War of 1812 “Battle on Ice”

Big game coming up on October 30th, 8:10 pm at the San Diego Ice Arena as the Militiamen, coached by yours truly, will be taking on the Warhawks, coached by Daryl Evans.

In an effort to highlight the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and to commemorate 200 years of cooperation and a peaceful border between Canada and the United States, teams made up of service men and women from the

Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Ottawa (Halifax Class Frigate) and United States Navy San Diego, including personnel from the USS Carl Vinson (Nimitz Class Super-carrier).

Our thanks goes out to all service personnel for their hard work and duty on behalf of the United States and Canada.

Should be a lot of fun!

    The real question is: how does an active duty Navy guy working in San Diego not get any word of this? Huge Kings fan since ’88 and stationed at the Naval Hospital and I PLAY ICE HOCKEY. No word or invite :( When I was on the USS Nimitz we had a team and played in Mira Mesa but not much since. Sad.

    Question: Why are you ‘highlighting’ war? This glorification of war…death and disease…is grotesque IMO. Especially juxtaposed next to the previous Children’s hospital post, which aims to help preserve life, not destroy it. You can’t have it both ways guys.

    It’s not surprising that nothing was even mentioned about the Indians who were devastated by this ridiculous and unnecessary war. This ‘militarization’ of hockey is very disturbing and has no place on the ice, let alone this blog.

    @Darrell,

    We, the US were fighting the British Empire not Canadians but the British were to busy fighting a war against France so it was only defense at that time. 1812 was the year Napoleon invaded Russia with much dismay and he was gone in by 1814 which was the year Britain went on the offensive to form the border. British support of American Indian tribes against American expansion was also a big reason for the conflict.

    I just hope they don’t play the 1812 Overture which clear includes the anthems of France and Russia.

    BTW, just think, if the Yanks had won would we even have hockey….

    @Paul Armbruster (KingsNewsDaily.com)

    Sorry, “calm down” was just a quick turn of verse. Reference war, it is fought for a multitude of reasons other than politics, specifically religion, ethnic conflict, land acquisition, and economics. The War of 1812 was strictly about economics with a sprinkle of ego from the British monarchy. It is very well documented that politics had nothing to do with it. Fortunately this blog doesn’t allow political or religious discussion, which is why it is the only one I participate on. Everyone here loves to talk about the Kings and hockey. Unfortunately, economics and egos are preventing us from enjoying the thing we all love, Kings hockey. Hopefully the economic and ego war between Bettman and Fehr will end and we will go back to being hockey fans. Support the military men from both nations, let them play their hockey game, let their family, friends and fans enjoy their game, and hope that the idiots in Toronto figure out that fighting over $$ is a waste of time and $$.

    NHLPA’s going to have a conference call at 5PM. Daly said NHL is not ruling out phase-in option. So the question is, can PA make it closer to ‘make whole’? If not, the whole season in jeopardy.

    [Reply]

    Neil Reply:

    @goldielocks, It seems like they are close..But they NEED to TALK!!! 50 50 is in the talks…Its the Make Whole that is now causing the problems….Owners need to take responsibilty on their contracts.

    [Reply]

    Lake Forest Reply:

    @FKA PakiFro, what do you mean by “phase in”

    [Reply]

    goldielocks Reply:

    @Lake Forest,

    NHLPA’s proposal were like it gradually gets to 50/50 share at 5th year, starting with higher percentage to protect their existing contracts. Bettman countered with this ‘make whole’ concept with 50/50 through all years. But after that statement, Daly said this phese-in approach isn’t entirely ruled out so PA can make it like getting 50/50 at 3rd year or something. Hopefully, they could work out something reasonable in 48 hours.

    goldielocks Reply:

    @FKA PakiFro,

    I just listened to Westy’s interview on NHL radio. He said that their third proposal was literally 50/50 making whole if only owners honor the contracts they signed. At this point, they are $500 million apart. So if they make it like both sides take a step forward by taking $250 million concession each, it would be a done deal but … I don’t know. We’ll see in a couple days.

    [Reply]

    FKA PakiFro Reply:

    @goldielocks,

    I guess thats the thing..the NHLPA IS making concessions just by going to 50/50. What are they getting in return? Shorter contracts, stricter cap controls?

    Jamesonafterawin Reply:
