As many know already, L.A. Live has partnered with master Chef Wolfgang Puck and Kiss front man, Gene Simmons to create Rocktoberfest that will feature several Oktoberfest beers paired with Wolfgang’s California twist on the traditional Oktoberfest menu. Tonight there will also be a Kings twist on things with Lord Stanley’s Cup making an appearance from 6-8 pm. Come down and say hi to me, Bob Miller and Daryl Evans, get a picture with the Cup. Who knows, maybe Bob will school Mr. Simmons on how to play the guitar. Should be fun. See you there!

If 16 teams are losing money then shouldnt the league lower the salary cap??? If costs are going up (rent, insurance, gas, hotels, etc…)shouldnt the league be watching their budget. I own a business and my evenues are up but my PROFITS…are down. The players need to stop with proposals of their own and negoiate with 50 50 being the ending point.Get the league to give in on the other issues but you will/should not get more then 50%.

@Neil, No one put a gun to the owners heads and forced them to spend more than they take in. Those teams chose to do so. When people mention the teams who continually lose more money than the rest of the league each year they continually mention the same 4 teams. Phoenix, New Jersey, New York Islanders, amd Colombus. Lets examine each of those teams problems individually.
Phoenix plays in a city in which the fans just don’t care about hockey, it’s as simple as that. And whose choice was it to allow them to move to Phoenix? Their owner Gary Bettman. He also allowed them to spend 55 million on his teams payroll when he knew they were losing money and that he could’ve saved the league 6 million dollars had he had a payroll closer to the cap floor. But it’s the players fault.
New Jersey got a terrible financial deal on their new arena. They also chose to spend way more than they had to, cough, Kovulchuk, cough. Their payroll last season was nearly 62 million dollars. If they had spent in their means they could’ve saved 13 million dollars last season. But it’s the players fault.
The Islanders play in a horrible arena, and for a horrible owner who has made so many bad decisions it’s a wonder how he made enough money in his other ventures to be able to afford a hockey team. It’s was Wang’s decision to give Alexei Yashin a 10 year contract. It was also his decision to give Rick DePeietro a 15 year contract. Both of those contratcs have put his team in a situation where he can’t spend enough money to make them field a winning hockey team. Thus the fans don’t bother supporting the team. Plus they’re still paying off both contracts for atleast another 3 years. But it’s the players fault.
Lastly we have the Colombus Blue Jackets. Who decided it was a good idea to put a team there in the first place? Gary Bettman. They are also a team who decided to spend well beyond their means. They spent 61 million on player salaries last season. Mabye had they spent less money they wouldn’t have lost money. But it’s the players fault.
Mabye these owners should remember the first rule of business: dont’t spend more than you take in.

@CB14, One thing nobody is mentioning is the NHL owners do not own NHL teams to make money. There are other businesses that surely are better opportunities, but its a status symbol these guys don’t need 4+ cars, but I bet they do. I bet they pay property taxes of $30,000+ on a vacation home they only go to 5 days out of the year. Professional sports owners like the status it gives them around their peers. Even if the team loses money its a needed tax writeoff, and they usually make up the difference when they sell the team. But, why would a NHL teams value go up every year, its a status symbol of how rich you are that you can afford it. Think a Lamborgini that doesn’t wear down, and is guaranteed to always start, not breakdown, and is $200,000 more than any your friends own.

I’m bummed I won’t be able to make it to that, but you guys have enough fun for me. Sounds like an awesome time.
This has been my take on things pretty much since the NHL offer on Tues. Finally close enough to the final CBA that real negotiations can start. But it seems that instead of taking what the NHL offered and saying we don’t like these 10 or what ever # of items lets find middle ground or satisfactory corrections on these matters make the final CBA. The NHLPA just shuffles somethings together and says this is what we want with little compromise from earlier proposals? I suppose if there was any good it appeared that they backed off 57% for the future take and are now looking at a 50/50 split even if it takes 5 or so years or so to get there. I have always felt the NHL dictated terms in the last lockout, but failed to design a sustainable CBA for that they are wrong, but the NHLPA can’t just demand things stay broken either. They must negotiate and fix this hopefully good enough that another lockout doesn’t happen in another 6 or so years.

