players for “enough” time?

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@CB14, I really don’t follow the other 3 sports much, so it’s not worth as much, but I’ll throw my two cents in:

Selig — I do have to say that it SEEMS that you are inconsistent if you are criticizing Stern for doing something similar to what you WANT Selig to do. In any case, I think there are limits to what you can force owners to do (or not do) and its dangerous ground to tread. Of course, usually these same idiot owners WANT rules put in place protecting themselves from themselves. *Sigh*

Goddell — Agree 100%. Absolutely nothing is lost by waiting until people’s minds are on the game. And even if I’m Panthers I want to beat a team because we played better, not because my opponents mind was not on the game.

Stern — See above. Agree 100%. David Stern, you do not coach the Spurs and you do not get to decide who plays. Miami fans, if you don’t like it, take it up with YOUR teams management, get a team together that Sam Antonio will not take lightly next time.

Bettman — Hands down, no contest the “stupidity” winner for ANYTHING he does.

It seems a common thread in most of these cases is that these Comissioners fail to act when they clearly should or rules have clearly been broken and DO act when they are clearly stepping outside their bounds. It does not inspire a lot of confidence in their leadership.

    [Reply]

    Neil Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Let me throw this out…dont know if it is what i believe or not….What you are saying is that the Teams are bigger then any one player. When you buy a ticket…you are buying a ticket to the game and not who is playing….If that is true…then the owners are right in this situation…right ??? Thanks..good conversation!!!!

    [Reply]

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@Neil, I’m not sure I’m following you, particularly whether it not by “this situation” you mean the lockout, the NBA or something else altogether? But yeah, I’d pretty much sum it up that way. And don’t get me wrong — we all want to see the best players we can see and yes, at the very least (and admittedly not having done my homework about this) was certainly a classless move by the Spurs. The Miami fans certainly have every right to be upset, and I should not have implied otherwise if I did.

But the important point I’m trying to make here is AS A COMMISSIONER you can’t go around dictating who you rest, who shows up at arena, how many minutes players play, etc, nor fine coaches for this nebulous “this was not on the best interest of the game” argument. Otherwise you are opening a Pandora’s box THAT NEVER ENDS. How many players can rest? Can you say your star was hurt? How hurt doed he have to be? If you’ve clinched a playoff spot can you rest him then? How close to you have to be to clinching? Rules need to be enforceable, the puck must completely cross the line, the player can only be there for 3 seconds, the stick has to be below the shoulder. Yes, some of this will be subjective, it’s unavoidable, but Stern’s decision was COMPLETELY subjective. And while I don’t follow basketball my understanding is that this is far from the first time he oversteps his authority for no other reason than he felt like doing it. And Bettman — meanwhile I’m still waiting for THAT idiot to enforce the clear completely objective rules the NHL has. Like not playing a puck from the bench, not slashing a player AFTER the game, and not allowing players who commit assault with a deadly weapon — Yes a stick — from ever playing in the NHL again.

Oh and honoring the contracts players signed in good faith too.

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@HockeyNerd, Well I did miss something obvious. The Hear are the defending NBA champions, duh. HockeyNerd you clown I think they have their franchise “together”.

But it makes no difference as far as Stern is concerned. San Antonio’s coach made a decision to rest his players (who were playing 4 games in 5 nights!) so they could be better used in a game he felt they had a much better chance to win. Not only logical, but HIS decision in any case.

But next time I will actually LOOK who the team is before I rant off something totally in left field….

    wow…

nice job getting all that info in one paragraph…

bettman – he’s like the grinch who stole hockey from us…after the 2003-04 lockout, he did allow some good rule changes to come into the game that made it faster and more exciting…he also was correct by signing with Versus instead of ESPN.. ironically…or more like moronically…he’s the architect turned demolition expert, as he is destroying all the progress of regaining the players trust…now, he’s the bullseye on everyone’s dart board…

selig – mixed results…he made expansion possible and made the playoffs more interesting…but he completely ruined an era of baseball by not fighting sooner or harder against the players association to demand mandatory performance enhancing drug testing…selig, to me, is sort of an enigma, in the sense that he seems like he wants to do the right thing, but his delivery is so poor, it makes you want to always second guess how and what he does…

goddell – i think you can safely say now that he has risen to the top and took the title from Stern of the most egotistical commissioner in north american sports…proof…?…the new orleans “bounty gate” scandal was like watching sergio leone’s “the good, the bad and the ugly”, and he played all three roles at all times…also, fining players for wearing a certain type of colored cleat shows you that has learned a lot from Stern on how to be frivolous and petty, always armed and ready to make sure that everybody in the league knows who the boss is…

stern – ahhhhh, “the angel of stern”, as tony kornheiser likes to call him…for years, he was the ultimate commander in chief…the judge, the jury and the executioner…he was the first commissioner to institute what a player dress code…he was the first commissioner to make fining coaches and players for their opinions on the officiating en vogue…he was the first commissioner probably in the history of professional sports that might have actually been bigger than the game itself…as he exits his throne in a year or so, he’s still crafty and probably the smartest man in the room at any given time…problem is, even if he isn’t, he wants to be…and like all good egoist, his smiles get wider and his answers get shorter and the gap between his reasoning and his reactions tow the line of fairness…

the chiefs vs. panthers game shouldn’t be played…period…end of story…wait a day and make it a monday night doubleheader…or even postpone it til tuesday…it’s the right thing to do….

It’s a free country and buy or not buy what you wish. But if you think you are “sending a message to the NHL” by what you did, you are gravely mistaken. They don’t care. It’s people like that greeter who are getting hurt the most.