Katz, the Oilers owner, has been threatening to move the team to Seattle. The NHL will never allow that. Edmonton is one of the most profitable hockey markets in the league.
Toronto area will probably get a second team before Quebec does.
I am betting on the Yotes moving from AZ and that the league will own them until they do.

@KingCharles of SaltLake, The odds of having at the season are slim to now. Thanks in part of the so called united stand the silly players have against any rollbacks on their salaries. Shouldn’t they realized that this so called expected revenue they are bickering over with the owners might not exist at all if they continue to sandbag the NHL fans by refusing to agree on a contract with the owners. The last time I checked the average working person in the US or Canada was not making $1 million. Shame on the players for not putting things into perspective and acting like spoiled rich men who do not want to lose more than 10% of the million they make. I expect many fans to walk away from hockey if the NHL cancels the 2012-2013 season.

I wonder what the AHL players think about this NHL lockout. I think a lot of them do not understand it like me. If the NHLPA does not want a 5 year CBA with rollbacks then can they just agree with a short CBA deal to see how this 2012-2013 season goes and then reassume CBA negotiations during the offseason for a longer CBA.

Sure it’s not the best deal, but like you said, these guy are loaded. Let them work for 15.00 an hour and see how far that takes them. Anyone of us “middle class” would jump at the chance to play a game for a living. But the thing that bugs me is that neither side cares about us. the very people who buys the tickets to the game. What a shame!!!

@King Charles of Salt Lake, I agree that the NHL and NHLPA do not care about the fans. The issue that we have is that two stubborn individuals such as Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr are leading the CBA negotiations. I am sure that when the NFL and NBA CBA agreements were made they did not have people like Bettman and Fehr leading them.
Does anyone think if the NHLPA fails to come to its senses by this coming Thursday that the NHL will use the threat of replacement players to at least have some hockey this season?

And nobody here can predict what these napoleonic and arrogant attorneys led sides will do regarding negotiations. We can hope, guess and point fingers until hell freezes over.
But I’ll be dammed if I have to watch the raising of the first LA Kings Championship with replacements players. I PREDICT I would not be the only one booing throughout the entire ceremony or chanting ‘We want the real players!!!’ to the top of my lungs.

@Cesar, Fehr ruined baseball for me personally. The Yankees being able to pay their players several times more than nearly ever other team has made a mockery of the sport in my eyes. As much as I hate the Yankees I feel sorry for their fans. They can never again really feel they have won anything legitimately with the odds stacked so absurdly in their favor.
I used to love baseball. Now it’s a joke. I sure hope the same thing doesn’t happen to hockey.

@variable, I thought, I was done making suggestions, but here we go.
CBA proposal no rollbacks thru the CBA term. 1st year teams are allowed to go over a soft cap of 60 mil/yr to 70 mil. If they do 50% of that amount over the soft cap will be paid to players next yr by %, and not count against the next year cap(This just allows owners to pay up to 5 mil over the soft cap next year. 2nd year the 50/50 max cap will be a hard one and teams will need to balance their rosters acordingly, but with a provision that the max cap is at least 65 mil/yr if not the same provisions as the 1st year, but hard cap is 65 mil/yr. Third Year same as the 2nd but hard max cap at 62.5 mil/yr. Yes teams will have to adjust their rosters. Also starting immediately and for the remainder of the CBA the min cap will be adjusted to be a 70% of the Max cap instead of a fixed range of 16 mil/yr.

You can have all the $5 and under beers if you drink them at home after the game or at the near bar/restaurants before or after the game. Do not buy food or drink at the arena. Keep that portion of YOUR Hockey Related Revenue in your wallet, not the NHL or NHLPA.
The arena workers are not on commission, so there is no skin off their back, either.
